Providing young women a performance platform is something we take great honour in. I’ve seen first hand the discrepancy in female sports. The men’s team would be lifting barbells and the womens teams would get bosu balls. Not here. Everyone gets the best.

[EDUCATION] HIERARCHY OF RECOVERY
Sleep: We have all heard the sleep is important, but how important is it and how much do we need. In athletes, sleep can be argued to be the most important element to recovery. Studies have shown up to 10 hours of sleep is required for strength/power athletes.
Hydration: Water maintains blood volume, regulates body temperature and is involved in muscle contractions. According to Sports Cardiology BC, A loss of sweat equal to 2% of body weight causes a noticeable decrease of physical and mental performance. Losses of 5% or more of body weight during physical activities may decrease the capacity for work by roughly 30%. The needs of water greatly depend on the amount of exercise the athlete is involved in. Water is your friend, have a water bottle and drink it through-out the day.
Protein Intake: The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics, Dietitians of Canada and the American College of Sports Medicine recommend 1.2 to 2.0 grams of protein per kilogram of body weight per day for athletes, depending on training. Because they are building muscle, power athletes require a higher level of protein consumption than endurance athletes.
Macro/Caloric Intake: Your body requires carbs, proteins and fats to operate. As power athletes, carbs act as your primary fuel source, proteins act as your building and repairing nutrient and fats support hormonal functions and energy delivery. If you are under feeding in one of these categories you are leaving performance on the table. If you are looking for more personalized information on this we suggest getting in touch with a nutritionist who can work with your specific needs. FUEL has some of the best.
Micro-Nutrient Intake: These are your vitamins and minerals. In short, eat your veggies. These have powerful impacts through-out the body in maintaining good health and supporting performance. Eat lots of different fruits and vegetables throughout the day.
Manual Therapy: This includes things like stretching, mobility, physical therapy protocols and things of this nature. Good stretching practices are important (4-6 days a week) but do not replace the work of a professional rehab accessment.
We are back and have finalized schedules for our summer training programs. Foundations, PowerSport and elite development are now slated. To register, or for more details, please head over to fuellethbridge.com and click the athletic development tab.
A big congratulations goes out to Jacob Sargent for being selected to the U19 Canadian Junior National Volleyball Team. The team will report to camp on July 19th in Vancouver and is set to have its first international play in Anaheim July 28 – August 5.
Jacob will be the second volleyball player from our program to represent Canada at the international stage, after Colm Guyn was selected a few years ago.
We are very proud of all the athletes that pursue their athletic careers through our Athlete Project, and these accomplishments attest to the platform in which these hard working young men and women come to utilize each week.
If you have had the opportunity to meet Jacob, you know he is one the most genuinely kind and driven workers in the room. He can be found helping out the athletes around him and making everyone in the room better. Our program is made better every time he comes into the gym. It has been such an honour to support Jacob through the past years and we look forward to cheering him on at the world stage!
If you see Jacob around the gym please make sure to stop and meet him for yourself. He is a wonderful young man and has a bright future no matter where he decides to dedicate his efforts.
Jacob made the following remarks:
“Ever since I have joined Fuel I knew it was the environment that I needed to be in to succeed, athletes of all ages encouraging each other’s to be the best they can. Every day I walk in the gym, I am excited to get started and better myself and the people around me. This attitude comes from the coach’s and the amazing training environment that is at fuel. The improvements that I have seen in my physical, on court, and personal abilities are insane. Thanks to all the coaches and people who have made my time here amazing!”
It has been a tough year for kids and youth athletics. Throughout all the turmoil of the past 15 months, we are very happy to have been able to provide an outlet for the athletic development of these hard working young men and women.
