Happy International Women’s Day ! 💐

To celebrate the IWD2024 with you, Teycro compiled short bio’s of four historically influential women in STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) fields who changed the world.

This year’s content is about women in , because we are a company that attributes its success to the advancement of digital technology and media, which would not exist without the advancement of STEM fields.

🧮 Ada Lovelace (English 🇬🇧): the world’s first computer programmer, thanks to her work on Charles Babbage’s early mechanical general-purpose computer, the Analytical Engine. Her notes on the engine included what is recognized as the first algorithm intended to be processed by a machine, making her contributions foundational to the field of .

🔬 Marie Skłodowska-Curie (Polish/French 🇵🇱 | 🇫🇷): a truly pioneering physicist and chemist. Born in Poland in 1867 and later naturalized in France, Curie’s groundbreaking research on radioactivity led to the discovery of two elements, polonium and radium. Despite the challenges she faced as a woman in her field, her dedication to science paved the way for future generations of women in science.

🧬 Carrie Derick (Canadian 🇨🇦): born in 1862, was the first female professor in Canada. She significantly contributed to the fields of botany and genetics; she created a course in Evolution and Genetics, which became the first of its kind in Canada, and later the [Human] Genetics dep’t at McGill University. She was as well a women’s rights activist; she publicly supported birth control, a contentious issue which was illegal in Canada from 1892 to 1969.

📐 Maryam Mirzakhani (Iranian 🇮🇷): born in Tehran, Iran, in 1977, was an outstanding mathematician who made profound contributions to the fields of geometry and dynamical systems. In 2014, she became the first woman (and the first Iranian) to be awarded the prestigious Fields Medal, often referred to as the Nobel Prize of Mathematics, for her work on the symmetry of curved surfaces.

Lunar New Year's Day : Korean Dragons

Did you know? Korean myths say dragons aren't just born dragons. Before they become dragons, they are more or less huge mythical water snakes called Imoogi 이무기, in training to become dragons. Do you know how long such painstaking periods of training last?

1,000 years. Oof.

Legends say an ethereal bid (Yeoeuiju 여의주 in Korean) must be granted to an Imoogi for them to become a dragon. Upon their first appearance in front of a human, if they say "Is that a dragon?", they are granted the Yeoeuiju bid, become a dragon and can successfully ascend to the heaven. If the first human encountered says "Is that a snake?" they FAIL immediately, losing the opportunity to become a dragon, and they must be in practice as an Imoogi for 1,000 years again to get another chance.

Needless to say, there is a lot of Buddhist influence in these myths, and Buddhism focuses a lot on self-discipline and enlightenment within oneself. Interestingly, according to Korean mythology dragons were once huge water snakes who were in training - and only through self-discipline, extreme training and then acknowledgement by a human, they finally become dragons who are respected and admired by all creatures of the Earth.

𝗢𝘂𝗿 𝘁𝗵𝗼𝘂𝗴𝗵𝘁𝘀:
No pain, no gain; ancient-time Koreans seem to know that quite clearly. Good things in life do not just come to you at no cost. They cost you time, resources (i.e. money) and other important things in life at times. Obviously, even in modern times many people and companies, are "in training" and in pursuit of success, and waiting for that moment their qualifications, efforts and offerings come in limelight, beloved by the important ones who will respect and admire them (and of course, 'buy' their offerings).

But like the myth of Imoogi, how others perceive you is a different story. Branding is a challenge, and being in training for 1,000 years does not guarantee others see you as an accomplished, ready Imoogi who is to become a dragon... In our times, many also do not get the well-deserved spotlights, and their qualifications, efforts and offerings are often understated, undervalued AND undersold. The context often goes missing before it hits the listener/beholder. Hurt, they go back in painstaking training/education/R&D etc. for months, years... and then re-launch. Repeat. Only some make it happen...
