Walking or running stairs can be a great way to sneak in some exercise.

To make it more challenging, suggests taking steps two at a time and/or adding in upper body exercises, like push-ups, when you get to the top.

She's putting the Edmonton stairwells on her get to do list this summer.

Here's a list of stairs in the area for you to try: Royal Glenora Stairs, Promenade Boulevard, Wolf Willow, Patricia Ravine Trail , Grandview Stairs, Hermitage Park.

Have you ever tweaked something, and thought, "I'll just wait and see if it goes away?"

Without intervention, those things end up changing your movement patterns and can lead to longer down time.

Try conservatively managing it on your own with gentle stretching, light strengthening, heat or ice where appropriate. If it sticks around, or you aren't sure where to start, book an assessment.

The sooner you address something, the sooner you can do all the things you love.

*FUN FACT* In many professional sports, a measurable decrease in performance, even in the absence of pain, can trigger that an athlete has some prehabilitative work to do.

Just by adding this ONE thing to your programs, you can increase performance and prevent injury at the same time.

Move sideways!

This is true for the inactive person with back or knee pain, right up to professional athletes, and can be as simple as side stepping, pushing into the ground while in side plank, or you can up the intensity by adding resistance.

The key is knowing what level to start at for your body and incorpating it consistently.

Thinking of getting out on the road for a run now that the sidewalks are clearing?

While it can be tempting to just lace up and go, your body will thank you for taking a few moments to prepare it.

Try 1-3 rounds of these:
•Roll out the tension in your feet.
•Use a towel to strengthen your foot and ankle (pull, moving it sideways, etc).
•Calf Raises
•Toe Taps
•Clamshells
•Glute bridges
•Resisted (or not) knee drives.

BONUS--add some upper and lower body twists to your warm-up for an even better prep.

Want to limit your injury potential?

📣 Don't skip your warm-up and cool down.

📣 Cross train. Your activity or sport is not enough--those movements need support.

📣 Incorporate mobility and core work consistently.

📣 Take rest days!! If your body does not get a chance to recover and rebuild, your performance will decrease.

Ask your Athletic Therapist for more tips, or get an assessment to see where your imbalances are in your body.

❓Why might you need a custom knee brace? OA, or osteoarthritis braces can help relieve pain. If you've got an instability, a brace can help you through the recovery process and in returning to activities with some protection.

Every year when late Nov-December hits, our phones light up like a Christmas tree, and while we appreciate it, we cannot always accomodate the number of sessions people want to use up around the holidays.

Here's what to do⤵
▶Check your benefits balances early.
▶Speak with your AT and see what is appropriate for your treatment plan.
▶Schedule in advance to avoid a waitlist.

Do you have trouble getting going in the morning? Are you stiff or sore?

Try starting your day reaching for a water before the coffee, and incorporating movement into your morning routine. We find it sets us up for a more focused, pain free day 🙌

Test out some or all of these:
▶Cat/Cow
▶Child's Pose or Hip Rocking
▶Book Opening
▶Foam rolling and/or stretching tight areas (ie. hip flexors, neck, chest, glutes).
..and then the ☕!

In clinic we kept seeing similar stories of people wanting to get active, but every time you got going you got hurt or re-injured from beginning too far above your fitness level & health history.

There needed to be something for you that wasn't full on therapy and wasn't a crazy fitness plan off the internet. It needed to start from scratch, build a solid base, AND progress all of your fitness goals, so we made it!
kucher started it off years ago with her in office prehabilitation classes, and eventually built it into an online program to be able to help more people gain confidence in their abilities and work on a pain free life.

After years of testing it out, she's finally ready to share it with even more people as she steps back from treating in office.

Masks will be mandatory as of Friday, September 3rd for all indoor spaces in Edmonton. As a reminder, we continue to highly reccomend them during your sessions with us leading up to this change.

Effective September 3, 2021, wearing a mask or face covering will be mandatory in all indoor public places in Edmonton including publicly accessible areas of businesses, retail shops and City facilities.

Masks continue to be mandatory on transit, transit centres and LRT stations, and in taxis and vehicles for hire.

This bylaw will be in place until December 31 or until active cases drop below 100 per 100,000 for 10 straight days.

"Do I need to be injured to come see you?" It's one of the most commonly asked questions we get when people find Athletic Therapy in their benefit coverage.

If you're thinking in strict terms of a new or chronic glaring injury, then the answer is no.

AT's are specialists in movement, and returning people to active lifestyles using hands on treatment techniques and exercise, so if you're feeling stiff or sore, or could have any limitations keeping your performance from being its best, you can also see us for that.

Some people work with us to PREVENT injury, to maintain independent lives through strength training as they age, and even for maintenance to live painfree similarly to having a regular massage.

We LOVE receiving messages about your sessions! Check out these two texts from recent new clients.

When it comes to insurance coverage, most insurance companies do cover Athletic Therapy services, but it is up to your employer/HR to know to request it (or make it a choice).

▶If you're an employer, ask your benefits coordinator about adding Athletic Therapy to your plans. If your an employee, we've been told many companies will keep track of service provider requests for future planning, so it doesn't hurt to ask.
