Indigenous Veterans Day on November 8 commemorates the service of First Nations, Inuit and Métis members of the Canadian armed forces, including Parks Canada Hometown Hero Thomas Hammond.
Born in Scarsdale, Nova Scotia, Hammond was among more than 200 Mi’kmaq from Atlantic Canada to volunteer for the Great War.
He joined the 26th “New Brunswick” Battalion of the Canadian Expeditionary Force as a Private in 1915, but tragically was killed during the Somme Offensive the following year at the age of 29.
One of many First Nations enlistees who volunteered to serve despite facing discrimination in the military and hardships upon their return to Canada, today we remember Private Hammond’s bravery and sacrifice to safeguard peace and freedom.
Halifax Citadel National Historic Site commemorates the Hometown Heroes of Nova Scotia, recognizing individuals who made unique contributions to the war effort like Thomas Hammond.

Today on we take a look back at some of our most memorable moments from the past…
Today we are fondly remembering our 2014/15 Youth Ambassadors, George and Lindsay and their farewell message from March of 2015.
“Together, we have made it through the highs and lows of this Canadian dream job. We've learned that Canada is a massive country but a small world. We've learned that every young Canadian deserves to experience Canada beyond city limits, beyond popular culture, beyond classrooms and beyond screens. We've learned that sometimes our natural world is not easy to access, but that this is changing.”
