Word Of the Week: Lupus
an autoimmune disease that can damage any part of the body, often causing inflammation, pain, and tissue damage. In the US alone, it is estimated that approximately 1.5 million people have lupus, with the majority of them being women.
In North America, the prevalence of lupus varies by race and ethnicity, with African American, Hispanic, and Native American populations having a higher risk of developing the disease. Lupus can also have a significant impact on the quality of life for those affected, as it can cause chronic pain, fatigue, and other symptoms that can interfere with daily activities.
Despite ongoing research, there is currently no cure for lupus, but treatments such as immunosuppressive drugs and anti-inflammatory medications can help manage symptoms and prevent complications.

Ageism refers to the prejudice or discrimination against individuals or groups based on their age, often leading to negative attitudes, stereotypes, and behaviors towards older adults. Ageism can manifest in different forms, such as exclusion from job opportunities, healthcare disparities, and social marginalization.
In North America, ageism is a prevalent issue that affects a large portion of the population, especially older adults. According to a report by the National Council on Aging, more than 80% of older adults have experienced ageism in some form, and it can have significant consequences on their physical and mental health.
Ageism can also impact healthcare delivery, with older adults being less likely to receive certain medical treatments or being subject to inappropriate care. This can have serious implications on their quality of life and overall well-being.
Here are some tips to combat ageism:
Challenge your own biases: Acknowledge and challenge your own assumptions about aging and older people.
Speak out against ageism: Speak out against ageist attitudes and behaviors when you encounter them in your personal life or in the media.
Educate yourself: Learn more about the aging process and the experiences of older adults.

Word of the Week: Celiac
Celiac disease is a genetic autoimmune disorder that affects the digestive system. It is triggered by the consumption of gluten, a protein found in wheat, barley, and rye. When a person with celiac disease eats gluten, it triggers an immune response that damages the lining of the small intestine. This damage can lead to malabsorption of nutrients and a range of symptoms, including abdominal pain, bloating, diarrhea, and weight loss. The only treatment for celiac disease is a strict gluten-free diet.
Some facts about the Celiac disease:
- Celiac disease affects an estimated 1 in 100 people in North America.
- In North America, an estimated 83% of people with celiac disease are undiagnosed or misdiagnosed.
- The average time it takes for a person with celiac disease to receive a proper diagnosis is 6-10 years. (So you need to keep a close eye)
- The only treatment for celiac disease is a strict gluten-free diet, which can be challenging to maintain but is essential for preventing long-term complications.
- The prevalence of celiac disease is higher among Caucasians and people of European descent.
Health Reminder: Are you taking breaks and stretching throughout the day? Don't let sitting for long periods of time take a toll on your body. Take a few minutes to stretch and move around to help prevent injuries, improve circulation, and reduce stress. Your body will thank you!

The disease was first discovered in 1909 by Carlos Ribeiro Justiniano Chagas, a Brazilian physician and researcher, and is named after him. An estimated 6-7 million people worldwide are infected with Trypanosoma cruzi, the parasite responsible for causing Chagas disease.
