Effective Treatment of Chronic Pain Injuries

All of us at some point will experience a chronic pain due to an injury that just won’t go away.   Chronic Pain injuries usually occur when an initial injury doesn’t heal completely.   Go down the road some time and the same injury may re-occur.   In many cases once an injury doesn’t completely heal and then re-occurs it becomes a chronic pain injury which can be very difficult to treat.

Most conventional therapies while providing some positive results may require something that stimulates and speeds up the recovery process.   This is where SHOCKWAVE THERAPY comes in.  Shockwave Therapy is non-invasive, with no side effect and accelerates the recovery process.  If you want excellent results in treatment of:

· Plantar Fasciitis and Heel Spurs

· Rotator Cuff Injuries and Frozen Shoulder

· Tennis Elbow

· Shin Splints

· Tendinitis and Bursitis

· Scar Tissues

· Hamstring Muscle Injuries

Shockwave is an excellent treatment for the above conditions often reducing the number of treatments significantly vs other forms of therapy.

Repetitive Strain Injuries (Part 2)

Last post we discussed what Repetitve Strain Injuries are and some of the symptoms.   Looking a little deeper Repetitive Strain Injuries can affect your muscles, tendons and nerves in:

·        Finger and thumbs

·        Elbow such as Tennis Elbow or Golfer’s Elbow

·        Shoulders such as Rotator Cuff Injuries

·        Knees conditions such as Iliotibial Band Syndrome or Patellofemoral Femoral syndrome

·        Wrist conditions such as Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Repetitive Strain Injuries are caused by doing the same movement until it starts to hurt the joint or muscles affected.   Simple movements such as working on your keyboard or mouse can cause RSI.

The best way to avoid Repetitive Strain Injuries is to avoid or modify movements that are causing your pain/symptoms.   Resting the affected area will help your body recover.   Fore chronic Repetitive Strain Injuries contact your health care provider such as a Physiotherapist or Acupuncturist and they can determine what is causing your pain/symptoms and come up with a treatment plan to treat the condition.

Repetitive Strain Injuries

A Repetitive Strain Injury or RSI is a strain that occurs over time that can affect muscles, tendons and nerves from Repetitive motions.   RSI can affect your hands and wrists, neck and shoulders as well as your forearms and elbows.  RSI can be work related or even activities of daily living such as:

Typing or using a computer mouse

Using tools for work

Sports training

Gardening

All trades people that use repetitive movments

RSI can often be Carpal Tunnel Syndrome, Tennis or Golfer’s Elbow, Bursitis and Rotator Cuff to name just a few.

Common Symptoms of RSI are:

Tenderness

Tingling or numbness

Throbbing

Swelling

Pain can range from mild to severe

Weakness

Symptoms can begin gradually and become more intense and constant.   Fortunately in many cases REST is the best medicine.   Stopping the activities or altering movements may stop the signs and symptoms of RSI and is best to do once you may notice the symptoms.  For chronic RSI treatment may consist of Physiotherapy, Shockwave Therapy and Acupuncture.

No Pain No Gain

We have all heard that saying No Pain No Gain as it something many strive for when doing a spirited workout or exercise.   However within the context of physiotherapy does No Pain No Gain really the idea?

First of all pain is your bodies way of telling you protect itself.   Touch something hot and your body automatically pulls your hand away from the source.   The same goes when doing an activity whether gym related or activities around the house, when something causes the pain your body is telling you to back of or lighten whatever you are doing.    This is different than having muscle soreness following a workout or some achy or tight muscle.

If you experience pain during a workout you may have to change the exercise(s) that initiates the pain or stop doing that particular exercise.   Pushing through pain while working out can lead to a more serious injury which will lead to more down time as your body will need time to recover.

If you experience pain during a workout and/or are injured come to Dynamic Physiotherapy where our Registered Physiotherapists, Massage Therapists and Acupuncturists can help get you back on track quickly and safely.

Types of Pain

Nobody enjoys pain but pain is a necessary sensation and is the body’s way of telling you something isn’t right.   Having pain therefore lets you know that you either need to do something about it or stop doing something that is creating the pain.

OF course each person is different from one another in that some people’s perception of pain and pain tolerance varies.

There are five common types of pain:

Acute Pain means the pain is short in duration lasting from just minutes up to about 3 months.   A soft tissue injury typically subsides after the injury heals.   An acute pain however may evolve into chronic pain if the injury doesn’t heal correctly.

Chronic Pain is longer in duration and can be constant or an intermittent pain.   Chronic pain is often due to a health condition such as arthritis, or a recurring pain that won’t go away.

Neuopathic Pain is pain due to the damage of the nerves or other parts of the nervous system.   It is often described as a shooting, burning or stabbing pain and may feel like pins and needles.   These pain can often be so severe that performing everyday tasks is difficult.

