Congratulations to Dr. Benjamin DeVries (GEG) and Dr. Travis Steffens (SOAN) for receiving federal JELF funding!
Both researchers plan to use drone technology to better monitor and understand factors impacting forests and the animals that live within them.
DeVries will be equipping his drones with hyperspectral and LiDAR sensors to monitor the impact of the Hemlock Wooly Adelgid, an invasive pest recently discovered to be in Canada, on hemlock stands.
Steffensโ research will model lemur habitat in Madagascar in order to better understand how the environment influences the occurrence and diversity of the animal group.

Congratulations to Dr. Kate Parizeau of GEG for being named an inaugural University Teaching Leadership Fellow (ULTF)!
Parizeau will be a UTLF in Alternative Assessments and Student Mental Health, looking at the potential for alternative assessments through the lens of student mental wellness.
There will be two foci to this project: assessing the potential for expanded institutional approaches to alternative assessment (i.e. credit/no credit grading systems that can be opted into by students), and developing capacity and assessments of instructor-led alternative assessment practices (e.g., ungrading, collaborative assessment, specifications grading).

Excited to share that GEG Doctoral candidate Chloe Alexander recently published a report on food loss and waste monitoring and measurement in Canada.
Chloe examined the various ways food loss and waste is measured throughout the agri-food system in Canada. She makes some recommendations in the report for how to improve the uptake of monitoring and measurement practices by business and government as well as the quality of data at various scales.

Happy to announce that sessional instructor Laura Brown (also former GEG grad) and former grad Dr. Brenda Murphy along with Bryson Gunson and Dr. Annette Chretien, are the recipients of the Emergency Management Exemplary Service Award โ Resilient Communities.
The Emergency Management Exemplary Service Award is a prestigious recognition for exceptional service and achievement across Canada to prevent, prepare for, respond to and recover from emergencies and disasters. As a partnership between provincial, territorial and federal governments, the award recognizes recipients who have achieved excellence in their respective fields.
Laura and Brenda and co. engaged in sessions with First Nations communities across Canada to register their experience and needs during flooding events. Their final report was presented to Indigenous Services Canada and the Assembly of First Nations (AFN), it outlined and identified the needs of these communities to flood risk reduction and access to flood insurance. This report enables the Government of Canadaโs forward planning to protect First Nations residential properties from future floods.
A ceremony is planned for December 15, 2022, in Ottawa, where FPT Ministers will present the award medallion to recipients.
Prof Emeritus Robin Davidson-Arnott and former grad Jeff Ollerhead went to Prince Edward Island after hurricane Fiona to check the state of the dunes that protect the shoreline. Robin and Jeff have studied these dunes for the past 20 years. Listen to their CBC interview on what they found:
