Ever wonder if your jaw pain might be linked to other symptoms? Many patients donโt realize they have temporomandibular joint (TMJ) dysfunction until we dig deeper. Here are some sneaky signs that might indicate TMJ issues:
1) Frequent Morning Headaches: Grinding your teeth at night (bruxism) can put extra stress on the TMJ and surrounding muscles, often leading to headaches.
2) Fatigue at the Dentist: If keeping your mouth open quickly tires you out, TMJ dysfunction could be making it harder to open wide for long periods.
3) Dizziness: The TMJ is close to key nerves involved in balance, such as the vestibulocochlear nerve. Inflammation or tension in the TMJ area can disrupt these systems, leading to dizziness or vertigo.
4) Ear Pain or Fullness: The TMJโs proximity to the ear means inflammation can cause a feeling of fullness or pain in the ear, and sometimes even temporary reduced hearing.
5) Tightness in the front of your Neck Pain or Pain with Yawning: The jaw muscles below your tongue and chin can become tense, causing discomfort in the front of your neck. Yawning requires a full range of motion in your jaw, and limited range can stress these muscles, leading to pain.

Think chewing gum will give you a defined jaw? Think again! Chewing gum might work your jaw muscles, but it doesnโt build definition like you might hope. It can also cause uneven stress on your jaw joints and muscles since we often chew on one side more than the other. Long periods of gum chewing can lead to repetitive strain on your jaw, especially the masseters, and cause misalignment of the TMJ (jaw joint).
If you don't have jaw issues, you can keep chewing gum, but I recommend limiting it to 15 minutes at a time to avoid unnecessary stress. For fresh breath, opt for mints that dissolve instead. And if you chew gum regularly, it might be wise to get your jaw checked by a specialist.

The easiest way to treat your jaw muscles is sneaking it into a skin care routine. Mix in a few rounds while putting on lotion on your cheeks. If you tend to clench your jaw at night do it before bed even!

โ๏ธIf you tend to clench or grind your teeth throughout the day maybe take a midday meditation approach.
๐if you clench or grind your teeth at night try a bed time meditation.
As for general relaxation tipsโฆ go for a walk, be dramatic as you exhale and sneak a few minutes to do something you enjoy

This causes repetitive overuse in the jaw, especially if you do this a lot throughout the day.

๐the last few weeks of pregnancy there can be a lot of tension and limitation in the pelvis, which doesnโt make delivery any easier. Treatments can help relax the surrounding hip and pelvis muscles and joints to encourage a smoother delivery for your baby
๐they say it takes a village to raise a baby and you deserve a support team to help guide/support you on your postnatal recovery once your baby comes

๐The jaw has two different joints that work together, so if one side is slightly bigger or smaller, you can hear some extra noises.
๐Not to worry, your body can adapt to this and itโs your bodyโs way to move the jaw

๐this happens a lot!! We have 2 joints working together to create movement, so thereโs bound to be some muscle imbalance.
๐You know how you have a dominant writing hand.. ๐ฑ๐ถ๐ฑ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ธ๐ป๐ผ๐ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐ฐ๐ฎ๐ป ๐ฎ๐น๐๐ผ ๐ต๐ฎ๐๐ฒ ๐ฎ ๐ฑ๐ผ๐บ๐ถ๐ป๐ฎ๐ป๐ ๐๐ถ๐ฑ๐ฒ ๐ผ๐ณ ๐๐ผ๐๐ฟ ๐ท๐ฎ๐ ๐๐ผ๐ ๐๐๐ฒ? ๐๐ผ๐ผ๐น ๐ฒ๐ต!

๐sounds like a grinding/ crunch referred to as crepitus
๐typically presents on one side and with limited mouth opening
๐ฆท๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ ๐๐ข๐ฌ๐ฉ๐ฅ๐๐๐๐ฆ๐๐ง๐ญ
๐can hear 1-2 clicks
๐thereโs a disc that acts as a cushion between your skull and lower jaw bones. It moves with your lower jaw as you open and close your mouth protecting the joint surfaces.
๐for some people the disc can either temporarily get stuck between the bones or stay in that stuck position.
๐thatโs as simple as I can make it for IG but thereโs more to it!
๐๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐จ๐ซ๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ ๐ฉ๐๐ง๐ข๐, ๐๐ฅ๐ข๐๐ค๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ข๐ฌ๐งโ๐ญ ๐ ๐ง๐๐๐๐ฌ๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ฅ๐ฒ ๐ ๐ฌ๐๐ซ๐ข๐จ๐ฎ๐ฌ ๐๐จ๐ง๐๐๐ซ๐ง but it can be helpful to understand where it is coming from. We canโt get rid of the noise for some cases but we can improve the function of the jaw to make sure there is better movement and less pain.

Jaw pain is something that is more and more common these day and often people donโt know where it comes from. There are a lot of common triggers that can bring it on or intensify it, so letโs better understand them.
1. ๐๐๐๐๐๐!! This is a big one, itโs a common reason Iโve seen my patients with jaw pain and itโs one for me too. Try including some relaxation techniques and deep breathing during those times
2. ๐๐ซ๐ข๐ง๐๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ญ๐๐๐ญ๐ก (๐๐ซ๐ฎ๐ฑ๐ข๐ฌ๐ฆ): a lot of my patients do this at times of stress or subconsciously during their sleep. Of course you canโt stop yourself if you arenโt awake but you can relax your jaw before bed to see if that helps reduce it.
3. ๐๐ฅ๐๐ง๐๐ก๐ข๐ง๐ ๐ฒ๐จ๐ฎ๐ซ ๐ฃ๐๐ฐ: this is one I find people donโt realize until after theyโve done it for a while. A big one for helping this trigger is AWARENESS, canโt reduce something you arenโt even aware you are doing.
4. ๐๐๐ ๐๐๐๐ข๐ญ๐ฌ (๐ ๐ฎ๐ฆ ๐๐ก๐๐ฐ๐ข๐ง๐ , ๐ง๐๐ข๐ฅ ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ , ๐๐ก๐๐๐ค ๐๐ข๐ญ๐ข๐ง๐ , ๐จ๐ซ ๐๐ก๐๐ฐ๐ข๐ง๐ ๐จ๐ง ๐ญ๐ก๐ ๐๐๐๐ค ๐จ๐ ๐ ๐ฉ๐๐ง). Nobodyโs perfect, we all have not so great habits weโve developed when we are bored or stressed. Again this required awareness but I also like to replace it with a good habit like a deep breath in and exhale with your mouth to relax your cheeks.
5. ๐๐ฉ๐ฉ๐๐ซ ๐ง๐๐๐ค ๐ฌ๐ญ๐ข๐๐๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ฌ ๐๐ง๐ ๐ญ๐ข๐ ๐ก๐ญ๐ง๐๐ฌ๐ฌ: okay this is one a lot of my patients donโt even realize are connected. Your upper neck helps stabilize your head to allow you to open and close your mouth. They share a really close relationship!
6. ๐๐๐ง๐ญ๐๐ฅ ๐ฐ๐จ๐ซ๐ค: Iโve seen this a lot in clinic, keeping your mouth opening for quite some time can lead to tension. So Iโm not saying avoid dental work at all, just know it might be helpful to see a manual therapist trained in TMJ afterwards.
