That’s it for me guys! Thank you Studio_rats for giving me the opportunity to share my work. Keep creating!
-Alice McCall
Here are some figure drawings I have done throughout my time here at Redeemer.
Some are my own sketches, some were drawn from live model sessions in figure drawing class and others are copies: Pierre Prud’hon’s Standing Female N**e and William Blaire Bruce’s Phantom of the Snow which I saw at the AGH.
I love how William Blaire Bruce depicted a scene that has only occurred to a select few. Stories have been told by hikers who found themselves in intense danger of not finding their way back, but ended up coming across a phantom which led them back on track. Cool right?

Hey Studio Ratters!
My name is Alice and I will be taking over the Studio rats page for a couple of days.
I am a second year art student at Redeemer. Currently taking art concepts and art business. Right now I have a focus on acrylic painting, paper mache sculpture, photography and of course drawing.
If someone were to ask me off the top of my head who my favourite artists are my answers would be Francis Bacon, Bruce McCall and Arthur Schilling. What catches my eye more than anything in the art world is considered use of colour and the human figure (distorted or naturalistic).
I look forward to sharing more with you guys!
Peace and Blessings
That’s it for me - thanks so much for following along the last few days :)
To end off this week I wanted to give a little insight into what much of my art making has looked like recently.
Living and working on Georgian Bay has been a huge inspiration this summer. I’ve loved packing up my little watercolour kit and exploring the incredible places around me. I’m very much new to plein air painting but have found it to be an amazing way to fully exist and take in a place. It has been an exercise in letting go of perfectionism and just creating, worrying less about exactly rendering a scene than capturing the feeling of a particular place or moment. It’s been a learning experience for sure, and I hope to keep it a regular part of my practice beyond the summer!
A peek into my anatomy binder🧐
While this began as an assignment back in first year, it has become an ongoing practice as a way to explore new media and techniques. As an art/kin major, this has also been a way to meld both aspects of my studies and find a space where these two subjects that seem so different can connect!
🦴💪🏻✏️
WYMBOLWOOD SKIES: a little oil series inspired by one of my favourite places on earth :) Forever in awe at the majesty of these skies and the greatness of our God.
Psalm 8:3-4 - “When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and the stars, which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him, and the son of man that you care for him?”
✨ARTIST TAKEOVER✨
Hey everyone, it’s Libby! I’m so excited for the opportunity to share a bit of my art with you all. A few things to know about me:
1. I’m a double major in art and kinesiology going into my fourth year at Redeemer (senior show here we come!!)
2. From painting to pottery to printmaking, I love exploring all kinds of different mediums and techniques! A recent favourite is watercolour, and it’s been so much fun to experiment and see growth over the course of the summer
3. I love the outdoors and spend lots of time hiking and just generally being in nature, which is a huge inspiration for my work. (expect to see more on this later in the week:))
Thanks for following along!
Day 5 today is my final day of the studio rats take over! Today I thought I would share some more drawings and some more photography!!! I am glad I got the opportunity to share my art and photography with ya’ll!! Enjoy the rest of your summer!!!
Follow my accounts if you would like:
4th day! Although I find myself grabbing a pencil rather than a paintbrush, I still paint sometimes and love it when I do!! Here are some artworks I have made using either (oil, acrylic or watercolour paints and some of them have ink add to them as well)!! 🎨
Day 3 of my studio rats take over and I thought I would switch it up a bit and share some of my photography!!! 📷 I love taking nature/wildlife photos and most recently I been really enjoying taking portraits!!! Today I’m going to be sharing some of my nature/wildlife photos!!!
Day 2 of taking over the studio rats account! I’m going to start off by showing you some of the portraits I’ve drawn (free handed) over the last little while! I’ve been really practicing realism. The third photo is one of my most recent drawings! I used emotions I was feeling to create my drawings!
Hey Ya’ll my name is Kaitlin and I’m taking over the studio rats page for the next couple of days!! This coming September I will be in my fifth year at Redeemer University! Majoring in Social Sciences and Minoring in Art!!
I have a love for both art and photography!! Which you will see over the next couple of days!!:) 📷🎨
I really love realism, so that’s what I’ve been practicing a lot of recently when it comes to drawing!! :) When I am creating art, I often express my emotions, and moods into my artworks!

