Here are some highlights from last weeks meeting.
*Jamie Naylor, a FARE PhD student, has won the Graduate Student Paper Competition. The paper, titled 'Strategic Under-Reporting of Arsenic by Community Water Systems,' was co-authored with his advisor Brady Deaton. Congratulations to both Jamie and Brady!
* Congratulations, Alfons, on winning the Publication of Enduring Quality award for your paper titled 'Economics of structural change in agriculture' by Goddard, Ellen, Alfons Weersink, Kevin Chen, and Calum G. Turvey, published in the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics (1993): 475-489.
* Aaron Lorenz, former MSc student, has been awarded Honourable Mention for the Outstanding Master’s Thesis Award for his thesis titled 'On Rice and Weddings: An Investigation of the Impacts of Indonesia’s Raskin Program on the Incidence of Child Marriage.'

The 2nd year MSc students all gave excellent presentations and demonstrated the quality of their thesis research. There was a wide range of topics covered by the students, all dealing with important real-world issues.
Caitlin Kroetsch (MSc FARE) won the 1st place prize, Mariam Abu-El-Magd (MSc FARE) won the 2nd place prize and Nicholas Bannon (MSc FARE) won the 3rd place prize!

Two FARE MSc graduates, Stewart Skinner, FARE MSc 2010, and Jessica Kelly, FARE MSc 2014, of Imani Farms in Listowel are Ontario’s 2023 Outstanding Young Farmers. The two faced off against friends and mentors Jennifer and Derek VanDieten, of Van Dieten Dairy Farms in Seaforth in the tightest judging result of the competition. A single point separated the winners. The two farming couples shared their presentation with a packed house at Thatcher Farm’s Barn Swallow Fields events space on August 17.

At this year’s Annual Meeting of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society, which was held jointly with the Western Agricultural Economics Association in Whistler, B.C., several FARE faculty and students received awards in recognition of their outstanding work.
Brady Deaton was named CAES Fellow. See the separate post from July 31.
Yong Liu (Ph.D. graduate, 2021) was one of two co-winners of the CAES Outstanding Ph.D. Dissertation Award for his thesis on Estimating Conditional Crop Yield Densities and Rating Crop Insurance Contracts.”
José Nuño‐Ledesma received the Honourable Mention for the Outstanding Journal Article Award for his 2022 article “A portion cap rule with two products: An experimental evaluation” in the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics (CJAE).
Alan Ker received the Enduring Quality Award, which is awarded to books, articles within books, and journal articles that have had a significant impact on agricultural, food and resource economics with a publish date of at least 10 years ago.
Benjamin Scott (Environmental Economics and Policy graduate, 2023) received the Book Prize Award, which recognizes and encourages the achievement of an undergraduate student in their study and application of agricultural, food or resource economics.
To round it all off, Yu Na Lee was elected into the presidential cycle as President-elect of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society for the academic years 2023-24 to 2025-26. Shortly after the CAES meeting, Yu Na received an Outstanding Reviewer Award from the American Journal of Agricultural Economics (AJAE) at the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association in Washington, D.C.

Dr. Brady James Deaton, Jr., a professor in the University of Guelph’s Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics, has been named a Fellow of the Canadian Agricultural Economics Society (CAES). The award is the highest honour given by the CAES to its members. The criteria for this esteemed honour encompass substantial contributions to the field of agricultural economics and a profound impact on the institutions within the realm of Canadian agricultural economics.
Professor Deaton is the McCain Family Chair in Food Security in the Department of Food, Agricultural and Resource Economics at the University of Guelph. Brady has served as President of the CAES as well as Editor of the Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics. He also served as the President of the Institutional and Behavioural Economics Section of the Agricultural and Applied Economics Association.
Brady has published in several outlets, including the American Journal of Agricultural Economics, Canadian Journal of Agricultural Economics, Food Policy, Land Economics, and Ecological Economics.
Professor Deaton provides leadership to an award-winning teaching, research, and outreach program. He received the Teaching Excellence Award from the University of Guelph’s Central Student Association and the Distinguished Extension Award from Ontario’s Agricultural College. The Canadian Agricultural Economics Society honoured him and his co-authors with the 2021 Outstanding Journal Article Award for their research on food insecurity in First Nations.
Professor Deaton earned his Ph.D. degree in Agricultural Economics from Michigan State University. Dr. Deaton’s research focuses on food security and land tenure.

The U of G FARE Lab is seeking participants this summer to assess their productivity with exposure to green space for 1-1.5 hours. Participants may have to walk for 20-minutes around the University of Guelph campus or walk west down Stone Road (i.e. in the direction of Stone Road Mall) along the sidewalk and will have to answer basic math questions (walking routes are wheelchair friendly and accessible). You will receive $15-$40 cash depending on your performance outcome.
