Piriformis syndrome can be caused by various factors, including prolonged sitting, direct trauma to the buttocks, or repetitive activities that strain the muscle. Symptoms typically include a deep, aching pain in the buttock, which can become more severe during activities like climbing stairs, running, or sitting for extended periods.
