Save the date for Downtown Mission’s Inaugural Tree Lighting & Block Party on November 21st!
You’re invited to enjoy an evening first of its kind with live music from Mission’s legend, Kenny Hess, performing his Christmas Show, a cozy beer garden featuring and warm food from downtown restaurants. All the while, we are lighting up a huge tree to celebrate the start of the holiday season and to celebrate You, Mission’s amazing community!
This event is purely run by volunteers who love where they live and want to celebrate the gracious spirit of their community and friends.

Our Story
Sue’s Copy Place opened in July 1996. I had worked in the printing industry since 1989 and had learned how manage all the front end duties but I was an employee and was not involved in any decision making. I knew what needed to be done to improve the businesses but my input was not asked for. I worked for two offset printing companies which ended up going out of business and decided to take the plunge and start my own business. I had learned graphic design and accounting from the printing companies I worked for but did not know how to run a press. I realized I could run a copier so I decided to open a copy shop. I borrowed $2,000 dollars from my parents, found a paper company that would give me 30 days as well as a copier company that would do the same. My husband lent me $1,250. to buy an old industrial paper cutter. I bought a used computer, printer & desk as well as graphics supplies. When I paid my first & last month’s rent I was pretty well broke but optimistic that I could make a go of it. I used the contacts I had from the now defunct offset printing company to build a customer base. I decided from the beginning that I would always put my customers first & that I would give them the best jobs I could with the quickest turn around time possible.
In the beginning I used a light table (which a friend made for me for $50.) to layout jobs. I couldn’t afford a graphics program at first so everything was done by hand and waxed to complete artwork. I produced padded forms, black image business cards & made copies of forms for people. Times were very lean for the first few years but in 2001 a guy who rented out copiers approached me to see if I wanted a colour copier. He charged me .35 per colour copy which was expensive but better than not having a colour copier. We expanded our customer base with the Canon colour copier and could provide more services than ever before.
We decided to offer cerlox binding as many of our customers needed proposals bound. As usual we bought one second hand. It had a personality of its own to say the least but at least we could offer another service to our customers. I can remember getting an order for 500 collective agreements of about 100 pages. You could hand punch 15 sheets at a time. Needless to say, it was very hard and we worked 12 hours a day for a week to finish it, but it was worth it.
