Aikido Yoshinkai Canada
Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art and form of self-defense that uses locks, holds, throws, and the opponent's own movements.
Aikido is a traditional Japanese martial art characterized by sweeping circular movements and techniques which require minimum strength. It is a highly developed discipline which integrates the mind and body in the development of self-confidence, peace of mind and physical skill. AYC's Chief Instructor, Kimeda Sensei (9th dan), has been teaching in Canada for 45 years. Classes are held at the Canadian Japanese Cultural Centre of Hamilton.
Thank you to Kimeda Sensei for honouring me with the rank of Yondan in Yoshinkan Aikido (4th degree black belt). Proud to represent the Aikido Yoshinkai Canada collective! Shout-out to all in Hamilton and Oakville for helping me along this journey (and to Chris Johnston for the photo!). We're always accepting new students! :) www.aikido.ca OSU!

Aikido Yoshinkai Canada would like to announce and congratulate two of its most senior instructors on their recent promotions. Hans DeGroot and Elie Zakaria were both promoted last month to the rank of Godan, fifth degree black belt, by the Yoshinkan Hombu Dojo. Both DeGroot Sensei and Zakaria Sensei have been training and teaching with AYC for over 20 years and their contributions cannot be overstated. DeGroot Sensei is currently the Chief Instructor of Aikido Yoshinkai Ottawa and Zakaria Sensei is a Senior Instructor at Aikido Shindokan in Oakville. Congratulations to both of you!
No classes this Friday night - children or adults. Happy Easter.

*** SPECIAL ANNOUNCEMENT ***
It is with a great sense of pride that Aikido Yoshinkai Canada would like to announce the promotion of the three most senior current students of Kimeda Sensei: Paul Gagliano, Chris Johnston, and Michael Kimeda.
This spring, upon Kimeda Sensei’s recommendation, the High Rank Grading Committee of the Yoshinkan Hombu Dojo promoted both Chris Johnston and Michael Kimeda to 7th dan. As many of you are aware, Chris Johnston Sensei is the Chief Instructor of AYC’s Oakville Dojo (Aikido Shindokan) and Michael Kimeda Sensei is the Senior Instructor at AYC’s headquarters in Hamilton.
As an additional honour, the Grading Committee has also awarded the SHIHAN title to all three teachers: Paul Gagliano Sensei (who has held the rank of 7th dan since 2016), Chris Johnston Sensei and Michael Kimeda Sensei. The Shihan title is an honourific one used in Japanese martial arts to designate an individual as a “master teacher.” It means that their technique and character are indicative of the art and is usually reserved for only the most experienced and high-ranking practitioners.
On Wednesday, July 21, Kimeda Sensei made a special presentation at the Shindokan dojo in which he awarded the certificates prepared by the Hombu dojo in Japan. All of the students of Aikido Yoshinkai Canada take pride in this achievement and extend a warm congratulations to this well-deserved honour.

We will be doing both jodo and aikido - contact is allowed!
Quick summary of the rules:
1. wear a mask at all times.
2. temperature check and contact tracing before class
3. no change rooms available
4. bring water
5. restroom for emergency use only
Great news!
Aikido Shindokan will be open for regular classes again beginning with Ontario’s move into Step 3 of it’s re-openning plan. This is scheduled to occur on Friday, July 16, 2021.
As we move to resume regular training, please keep in mind that we will adhere to all public health guidelines. These include the wearing of face masks at all times within the dojo and the maintenance of social distancing. We must also remain within the 50% capacity limits.
In addition, I would like to ask that, for the safety of all of our members, you only return to the dojo once you have had at least one shot of an approved COVID-19 vaccine. All of the teachers at the dojo have completed their second shots and are fully vaccinated.
We look forward to seeing you all in person!
