Rough & Tumble Play Association of Canada
To create a world where children and youth can engage in healthy and safe rough and tumble play
Roughhousing is a wonderful way to bond both physically and mentally, even with strangers. We absolutely love this picture from our recent community event! Participants arrived as strangers and left as friends, all through the joy of play and roughhousing.
Let's promote more play and remember, before asking kids to stop roughhousing, take a moment to observe. If they're having fun and staying safe, let them play. While it might seem uncomfortable, it's essential for kids to express themselves and build connections with others through this kind of play.

We're feeling very fortunate to have connected with the author of Big Body Play (NAEYC, 2011) and Essential Touch (NAEYC, 2006) and prominent advocate of Big Body Play (of which RTP is a key element), Frances Carlson!
Frances shared this wondering illustration on how embracing physical, active play not only boosts children's development but also how parental attitudes towards this kind of play significantly impact their children's experiences and growth.
Key Insight: Sometimes, parents need to step out of their comfort zones to help their children thrive.

π Hello, parents and caregivers! As the May Long weekend approaches, we're here to remind you of the importance of fostering free play during this time of relaxation and fun.
Here are some tips to ignite their imagination and foster creativity:
1. Create a Safe Space: Set up an area in your home or backyard where kids can freely explore and play without worrying about making a mess.
2. Limit Screen Time: Encourage unplugged play by setting aside designated times for screen-free activities.
3. Provide Open-Ended Toys: Offer toys and materials that can be used in multiple ways, allowing children to use their imagination to create and invent.
4. Follow Their Lead: Let your kids take the lead in playtime. Follow their interests and allow them to explore at their own pace.
5. Get Outside: Take advantage of outdoor spaces for unstructured play. Nature provides endless opportunities for exploration and discovery.
6. Embrace Messiness: Don't be afraid of a little mess! Messy play, like painting or playing with sand, can be incredibly stimulating for children's senses.
7. Be Present: Engage with your kids during playtime by asking open-ended questions and showing genuine interest in their creations.
Remember, free play is essential for children's development and well-being. Let's encourage our kids to play freely and have fun!

π Hey there, incredible community! Today, let's dive into the wonderful world of rough & tumble play - a vital part of childhood development!
π¦π§ What is rough & tumble play, you ask? It's all about energetic, physical interactions that kids naturally engage in, like wrestling, chasing, and tumbling around! π€ΈββοΈ It's not just fun; it's a crucial way for kids to learn boundaries, build social skills, and boost their physical literacy. π§ πͺ

2. **Pillow Fights**: Safe and exciting, perfect for indoor fun on rainy days!
3. **Obstacle Courses**: Create challenges to conquer together, fostering teamwork and creativity!
And now, drumroll please π₯... why we're head over heels for Jiu Jitsu as the ultimate form of rough and tumble play! π₯π₯
π **Jiu Jitsu rocks because it's more than just a martial art** - it's a holistic experience that addresses countless social, emotional, and physical needs for kids and its close-contact nature is a superpower for social and emotional growth! π
π€ **Close Contact, Big Benefits**: In Jiu Jitsu, kids learn to navigate personal space and boundaries in a safe, supportive environment. This close interaction fosters empathy, builds trust, and strengthens friendships on and off the mat! π
π **Empathy in Action**: When practicing techniques with partners, kids tune into each other's feelings and needs, fostering a deep sense of empathy and respect. Understanding how their actions affect others is a priceless life lesson! π
π₯ **Confidence Booster**: By engaging in close-contact drills and sparring, kids learn to trust their instincts and communicate assertively. This confidence spills over into everyday interactions, empowering them to navigate social challenges with ease! πͺ
So, let's celebrate the beauty of close contact in Jiu Jitsu - it's not just about grappling; it's about growing together, one powerful connection at a time! π¬ Drop a π€ if you agree!
So, let's embrace the joy of rough & tumble play, with Jiu Jitsu leading the way to happy, healthy kids! π Ready to roll? Drop a π₯ in the comments if you're onboard! Let's empower our little champions together! π«
π Exciting News for Parents, Educators, and Child Advocates! π
As the Rough and Tumble Play Association of Canada, we're thrilled to share an invaluable resource that addresses the pressing concerns facing today's youth: "The Anxious Generation" by renowned author Johnathan Haidt. In this thought-provoking book, Haidt delves deep into the challenges surrounding anxiety among young people in our digital age, offering actionable insights and strategies for promoting mental well-being.
At the heart of our mission is the promotion of holistic child development, and "The Anxious Generation" aligns perfectly with our values. One key theme explored in the book is the importance of fostering non-screen based play in children's livesβa concept we've championed for years. In an era dominated by screens and technology, it's crucial to remind parents, educators, and caregivers of the immense value of unstructured, imaginative play.
Rough and tumble play, in particular, holds a special place in our hearts. It's not just about physical activityβit's about building resilience, fostering social skills, and promoting emotional well-being. By encouraging children to engage in playful interactions with peers, we empower them to navigate life's challenges with confidence and grace.
"The Anxious Generation" serves as a powerful reminder of the critical role that organizations like ours play in advocating for the well-being of our children. Through our programs, initiatives, and advocacy efforts, we strive to create environments that prioritize creativity, curiosity, and connectionβessential ingredients for nurturing resilient, emotionally balanced young people.
Have you read "The Anxious Generation"? What are your thoughts on promoting non-screen based play in children's lives? We'd love to hear your insights and experiences in the comments below!

π Unlocking the Benefits of Rough and Tumble Play: Insights from the Canadian Paediatric Society π
In the dynamic world of childhood development, one activity stands out for its profound impact on physical, social, and emotional well-being: rough and tumble play. Recent insights from the Canadian Paediatric Association shed light on the importance of this often misunderstood form of play, unveiling a wealth of research-backed benefits that underscore its significance in nurturing healthy development among children and youth.
πͺ Physical Development: Contrary to common misconceptions, rough and tumble play plays a pivotal role in fostering physical strength, coordination, and motor skills. By encouraging children to move, explore, and interact with their environment, this dynamic form of play contributes to the development of robust bodies capable of navigating the challenges of daily life.
π€ Social Skills: Beyond its physical benefits, rough and tumble play serves as a powerful catalyst for social development. Through playful interactions with peers, children learn valuable lessons in communication, cooperation, and conflict resolution. Navigating the ebbs and flows of rough and tumble play teaches children how to negotiate boundaries, respect others' perspectives, and collaborate effectivelyβa skill set that lays the foundation for healthy relationships in adulthood.
π Emotional Resilience: In today's fast-paced world, cultivating emotional resilience is more important than ever. Rough and tumble play provides a safe space for children to explore their emotions, express themselves freely, and learn to regulate their feelings in a supportive environment. Embracing the spontaneity and unpredictability of rough and tumble play helps children develop resilience in the face of adversity, enabling them to bounce back from setbacks and navigate life's challenges with confidence and optimism.
As we navigate the complexities of raising resilient, well-rounded children in the 21st century, let us not overlook the profound benefits of rough and tumble play. Backed by recent findings from the Canadian Paediatric Association, it's clear that this dynamic form of play holds the key to unlocking a world of physical, social, and emotional growth for children and youth. By embracing the inherent joy and vitality of rough and tumble play, we empower the next generation to thrive in a world brimming with possibility and promise. π
Feel free to like, comment, and share to spread awareness of the importance of rough and tumble play in nurturing healthy development among children and youth! Let's empower the next generation to thrive. πͺπ±
