What is Your Shoulder Pain Trying to Tell You? | AMITA Health Blog 06/24/2022

There's many different types of shoulder pain. Every one tells a different story.

What is Your Shoulder Pain Trying to Tell You? | AMITA Health Blog Shoulder pain is one of the most common injuries afflicting Americans. But is your shoulder trying to warn you of a more serious condition?

If you have shoulder pain, here is a stretch you can do at home to help ease the pain:

1) Stand in an open doorway. Raise each arm up to the side, bent at 90-degree angles with palms forward. Rest your palms on the door frame.

2) Slowly step forward with one foot. Feel the stretch in your shoulders and chest. Stand upright and don’t lean forward.

3) Hold for 30 seconds. Step back and relax.

4) Repeat 3 times, or as instructed.

If you have shoulder pain, here are a few things you might be doing that caused it:

Number one is incorrect sleeping position. Side sleeping with your arm underneath the pillow, although comfortable, is a major cause of shoulder pain. Sleeping on your back is how most beds are designed, and if you lay differently you can cause pain.

Rotator cuff tearing is another issue that can cause shoulder pain. These are usually noted by a dull ache in your shoulders that worsens at night, and are just simply caused by older age, or in people with jobs that involve repeated overhead motion.

Lastly, just like your back, poor posture can cause sore shoulder. Office or desk work with your shoulders rolled forwards can be a cause of chronic shoulder pain.

11 Signs Your Upper Back Pain Is Serious Trouble Slouch much? “Upper back pain is most commonly from poor posture,” says Irene Tien, MD, emergency medicine physician with the Rowe Telemedicine Network. What causes upper back pain? How to fix it? There's a number of things that can cause upper back pain, and unfortunately they are very common with most people's present day lifestyles.

The number one cause is poor posture, commonly associated with office work. The best fix is to fix your posture, but people have trouble doing that. A good, high quality chair can also help immensely.

Another cause is commonly called the "weekend warrior" lifestyle. You spend all week doing a sedentary job, and then on weekends you are overusing your muscles that haven't been worked all week.

Obviously you can't change jobs just to fix upper back issues, but you can make sure you're using your muscles throughout the week. It doesn't have to be high intensity (in fact it shouldn't be) but just light to moderate usage of your muscles during the week can help make sure you don't shock them on the weekend, causing pain.
