Syndicated Psychological is TWO! 🥳

After previously working as a school psychologist and a teacher, I opened my practice (in the middle of the pandemic), with the goal of making psychological services more accessible to our community. Over the last two years I’ve been fortunate enough to work with so many incredible families, move to a beautiful new space, and expand my knowledge and skills. I am so grateful for all of you, and for the opportunity to do what I love each day!

Two things about me on my second anniversary:
1. If I ask you to go for a walk, a few hours later you may find yourself halfway up a mountain.
2. I’ve never met a piece of carrot cake I didn’t like. Except that one time in Costa Rica…but that’s another story!

Already thinking about back to school?

As always, is a drop off location for the Tools For School program. This program provides local children and youth with much needed school supplies. Unfortunately, there is a high number of requests which may not be able to be filled. If you’re able, please consider picking up a couple extra items when you are out. Contact me for more details.

Smart, scattered, and struggling? This book focuses on developing executive functioning skills- the core brain-based abilities needed to maintain focus, get organized and control impulses. This book includes step-by-step strategies for teens. There are also versions available for kids and adults!

Equal is everyone getting the same thing. Fair is everyone getting what they need to be successful.

Let’s talk about graphic novels!

Graphic novels can be a great way to get your reluctant readers reading. Short, snappy dialogue interspersed with longer text and captivating images helps engage readers, and holds their attention.

Graphic novel benefits:
▪️developing and reinforcing skills such as inferencing, decoding, analyzing and comprehension
▪️demonstrates punctuation and grammar
▪️explains figurative language
▪️readers learn about emotions and context clues through the images
▪️follow plots and character development
▪️understand cause and effect
▪️learn about perspective

Many of these books come in sets, so when you find one your child likes, there are lots of options available! There are graphic novels for all reading levels, ages and interests.

Reading Challenges- Maya, 2nd Grade

What is Executive Functioning?

▫️ Executive Functioning is a set of mental skills that include working memory, flexible thinking, time management, problem solving and self-control.
▫️We use these skills every day to learn, work, and manage daily life.
▫️Many children and youth are lacking skills in these areas, particularly those with ADHD.

Luna the lamb is on her way in for a long day’s work!

Luna is coming in to the barn to work in our Critter Connections program!! She’ll spend her morning with a group of preschool aged children while they read stories, groom her, and participate in other activities to enhance literacy.

It’s Literacy Week! I’m reading to a very special Grade 3 class via Zoom today. Reading to kids is one of my favourite things to do! My daughter picked out these two books for today’s read. What’s your favourite book to read aloud?

Meditation and Kids…

Meditation provides children with the opportunity to unplug and slow down. This break results in improved functioning and focus. Other benefits of meditation also include:

▫️learning effective coping tools
▫️changes to the brain (neuroplasticity)
▫️awareness of breath
▫️building resilience
▫️increased focus
▫️improved sleep

There are many great apps to help children learn and practice these skills. Wellbeyond is one of our favourite apps to use before bedtime.
