The first mass-produced toothbrush was invented in the UK by William Addis while he was in prison. In prison, Addis noticed other prisoners used a rag, soot, and salt to clean their teeth. Deeming this as ineffective, he snuck a small animal bone after a meal and drilled holes in it. He then used tufts of bristles he obtained from one of the guards and inserted them into the drilled holes. The toothbrush was finished by gluing the holes shut so the bristles didn't fall out.
