Indigenous ceremony space at the Edmonton Community Health Hub 06/14/2024

Kôhkominaw wîkihk, or grandmother’s lodge, is the new ceremony space located at the Edmonton Community Health Hub North.

Carola Cunningham, an Elder who helped guide the process from initial design to reality shares what the space means to her and the community and the importance of having a space like this within a healthcare facility.

“Even though it was built intentionally to do ceremony, I encourage everyone to use it as a space to bring people together and have conversations. I hope it can help break down barriers” says Cunningham. “We want staff and the wider community to feel like it’s a space that they can seek comfort and guidance.”

Taking a look at the forecast this weekend, looks like it's not quite time to pack away those shovels just yet ❄️

Shoveling snow can be a strenuous activity, especially for those with heart conditions. February is Heart Month and we're sharing tips to protect your heart while shoveling those final snowfalls before spring:

❄️Pace yourself and take breaks as needed.

❄️Warm up for a few minutes before starting.

❄️Dress appropriately and wear proper footwear.

❄️Use good technique: Bend your knees and lift with your legs, not your back. Keep the shovel close to your body and avoid twisting motions to prevent injury.

❄️Listen to your body: Stop if you feel unwell.
