What a beautiful, big harvest day! Folks at .warehouse.market were messaging as we harvested: we need more green onions! We need more basil! The harvest list got longer and the farm team got stronger. More crops kept coming in to the wash-pack room to get—em— washed and packed. Meanwhile, Kara was visiting, and thank goodness she was able to step in and help out 💕. Everything will be available at the Market starting Friday at 9am. Andrew and Olivia, along with Olivia’s dad Russ whipped around the farm preparing beds, and planting crops. Olivia’s mom was taking care of little baby Parker so this could all happen. What a family!

The Market is open Weds to Fri: 9-6 and Sat: 9-4 at 2856 Isleville St in North End Halifax.

Harvests are starting early these days! Kris and Jen, luckily, had bug jackets to fend off the mosquitoes while they harvested fennel. David repaired our poor old platform dolly. 😅 We harvested carrots, tomatoes, eggplants, celery, kale, sweet turnips, lettuce, cilantro, basil, arugula, and more! Our neighbours even brought over raspberries! It is all heading for Halifax and will be available at the Warehouse Market at 2867 Isleville St.

The Market is open Weds to Fri: 9-6, and Sat: 9-4. See you there.

I love posting photos taken by the farm team! From extra big zucchini to harvesting green onions in the rain. Of course frogs and spiders and so many flowers! Don’t worry. We’re not sending frogs and spiders and spined soldier bugs to the Market. We’re keeping them here on the farm. They have lots of work to do right here. We are sending fresh farm veg to the .warehouse.market every Tuesday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday afternoon every week during peak harvest time. That time is now!

Many thanks to the farm team, human and non-human, to the Market team, and to all the customers who make the farm and Market possible 💚💚💚

Such a great time of year and the heat wave is almost over! All the things are here.

I just talked to a dear customer who loves basil, tomatoes, fresh mozzarella cheese, and a little olive oil. This is the time! We’ve got it all. Please enjoy ☺️

Market is open Weds to Fri: 9am to 6pm, and Sat: 9am to 4pm at 2867 Isleville St in North End Halifax.

There are a couple of hours in the early morning that are ok for working, and then it gets pretty hard to handle the heat. The team worked hard to get so much produce harvested 😅on Monday and Tuesday. It is the time of year when we harvest most days. We’ll be bringing in all the best greens, roots, herbs, and the beginning of the fruiting crops (yay!).

Jin gets the award for the hat with the best sun protection coverage.

It will all be available at Warehouse Market at 2867 Isleville St in North End Halifax! Open Weds to Fri: 9am to 6pm and Sat: 9am to 4pm.

We got a lot of rain Thursday afternoon/evening. Around 90mm in a short time. Unfortunately there was some soil movement, mostly from the top of beds and crop hills into the pathways. This can be fixed. We have some work to do replacing a culvert between two ponds. It isn’t big enough for the extreme rain events we’ve been getting lately. We’re very happy about the living pathways in Fox field (pictured). Lots of plant roots in the pathways helps to hold on to soil. What a relief! Living soil is so precious. It is the foundation of the farm. We are trying to do everything possible to keep it healthy and in place.

07/12/2024

Rain report: We got 90 mm yesterday between about 3pm and this morning at 7am. We have not surveyed the fields yet 😬

Photos from Abundant Acres Farm's post 07/12/2024

Luckily we got most of the harvest finished before the rain started 😅

Beets, dill, lettuces, rosemary, salad turnips, epic fennel, all the basils, all the kales, zucchini, cukes, beautiful perfect cilantro, epic green onions, and even little blue bachelor’s button flowers were harvested for Market.

We fit a safety meeting, and some beneficial insect identification into the day. We fit all the delicious produce into the van, and Rachel drove it through the pouring rain to .warehouse.market

The Market is open Weds to Fri: 9-6, and Sat: 9-4 at 2867 Isleville St in North End Halifax.

Yup, it was hot on the farm today! We drank a lot of water and got through a massive harvest. Tomatoes, cukes, zucchini, celery, kales, spinach, salad mixes, fennel, eggplants, radicchio, and all the herbs. Rosemary, basil, Thai basil, purple basil, oregano, cilantro, green onions (very long ones!), dill, chives, sorrel, red veined sorrel, tulsi, and shiso.

