We are deeply disturbed by the rise in anti-Asian hate crimes and violence across North America since COVID-19, including eight people who were killed in the mass shooting in Georgia last week.

Anti-Asian racism is on the rise in Canada, with the highest incidents reported in Vancouver and Toronto.

We acknowledge the pain, fear, stress, anger and anguish currently being experienced by Pan-Asian and Asian-identifying communities across the globe and right here in

As a community, we have a responsibility to understand how to recognize hate crimes as they happen in real time, what to do if we witness it, how to prevent COVID-19 stigma and Anti-Asian racism. We have attached a few resources from to start. Our words and actions (or inactions) matter.

Asian is not a virus. Racism is.

Oh, Canadaaaaa.... let’s do better. 💪😤💯

Repost Anti-Asian racism isn’t just happening in the United States — it is very much alive in Canada, too.

In fact, Canada has a higher number of reported hate crimes per capita than the United States, with anti-Asian hate crimes in Vancouver rising by 717% in just one year.

While there is more reporting of anti-Asian racism lately, it isn’t something new or novel. Canada has a long history of xenophobia and “Yellow Peril” was manifested in various ways, from the Chinese Head Tax in 1885 to the Chinese Exclusion Act in 1923. In 2003, during the SARS epidemic, Asian communities in Canada faced racism at many levels; according to the Ontario government’s post-SARS commission, Chinese workers were getting terminated from their jobs and Chinese tenants were unlawfully kicked out by landlords.

Swipe to learn more about Canada’s anti-Asian racism problem, along with actionable steps you can take to . Resources for reporting anti-Asian hate crimes, bystander intervention training and alternatives to calling the police are also included. If you know of any Canadian-based grassroots organizations, please tag them below.

In todays world, where we are entertained by ads/ shows and social media almost constantly, we need to ask ourselves: what our actions are teaching people?

What are we accepting and what we are moving towards?

It is not an option to sit idly by, we need to be the change we want to see, not only on our yoga mats but also in our world at large.

EVERYBODY VS. RACISM!
We stand with our Asian family against the senseless attacks on their community especially their elderly. Racism and hate are pandemics that we all must fight to eradicate! It starts with listening to communities of color, planning and organizing to support, speaking out about the problems, and actively working on the solutions. We can’t do this alone.
It’s gonna take EVERYBODY.

Posted • Lunar New Year begins on February 12 this year! Why does it matter that we call it Lunar New Year and not just Chinese New Year?

Because many communities in Asia and in the Asian diaspora around the world celebrate this significant holiday! By calling it Chinese New Year, multiple groups who celebrate it too are excluded. Already, the Asian community experiences so much erasure and over-generalization. Let's not perpetuate that. Language matters and impact matters.

Last week, I posted this same content in my stories, and heard from an overwhelming number of you. Many of you asked if I could make this into a shareable post because it resonated. So many stories were shared, such as having to explain repeatedly to friends that it's not just Chinese New Year, when having an East/Southeast Asian face means society assumes you're Chinese, and a general lack of awareness. (You can see the original story in my Festivals Story Highlights.)

So, when can you call it Chinese New Year? Think: who is your audience? Call it Chinese New Year (though it sounds a little redundant) to those who identify as Chinese. Call it Tết to those who are Vietnamese. And so forth... Or call it Lunar New Year, if you are just not sure!

Being Asian is not a monolith. Do not over-simplify or over-generalize our identity. In the past several weeks, I've seen Lunar New Year book posts shared with books with just any Asian character. Not all Asians celebrate Lunar New Year, and not all books with Asian characters or Asian food is a Lunar New Year book. And YES, we need A LOT more cultural representation in books about LNY.

Another note: the Chinese pronunciation in my slides is Mandarin. There are more than 200 Chinese dialects, and pronunciation differs depending on the dialect. Also, I may not have not captured all communities who celebrate, so please drop a note if I missed any nuances.

Lunar New Year usually falls on the second new moon after the winter solstice, and occurs sometime between mid-January to mid-February. It is a time of amazing food, family togetherness, and newness. If you celebrate - Happy New Year to yo

About

Sandra Van Dong-DeLaRonde discovered yoga nearly a decade ago, practicing at the gym and at home, but she truly fell in love with it when it helped her rehabilitate from a bad ankle injury. After pursuing traditional therapies, she turned her attention fully to yoga as she learned that it not only helped with flexibility, but also with strengthening and balance. The further she delved into her practice, she soon discovered that yoga and meditation was not only good for her physical strength, but also her emotional and mental strength. For her it became a daily practice and lifestyle. She acquired her 200 Hour Registered Yoga Teacher training in Baja California, Mexico, where she was trained in Asana, Pranayama, Meditation, Chanting, Anatomy and Physiology, Yogic Philosophy, Ethics and Lifestyle.

Sandra’s approach to yoga is fun and nurturing and she loves inspiring others on their quest to improve wellness. She fully understands the need for balance in life, body and breath, and promotes self-love as a way of healing from the inside-out.

Sandra would describe herself as “not a typical yogi,” neither in looks nor in physical form (you won’t see her in a headstand, or a complex, twisted posture on her Instagram), but she defines herself as, friendly, open-minded and approachable. She describes her own journey with yoga and health as a constant pursuit, something that she, herself, practices at every day, and hopes to share what she has learned with others. She truly feels that all of life’s experiences are teachings, and all those she meets along the way are her teachers.

Sandra is also a Reiki Practitioner, which she expresses as being a guide for positive energy to support healing (physical and emotional), recovery, deep relaxation and self-love.
