Annual Holiday Open House is right around the corner! Welcoming and her stunning silver jewellery as one of my guest artists for the event. ‘Clare Pearson has studied Design at Sheridan College, Fibres and Sculpture at Concordia University and Jewellery at George Brown College. Her sculptural installations have been exhibited at various Ontario galleries (including The Art Gallery of Hamilton, McMaster Museum of Art and Hamilton Artists Inc.) and her work has found homes with private collectors worldwide. She references her background in design and three-dimensional art in creating the delicate elements of her jewellery. Drawn to the world of functionality, she has turned her focus to precious metals, creating small scale sculptures for the body. Clare works from her Dundas, Ontario studio for private collectors and galleries.’

Two weeks to go! Join us for the annual Holiday Open House Nov 17 6-9pm and Nov 18/19 10-5pm. I’m excited to be welcoming back well loved - her textiles are a favourite here and a beautiful addition to any home. ‘Caroline Forde is a Canadian textile artist living and working in Toronto, Ontario. Her love for vintage fabrics and natural colours inspires her surface design process. In the studio, she creates hand-printed and dyed fabrics using a variety of traditional techniques. Through research and material exploration, Caroline aims to incorporate sustainability and craftsmanship into sensible, sought-after objects.’ 🌟

Annual Holiday Pop-Up is right around the corner! Join us Nov 17 6-9pm and Nov 18/19 10-5pm to support local artists and shop handmade. I’m thrilled to be hosting guest artist and her fantastic work as part of the show. Work with personality! I want one of each!! 🌟 ‘Clay is my voice. I have found my identity and creativity by working with this material.
The story of clay is that of a once soft and malleable material, made hard through firing. I create work that tells this story; a focus on quickly made, deeply textured, and gestural forms. I intentionally leave pieces of trimmings, rough edges, and the evidence of construction. I want to preserve the memory of the once soft squishy clay, by leaving behind traces of my hand.

All of my work is fired in a wood burning kiln that is stoked with a community of people. The preparation and length of this process allows me to build relationships with other wood fire potters. Learning from others' experiences, techniques, and skills, makes each firing unique and memorable. Woodfiring expands the potential surfaces that I can achieve with clay, and allows me to give up some control to the process. It requires patience, and is labour intensive.’

Gorgeous vessels by now available in our online shop, and in the showroom Fri/Sat/Sun 11-4. ‘
My current series of clay works examines the relationships between the natural land and ancient manmade structures, in the past abandoned, left to be transformed through time by the force of the elements and generations of human contact and interpretation. The relationship and interaction of landscape, seascape, weather and archaeological sites of Neolithic chambers, dwellings and monuments found in the Orkney Islands have been the predominant influence in my most recent body of work. What has become increasingly intriguing for me is the historical narrative encapsulated within and on these ancient monuments.’

Day two! The show continues today 11-4. April Gates was my first ever pottery teacher so I’m so thrilled to be showcasing her work at the event this year. ❄️ Her approach to surface treatment is magical and so thoughtful. I love every single one of her pieces. A big thank you to the many folks who came out to support artists and small business yesterday - we would not be here if it weren’t for you! —- April Gates is a full time ceramic artist & educator hailing from the pine covered hills of the Haliburton Highlands. 20 years ago, a love for image making married a concern for function, and Blackbird Pottery was born!

April’s passion lies in the surface of pots where imagery and mark making are explored and layered for a graphic and lyrical approach to clay. Rural roots, landscape, and memory permeate her work where intimate everyday objects become conduits for personal reflection and narrative.

Technical exploration keeps this soul searching, feeding a passion for expression and inquiry.

Our Story

In the centre of a small village called Jerseyville, you'll find our commercial gallery and lifestyle shop in our hamlet’s original general store from the 1800s.
After the store was left empty for over 20 years, we opened our shop doors in 2015 as a modern general store that specialized in quality handmade objects. We started with our house made pottery and a small collection of locally produced gifts and stationary. We have since expanded to carry work by over 60 Canadian artists, from coast to coast. Along with our regular collection of thoughtfully made goods, we hold seasonal exhibitions that highlight themed collections, new artists, featured works and our country's top makers.

We are passionate for carefully curating beautiful and useful objects to be used and cherished in your home.
We believe in creating a warm and welcoming retail experience, where you can explore and support the works of emerging and established artists, small business owners, shopkeepers, and makers across Canada.

Attached to our shop is our pottery studio and workshop.
Our finely crafted furniture and tableware are made in house.
