When you are purchasing a home for the first time, there are so many moving pieces to keep track of. When you are applying for a mortgage, you may be required to get Mortgage Insurance – but what is it, exactly? Is it the same as Home Insurance?
Simply put, no, mortgage insurance and home insurance are not the same; they serve two very different purposes. Here are some differences:
MORTGAGE INSURANCE
➡️ protects the lender in case you default on your mortgage.
➡️ insures you for the dollar amount of your mortgage.
➡️ pays off the remaining balance if you were to pass away or become seriously ill and unable to pay your mortgage.
➡️ premium payments are included in your regular mortgage payments.
➡️ usually administered by the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation.
➡️ Side note: life insurance is often a better alternative to mortgage insurance if you have the option
HOME INSURANCE
➡️ protects YOU financially as the homeowner for replacement and repairs in covered losses.
➡️ depending on your policy, claims covered may include personal liability, physical damage for claims such as fire and vandalism, contents within the home, and additional living expenses.
➡️ you are in control of how much coverage you have.
➡️ is a separate premium that you pay to an insurance company.
➡️ most banks and mortgage lenders require you to have home insurance .
Purchasing mortgage insurance when you buy your home does not negate the need for home insurance. When you are in the market for a new home, contact us for a free, no-obligation home insurance quote! Our brokers are always here to help you find the best coverage that suits your lifestyle and needs.

Are you ready for spring cleaning? 🌱 🧹
Spring is quickly approaching, and you might be getting the knack to start cleaning out the junk drawer or closet and purge some items you’re no longer using. Getting rid of clutter has so many benefits that can relieve stress and make your life more organized. This type of task can require a bit more mental preparation, so follow these tips to get started on decluttering your home.
🧹 Set a timeline and goals. Decide which rooms or areas you want to tackle and prioritize which space comes first. Set completion dates for each phase and make sure they are realistic timelines. Plan out your time for spaces that will take longer than a few hours
🧹 Create a sorting system. Gather three boxes or bins and label them as ‘Keep’, ‘Get Rid Of’, and ‘Put In Storage’. Clear out all items and sort them into these categories. Keep items that you use in daily life and store them neatly. Get rid of items you no longer use and decide to donate, upcycle, or throw away. Put seasonal or sentimental items neatly in storage.
🧹 Purge your clutter! Consider donating your used items that are still in good condition. Check to see if items can be recycled. Organize a garage sale or sell the items on a Facebook resale group. Throw away anything that cannot be reused or recycled. Shred any documents that might have sensitive personal identifiable information on it.
While you take the time to declutter and organize your home, consider connecting with a BIG insurance broker about getting your insurance organized too. At BIG, we have insurance options for your home, car, pets, life and more! Contact us today at the link in our bio to get a free quote.

What’s one of your most valuable assets? Your ability to earn a living is worth far more than a home or car with the average earnings in Canada over a 30-year career around $2.5 million. Your income represents your ability to provide for your family and maintain your preferred lifestyle. Statistics show that 1 in 3 people will experience a disability for 90 days or more before the age of 65. Have you ever considered what might happen financially if you were no longer able to work due to serious injury, illness or disability?
There are many places you may find some financial relief, but it’s important to honestly evaluate whether you could maintain your current lifestyle as well as additional medical costs with what’s available to you. Many options such as using up your RRSPs or savings or racking up consumer debt to stay afloat is never an ideal option. Even government and workplace options have stipulations and limits.
So, to be prepared to get through the financial crisis of losing consistent income while you recover from an injury or adjust to a disability, there is an insurance option! Disability insurance will give you a guaranteed monthly income for ongoing expenses to help replace your earnings over short or long term, depending on what type of policy your purchase.
A life insurance broker at BIG will be able to help you evaluate what coverage you might need. Get in contact with a broker today for a free consultation and quote!
All of us at BIG wish you and your loved ones a Happy Thanksgiving. May we be truly grateful for all we have because we have each other.
Congratulations!!!

You may have heard the terms ‘insurance agent’ and ‘insurance broker’ used interchangeably, but there a difference in the services they provide. Let’s take a look at those differences:
An insurance agent sells insurance from one single company. As the consumer, you have no way of knowing if the price on offer is the best one for the coverage you’re getting. It’s up to you to do your homework and shop around to compare to rates.
The advantage of working with a broker is they work FOR you, the consumer, not an insurance company. Here are the many advantages they offer:
- They have access to multiple insurance companies and can personalize your insurance based on your needs.
- Brokers are licensed to sell multiple products as a bundle – auto, home, life, etc. so you can get a package deal with discounts.
- Their in-depth knowledge of the evolving insurance landscape and services enables them to accurately compare insurance options from multiple carriers on your behalf.
- A broker will go to bat for you when making a claim because they are motivated to get the money for policyholders because they work FOR you.
At BIG you can trust that our brokers have your best interest at heart and will advocate for you. If you’re ready to connect with an insurance broker who will find the best insurance prices for your situation, contact us through our website.
