Happy Self Care Day! Now that you know about the 7 Pillars of Self Care we hope you have found new ways to take care of yourself, and have been reminded of important boundaries to your well-being.

It’s a lot to think about, and a lot of responsibility so today, we hope that you take the time to indulge in some of that more “commercial” Self Care. Enjoy!

07/23/2024

Looking for effective treatment? Perfect!

ANSR is a provider of evidence-based treatments for mental health conditions. Our mission is to enable access to new, researched and effective treatments that can help alleviate symptoms of depression, anxiety and other significant mental health conditions.

07/22/2024

The 7th and final Pillar of Self Care is rational use of products and services. Self-care products and services are the ‘tools’ of self‐care, supporting health awareness and healthy practices, and may include the use of prescription medicines, wellness services and health services. Rational and responsible use of these products or services involves several factors. Firstly, only products and services of safety, quality, and efficacy should be used to self-manage health and wellness. Secondly, when treating an illness, products and services are best used for self-recognizable conditions, and for chronic or recurrent conditions following initial medical diagnosis. Stay safe, and don’t overdo it!

Happy Friday! Self Care Pillar number 6 is maintaining good hygiene. Handwashing is probably the most important hygiene practice that individuals can engage in. It is one of the simplest, yet most effective, health behaviours. Handwashing is a do-it-yourself “vaccine”; regular handwashing reduces the incidence of diarrheal and respiratory illnesses and reduces the development of bacterial resistance by reducing bacterial spread. Handwashing promotions have been shown to reduce diarrheal illness by 31%, reduce diarrheal illness in immunocompromised individuals by 58%, and reduce respiratory infections by 21% (CDC, 2013). All that said…we think this is a good opportunity to indulge in an extra song in the shower, or take a good soak this weekend!

Wishing a very Happy Pride to everyone in Halifax and anywhere else where we celebrate that !

07/17/2024

Self Care Pillar number 5 is risk avoidance. In terms of health, this refers to the avoidance or reduction of behaviors that directly increase the risk of disease or death. So yes, sometimes Self Care can look like a day at the spa, but sometimes it means butting-out.

07/15/2024

Here at ANSR we pride ourselves on always prioritizing evidence-based treatment. While we are keeping our fingers on the pulse of emerging treatment options like Neuronavigation, the long-term efficacy and cost-effectiveness of this approach compared to traditional rTMS, remain under-researched. We want our patients to feel reassured that we are not “experimenting” with their well-being, and consider their safety a top concern. If you have any questions about our approach we’d love to talk with you about it. Feel free to reach out any time.

Self Care Pillar number 4 is health eating. An unhealthy diet is a major risk factor for chronic diseases and generally poorer health. Many international organizations and researchers, including the World Health Organization, have recognized the importance of improving diet in both developed and developing nations. The prevalence of overeating, and consumption of nutrient-poor, calorie-dense foods has led to a global epidemic of obesity: in the last decade the prevalence of obesity has passed that of malnutrition as the primary source of diet-related morbidity. When your physical health is better, your mental health often becomes more manageable.

Self Care Pillar number 3 is one we’re all familiar with, but do we know WHY being physically active is important for our mental health?

Regular moderate-intensity physical activity – such as walking, cycling, or participating in sports – significantly improves health, fitness, and mood.

Adequate levels of physical activity help to control weight and reduce the risk of metabolic illnesses (WHO). Being active can reduce the risk of a host of non-communicable illnesses, such as cardiovascular diseases, diabetes, colon and breast cancer, and dementia.

We’re continuing our exploration of Self Care this week starting with Pillar number 2. There are many different definitions of mental wellbeing, but they generally include areas such as life satisfaction, optimism, self-esteem, mastery, feeling in control, having a purpose in life, and a sense of belonging and support. The World Health Organization defines mental health as a state of wellbeing in which every individual realizes his or her own potential, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and fruitfully, and is able to make a contribution to her or his community. The positive dimension of mental health is stressed in the WHO’s definition of health as contained in its constitution: “Health is a state of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity.”

On July 24th we celebrate Self Care Day. But what does Self Care really mean? It’s not just bubble baths and scented candles. This month, we’ll be exploring the Seven Pillars of Self Care.

Pillar 1 is KNOWLEDGE & HEALTH LITERACY

People with strong health literacy skills enjoy better health and wellbeing, while those with weaker skills tend to engage in riskier behaviors and have poorer health. Good health literacy skills allow an individual to interpret the information they are given about health, to find and use their own sources of health information, and to understand when information is poor or misleading.

At its most basic, health literacy refers to the ability of a patient to understand information given to them by health care professionals. This information can be confusing and complex, and it is not always designed for a non-clinical audience. One of the most important aspects of health literacy is that it allows a patient to interpret information, whether written or verbal, and understand it.

While graduation season is certainly a time for celebration it’s also fraught with uncertainty.

A recent student survey found that nearly eight in 10 (79%) graduating seniors say COVID-19 impacted their workforce preparedness, and 68% cited their mental health as the primary reason for feeling less prepared. While some 93% of students are hopeful about their future, 71% said they are somewhat or very stressed about entering the workforce. A vast majority of students (92%) said employers should offer mental and emotional health benefits, and 36% are prioritizing organizations that do in their job search. Most students (82%) plan to use resources to support their mental health after graduating.

You hear it all the time: “I always feel so much better in the Summer!”

And for a lot of people that’s very true.

The increased sun exposure boosts our vitamin D levels, and can even improve mood, leading to better mental health. Spending time in the sun also helps your body produce more melatonin (sleep hormone) at night, allowing you to sleep better and overall feel better.

But if that’s NOT you, don’t feel like it’s your fault. We’re all individuals who react differently to external stimuli.