Hey guys, Meghan here for the third dayyyy!
Today, I’m posting some of my favorite prints that I’ve made so far :) you might notice that the gold and silver flowers follow a similar pattern. This is intentional on my part, as I love the cohesion of the swirly, circular pattern starting from the outside and going inwards.
Alsoooo, you’ll never guess where I’m posting from today! I’m at my family’s cottage on Mazinaw lake enjoying the sunshine, and planning out the next painting 🖼️
Anyways, talk to you later, and I hope your day is bright and sunny wherever you are ❤️🌼❤️
🤸🏾♀️ A lil bit about me 🤸🏾♀️
Yo! I'm Steph! I attended Redeemer back in 2010-2014. I did a minor in visual arts (and painted an entire still life in a dark closet 🤣). After graduating I couldn't get back to my hometown soon enough. Southern Ontario has its charma, but I'm a small town northern girl to the bone! I grew up surrounded by lakes and trees, and intend to keep it that way!
I got into pottery in 2020 with my friend. We bought a kiln from a mutual friend without knowing how to use it, and as they say, the rest is history! I am fully self taught (thank goodness for YouTube!), which looking back still seems insane to me! But hey, if I can do it, you can, too!
I live in a converted RV all year round.
I love canoe camping and will choose to sleep in a hammock over a tent anyday!
I absolutely love to travel and see the world! A couple years ago I told myself that for every trip I did abroad I had to explore a new corner of Canada. I recently road the VIA Rail from Sioux Lookout to Vancouver and back. I highly recommend.
I recently got into bouldering (friendly reminder that you don't have to be the best at something to love doing it!)
Oh, and I love carrots 🥕
Fun fact: I started my pottery journey back in 2020 when I bought a kiln without having any clue how to use it! There's a lot that goes into every single ceramic peice (more on process will come later!). But one of my favourite parts is the surface designs that reflect my NWO backyard! From canoe camping trips, to early am fishing trips, to the local flora & fauna, I have no shortage of inspiration. I love being able to celebrate my neck of the woods through functional art!
Check out my page for more of my work!
Yo Studio Rats & friends! I'm Steph of and a fellow Redeemer Alum (c. 2014). I'll be taking over the account this week, so stay tuned for some pottery content and some Northwestern Ontario inspo!

Eternity in our Hearts, 12x12"
A final post for my Studio Rats takeover, which I hope you enjoyed. This painting features my favorite view on Ahmic Lake, which I tend to paint often in all its different variations.
This specific scene just felt like creation was releasing a sigh, or a song of soft and beautiful praise to its Maker. I think the painting captured that feeling very well 🧡
This piece is inspired by my favorite Bible passage, which I would like to share with you: Ecclesiastes 3:11.
"He has made everything beautiful in its time. Also, he has put eternity into man's heart, yet so that he cannot find out what God has done from the beginning to the end."
Another recent development from Sim's Art Studio is that I have begun to produce prints!
These limited edition giclee prints are made with archival ink on canvas, and are available stretched onto a gallery depth frame or unstretched. The prints are a high quality representation of the original artwork, thanks to the fabulous work of .
This was another way to diversify product price points, while still offering customers a high quality and beautiful product. I did a lot of searching to find a print quality I was actually happy with, so it was very nice to discover this Hamilton based print shop.

Let me tell you a bit about my art making progress 🧑🎨
For large paintings, I work at my "wall easel", which was actually inspired by and built to imitate the moving walls in 's Art Room. Absolutely love this set up!
I start all my paintings off with a Diarylide Yellow base layer, then sketch the image on with white charcoal, and outline that drawing with a fluid Quinacridone Red. I start by painting the horizon line, then any positive shapes such as trees, buildings, etc., then the ground, and finally the sky, working in my color cube style ✨
You will notice the paint on my easel... very early on I discovered that it was quicker and saved on water and paper towels to just wipe the paint from my brushes on the easel. I rarely wash my brush off fully while painting.
The back of my wall easel is a white display wall where finished artwork can hang. I was very happy with this finished painting, Sunrise over Ahmic Lake, which is 20x60" 🌅
Artists at Redeemer/Alumni, were you also inspired by the moving "wall easels" in the Art Room? Do you prefer to paint on a flat wall or a traditional leaning easel? I'm curious 🙂