I couldn’t believe how much produce Andrew and Rachel packed into the transit.

We will keep harvesting all week and it is all available at Warehouse Market in North End Halifax at 2867 Isleville St. Open Weds to Fri: 9-6, and Sat: 9-4.

George came in to Market today and immediately picked up the kohlrabi. He peels it, slices it into quarter inch pieces, adds olive oil and salt, and throws it on the BBQ. “I love it that way! In fact, that’s what I do with carrots, beets, and lots of other vegetables. Then I add green sauce, which makes everything taste so special.”

Happy Summer!

Joy. The feeling today as we harvested celery, salad greens, cukes, zucchini, kales, broccoli, fennel, radicchio, rosemary, radishes, sweet turnips, and all the culinary herbs. Luckily we have a few comedians on the team to keep people chuckling as they race to get everything harvested, washed, and in the cooler. We even got some bunches of 20 elastics made up in preparation for more harvesting this week. Jin was the fastest at bunching the elastics :)

The best photos are credited to Kristie.

We were thrilled with the rain on Sunday! 32mm 💦 It arrived just in time after we put a pile of transplants into a new field that doesn’t have irrigation set up yet. 😅
On Mondays we focus on tomato and cuke pruning and trellising. Swipe to see before and after. Also, thanks to Kristie, all the bins got washed.

Photos from Abundant Acres Farm's post 06/26/2024

We had a nice, rainy harvest, and sent the first very full load of juicy vegetables to .warehouse.market
In addition to all the greens, we harvested bunches of carrots, celery, beets, and caraflex cabbage. The basil is coming into its own. Don’t forget to check out the sweet tulsi and other fresh herbs.

Thanks to all who messaged with concern for the farm team 💕
It was HOT the past two days. We drank a lot of water and electrolyte drinks, freezies, spent a little extra time in the cold room, or getting irrigated with the crops. Some members of the farm team started working earlier in the morning when it was cooler. We even fit in a farm safety meeting in the shade. I loved the way everyone was looking out for each other. We’re amazed by the new irrigation reel 💦 and also hoping for rain!

We sent a load of produce to .warehouse.market

The first harvest of holy basil, or tulsi went in. It has a beautiful refreshing scent and is recommended as an iced tea for hot days.

They’re at it again! Making bundles of 20 elastics for harvest days while listening to Handel’s Messiah. The harvest team loves this time-saving measure. Thank you Hanna!💕

Photos from Abundant Acres Farm's post 06/18/2024

This week is going to be hot! Eli provided a useful resource on how to avoid heat stress, so everyone has been advised to drink a cup of water every 15 minutes and wear light coloured clothing. The harvest team pulled in a big, beautiful harvest and we’ll continue to harvest all week. The smell and taste of dill especially makes me think of summer. We also have perfect cilantro, great little gem lettuces, romaine, butterheads, and even radicchio! Fennel, broccoli, radish, sweet turnips, all the different kales, arugula, basil, bok choi, chard, kohlrabi, parsley, rosemary, thyme, sage, and spinach are also available!

Life is good ☀️

After lunch, we got a photo of the whole farm team (except Jen B). Underneath the Kentucky Coffee Bean Tree, which has finally leafed out and is providing some much needed shade 🌿

You can get Abundant Acres produce at Warehouse Market, 2867 Isleville St in North End Halifax. ✨Open Weds to Fri: 9am to 6pm, and Sat: 9am to 4pm. ✨

David and his mother, Hanna, are counting bundles of 20 elastics. Having these bundles helps speed up harvest. We don’t count produce harvested, just how many bundles of 20 elastics we use. She counted a few, frowned, and said, “do they have to be exactly 20?” 😂

When Mallorie and I were pruning and trellising tomatoes this morning she said she loved working at Warehouse Market last week. “A few customers asked when the tomatoes would be ready.” Patience! They need some more time. The sun really helps ☀️🍅

Photos from Abundant Acres Farm's post 06/15/2024

Tomatoes are finally all planted in the field tunnels. 😅🍅 I hope you have a sweet sweet growing season tomato friends! We planted, we set up irrigation, we trellised, we mulched. I hope soon we will get into a routine of pruning, trellising, and harvesting every week until October.
Thank you to the farm team for an epic week! It was a real push, and it was hot and sweaty, with biting insects and other frustrations.
This year we are trying a new thing. Mulching the tomatoes and cukes with home-grown young hay. New things are always a little scary. The goal is to improve soil life. We’ll keep you posted.

