Devotional for January 4, 2023

God's Direction for the Journey Ahead

Scripture: Psalm 143:8

“Let me hear of your steadfast love in the morning,
for in you I put my trust.
Teach me the way I should go,
for to you I lift up my soul.”


As we begin this new year, how do we know the path we should take going forward? How many of us have discovered this expected path on our own? We live in a time when everyone seeks direction. We often run after those who seem to have the solutions to the problems we face, those who promise to lead us in the direction we want to go. In the midst of it all, there is the true guidance that seeks to take us through the many pathways of life and lead us to the place of total joy in the presence of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. I speak of that divine guidance that comes only from God.

Divine guidance is very important to us and very much needed in our daily lives. The truth is that we cannot find the way by ourselves. I remember a song that says, “Dear Lord I cannot go without you, for my faith at best is weak; and I need your light to shine around me; for I cannot find my way alone”. Friends, a life directed by the Holy Spirit is the most effective and enjoyable life.

As we begin this new year, let us reflect on the many times we were at our wits end in the past years, the many times we were in uncertain situations, the many times we were at crossroads, not knowing where to turn; let us remember how in all those situations we called upon the Lord and the way became clear to us, our situation changed for the better when the Lord pointed out the way for us to go. As we go forward into the uncertainties of 2023, let us be guided by the same Lord who remains faithful to those who keep their trust in him. Let us put the directing of our lives into God’s hands.

As we go forward in faith one thing, we can be certain of is this, God’s directives never fail those who unquestioningly and unflinchingly follow God’s leading. As Frances R. Havergal penned in 1873 ‘He will never fail us, He will not forsake; His eternal covenant he will never break. Resting on His promise, what have we to fear? God is all-sufficient for the coming year. Onward then and fear not, children of the day, for His word shall never, never pass away.

My sisters and brothers I wish for you and yours a year divinely directed by the Holy Spirit of Almighty God. May you yield your will to God’s, as we move forward in faith in 2023. Amen.