Hi, it’s Sim, the artist who creates landscapes of colour and cubes! I wanted to share with you a bit more about my goals and inspiration as a landscape painter ✨
Through my paintings I desire to capture shape, light, colour, movement, and ultimately, the feeling of a landscape. It’s something I believe can’t be captured in a photograph, something imperfect yet full of life. As a creator who is inspired by the Creator, I love the complexities of natural landscapes. There is so much detail and energy in creation, of which my cube style is only a reflection. Yet it brings to life some of the wonder I feel when experiencing and admiring landscapes, so I know I am on the right track!
The painting I am holding is called "Sapphire Symphony". It features my favorite view on Ahmic Lake; a view I have painted so many times and am still inspired by 💙
I look forward to sharing more about my artwork and life as an artist this week! You can find more of my work and follow my art journey at 🌿

Day 5: Future Plans and Next Steps
As my week of sharing comes to an end, I’m excited to announce my future plans! I’m working on building a website that will serve as a marketplace and portfolio for my scientific illustration. This will allow me to take on commissions and freelance projects, bringing the beauty of science to more people.
I’ll also be sharing upcoming class projects from my media & illustrative design courses and preparing for a full gallery exhibition. Stay tuned for more updates and new artworks!

Day 4: Exploring Diverse Artistic Techniques
Delving into mycological artistry with a mushroom ink recipe – transforming fungi into a scientific palette. Uncover the secrets of nature’s inkwell and witness the alchemy of mycology in every stroke. 🍄🖋️
This piece marries objects with what they leave behind through rusted metal, a table runner, and inks. The rust created imprints of the metals on the cloth, usually used for family dining.
I made this painting for my Painting Final at uni. We had to create a display box with symbolic items and then paint it. I have cropped this painting to only include my favourite item for this post, the mushrooms! If you’d like to see the full painting you will have to check it out on my page 😉.
Each item in my painting, from the skull representing death and creativity to the rusty gears symbolizing a broken machine, alludes to different aspects of education. The duality of the piece, with the right side bleaker and the left more hopeful, reflects the contrast between decay and growth. The mushrooms symbolize transformation, and the watch connects these themes over time.
Day 3: Nature-Inspired Illustrations
Today’s feature: the fascinating life cycle of the true morel mushroom, found right in my backyard! 🍄 These morels thrive in the mossy areas along our dying cedar bushes. While I’m not a fan of eating them, my dad swears they’re delicious with eggs! 🥚 ”
Exploring the delicate beauty of birds nest fungi and vibrant daffodils through my illustrations. Nature offers endless inspiration! 🌼🍄 ”
This water snake was a highlight from my summer trip to Tobermory. Capturing its sleek form and patterns was a rewarding challenge. 🐍 #
Watch me bring this robin to life digitally! 🖥️ Robins are a common sight, but their vibrant colors and lively presence never fail to inspire. ”
These drawings of the endangered piping plovers at hold a special place in my heart. After seeing my work, my coworkers and I decided to create a staff hoodie featuring this design to raise awareness and support conservation efforts. 🏞️💛 ”
Most of these nature drawings are part of a project I started with some friends from university. We document things we encounter and are curious about all summer, then meet up once school begins to share our discoveries. Sharing my art and experiences with you all has been incredible. Stay tuned for more of my artistic journey where nature and science intersect. 🌿✨ ”
Day 2: Exploring Medical Illustrations
First up, a hyperrealistic depiction of the anatomy of a hand, created digitally over 18 hours using Procreate. 🖥️ This piece meticulously showcases the bones, tendons, and muscles, reflecting the complexity and beauty of the human body. "
This traditional piece, inspired by Grey's Anatomy, was crafted with pastel chalks and graphite. To evoke the history of scientific illustration, I aged the paper using coffee grounds collected from the campus Tim Hortons. ☕ If you look closely at the bottom left corner, you'll notice a faint outline of another drawing, a nod to the old artists who reused their paper.
Here’s a digital piece I completed in four hours, illustrating the muscles on the left side of a male face. The precision and detail are crucial in conveying the intricate structure and function of facial muscles.
This charcoal drawing is designed to resemble an x-ray image of a human skull. The use of charcoal helps achieve the contrasting textures and depths, emphasizing the skeletal structure. 🖤