We’re pleasantly surprised about our plentiful harvest of cilantro and spinach, so we’re offering two specials this week ! Cilantro will be 2 bunches for $5, and some quick to harvest spinach will be $6/lb. While supplies last.

We also harvested plenty of dill, romaine lettuce, arugula, little broccoli, kales, bok choi, salad mix, basil, rosemary, lemon thyme, and more.

It’s all available at Warehouse Market at 2867 Isleville St in North End Halifax. We’re open Weds to Fri 9-6, and Sat 9-4.

This harvest day was so special. Such great people, and the crops are looking and tasting fine! One part of the team is harvesting, another part is washing and packing, and a third group is managing fields so the weeds are dealt with and the crops go in on time. It really felt today like the crops were so ready to be harvested and in their prime. Especially the cilantro and green onions.

Don’t forget our new open hours at Warehouse Market: Weds to Fri: 9-6, and Sat: 9-4. Find us at 2867 Isleville St in North End Halifax.

We are starting to harvest new crops, like dill, chicory, sorrel, black kale, and broccoli. It was very fun to remove netting and row cover and finally see what was growing underneath! We did see a nice crop of radicchio, but it isn’t ready to harvest yet. I hope the deer don’t find it. It is their favourite thing to munch on.

All this green goodness is flowing into the Warehouse Market at 2867 Isleville St in North End Halifax. We are now open Weds to Fri, 9am to 6pm, and Saturday: 9-4.

Symbiosis (Part 2) 06/03/2024

It's been a wild ride! This spring has thrown a few curve balls at us, but here we are, at the beginning of June. The farm team has done their best to get crops in the ground on time, harvest enough for Warehouse Market and Farm Share, and learn all their new roles. We were also very happy to get some rain this week, because it was starting to get dry!...

First harvest, farm share season 2024. It was massive and epic. The wind came up, the rain came down (yay!), the team rallied to the challenge.

We’re lifting up a huge thank you to our farm share members!

Today we pruned and trellised the tomatoes and cucumbers. This will be a regular Monday morning job. Sarah found a ladybird beetle larva and got a photo. This is such a good friend 💕 to have in the greenhouse. It is a very effective predator of aphids.

We had another great big harvest day today. ☀️Rachel also found a great big sweet turnip! She gave it to Kristie to pickle. We sent everything else to Market, including choi rapini and our first basil 🌿 harvest 😊.

Photos from Abundant Acres Farm's post 05/21/2024

Oh what a day! We harvested everything that was ready, including all the juicy greens, radishes, sweet turnips, and so much rapini!

Starting this week, Warehouse Market will be open earlier! ***We’ll be open Weds to Fri: 9am to 6pm*** and Sat: 9am to 4pm. 2867 Isleville St in North End Halifax.

Next week, our Farm Share pick ups will start! Exciting!!

Hello sun and warmth! As the tomatoes, basil, and cukes get settled and growing in the greenhouses, we are shifting to harvest outside! Rachel and Jen B got to lift the protective cover off, and harvest, baby kale, mustard greens, and radishes out in the field. “First outside crops!” are exciting for us, especially when the weather is perfect (hem hem). Meanwhile, Eli, Steph and I headed to the field tunnels to harvest a perfect new crop of spring spinach, enormous salad turnips that are so juicy and sweet, bok choi, baby bok, all salad greens, kale rapini, and cilantro. Don’t worry, we got Winterbore kale, and Swiss chard from the greenhouse. Steph joined me for a stinging nettle harvest that stays with you for the rest of the day, increasing circulation wherever it touches you.

Hats off to the production team who has been working so hard to get the garden beds ready, planted, and weeded before harvest!

Thank you to all the new people who are showing up at Warehouse Market in North End Halifax to enjoy this juicy goodness!💕 Market is open Weds-Fri 11-6, and Sat 9-4 at 2867 Isleville St, next to .46 !

We’re making a tractor switch. From a newer Kubota, to an older John Deere. Why? The older tractor was recommended to us by Sean because as it gets older, it will have fewer computer-related problems, because it doesn’t have high tech components. It’s like an analog tractor. What do others think?🤔
