Sciatica pain is one of the most hindering lower back pains that a person can experience. Luckily it can be averted if you know what to look for. Today I discussed with my physiotherapy colleague about lower back pain. It is interesting that her approach is mostly on QL and pisiformis muscle.
However from my experience as an osteopath, we not only look at the body at the pov from the ankle to the head. Knee, hip, QL, piriformis, we will always look at one of the major muscles that connect from the leg to the spine which is known as psoas muscle. Majority of people have sciatica pain will have tightness in the psoas, psoas tightness is usually precede sciatica and can be avoided by doing stretches ( see image below). If you depress your finger in front where the psoas is located and you feel pain you should massage and stretch to avoid it

There are many people that come in with pain and the most common solution they seek is pain killers. This is a large misconception about pain. Pain is the indication of restricted blood flow through strain, sprain and/or dislocation, which does not allow the body to repair properly. Just like when you have a wound you need proper care and daily sanitation. With osteopath techniques, we mobilize your muscle and bone structure to restore the blood flow and allow your body to remove waste and have access to the proper nutrients to heal. Just remember when you're in pain, your body is telling you to come and look at it. Like a baby, give it love and care, massage it. Spine mobility can help.
Knee pain starts with the inability to flex your knee. The below muscles and tendons usually become tender which do not allow the knee cap to move freely, thus you feel knee pain. Without paying attention to these muscles, your range of motion is decreased and your knee pain is unavoidable which in time may lead to knee replacement. Recently working with a top Vietnamese Dr. Dư Quang Châu , we were able to rehabilitate a patient in a few sessions.

When you sit long hours in the office, your spine is being compressed and your sit bone and the muscles around it are being compressed and restricting blood flow which eventually results in back pain. The truth is, it is pelvic pain. The below is a self treatment for pelvic pain and the extra benefit is your sexual organ will thank you.

Last week's treatment reveals an interesting case on heel spur. A patient comes in with pain on a scale of 6-7 (7 being more painful.) On the bottom of their heel for more than 3 weeks with the pain gradually increasing as of late. Palpitation under the heel felt like a heel spur / bone formation which gave instant pain. I believed it would be a very painful treatment and take a few weeks to treat. However, on the first attempt of the soft tissue in the tendon and traction on the heel was treated and the pain was reduced to a 5. I decided to palpitate the ankle to max rom, I heard a click and the pain was reduced to a minimum the heel spur was completely gone. The patient was thrilled. A very interesting lesson.