Nociceptive Pain is a type of pain caused by damage to body tissue and is often described as a sharp achy or throbbing pain.   This type of pain is often experience in joints/muscles/tendons and bones.   It can be either acute or chronic pain.

Radicular pain is pain where a nerve gets compressed or inflamed.   The pain radiates from one location to another such as sciatic pain which originates in the lower back but can radiate down to the foot.   This type of pain is often constant and some may experience tingling, numbness or muscle weakness.

This week we have been covering Core Muscles and their importance. The Core Muscles are important for many reasons and should be done by everyone for better Balance, Stability, and making everyday activities easier to navigate. With that in mind the core muscle exercises don’t have to be difficult and can be done by anyone.

Today we will cover several Beginner Core Exercises that can be done at home without any special equipment. The most basic Core Exercise one can do at home is the plank which starts out with one on their stomach and then supporting your body weight in a straight line with your elbows flat on the floor and your toes pointed into the ground. This can be done for about 10-15 seconds and then rest followed by another 6-7 of these same exercises.

If this is too easy or if increasing difficulty you can do the plank with one arm extended of the ground while the opposite foot is extended of the ground. This particular exercise requires more balance and is a little more difficult to do. You will do the same as above with about 8 or so reps holding the plank for 10-15 seconds.

Top Benefits of Strong Core Muscles

In our last post we discussed why Strong Core Muscles were helpful.   Here we discuss the top Benefits of Strong Core muscles such as:

Supports Better Posture.  Your core is more than just your abs it also wraps around your torso and back.   These muscles of the core helps keep you upright and with good posture.

Improved Balance.  Strong core muscles help maintain and improve body balance and keep your body upright and steady.

Increased Stability.  A strong core helps you stay steady regardless of the activity such as a workout, gardening or activities of daily living.

Strong Core Protects your Internal Organs.  Any external force on your core can damage your internal organs such as Spleen, Liver and Kidneys.   The stronger the core the stronger the shield to protect those organs.

Can make everyday life better and reduce pain.  Regular daily activities are easier with a strong core.   Stronger core leads to better posture and balance which can reduce or prevent muscle pain due to irritation and discomfort.

Helps you age well.  A stronger core that helps posture balance and stability can help prevent falls, decrease back pain and helps to keep you mobile as you age.

Core strengthening doesn’t have to be difficult and can be a routine done at home without any expensive equipment or the need of a gym.

Frozen Shoulder

Frozen shoulder is a painful condition with significant restrictions in movements at the shoulder joint. The shoulder capsule becomes tightened and inflexible. Frozen Shoulder has 3 stages:

An Initial (Acute) Stage – capsule of the shoulder becomes painfully contracted

A Subacute stage – fibrosis (excess tissue) stage where fibres of muscle/tissue holds things together

A Chronic stage – where the inflexibility gradually releases

Frozen shoulder if left untreated can take up to two years to heal. Therefore for ideal results we recommend that treatment for frozen shoulder should begin immediately with Physiotherapy and/or Acupuncture

What is Acute Pain?

Acute pain is a pain that comes on suddenly and is caused by something specific such as an injury, a burn, a broken bone or torn ligament.  Acute pain is sudden and can be sharp depending on the extent of an injury.  A paper cut is an acute pain and can be very painful.

The good thing with acute pain it usually doesn’t last very long and tends to slowly get better as the injury heals.   Acute pains go away when there is no longer a cause for the pain.

Some examples of Acute Pain:

·         Broken Bones

·         Cuts or burns

·         Torn muscles or ligaments

·         Dental work

·         Labor and childbirth

Most acute pains go away quickly as opposed to chronic pain which can last longer than six months.  While most acute pains will eventually resolve themselves over time, some injuries may require surgery or an intervention such as Physiotherapy, Massage Therapy or Acupuncture to help speed up the healing process.

Treatment of an Acute Injury that comes from injuries to muscle, ligaments and tendons benefit from early intervention.  At Dynamic Physiotherapy our skilled professionals will help you get back on track by helping to speed up the healing process.

We can:

·         Reduce Inflammation and swelling faster the earlier you begin treatment

·         Reduce Pain and help restore any lost range of motion

Some acute pains may not require any intervention and simply go away on their own.  For help to speed up the healing process contact us at

What is Bell’s Palsy?

Bell’s Palsy is a condition involving a lesion (damage or wounded) facial nerve number that results in flaccid paralysis (weakness or reduced muscle tone) of the muscles used for facial expression. This weakness causes one side of the face to droop and may affect your sense of taste and how you make saliva and tears.

The causes of Bell’s Palsy are not entirely understood but some scientists believe a viral or common cold sore virus may contribute to Bell’s Palsy. Facial muscles that are swollen or inflamed or compressed may compress the facial nerve causing Bell’s Palsy Exposure to a chill or draft while sleeping may contribute to Bell’s Palsy.

SYMPTOMS OF BELL’S PALSY

· Can be rapid unilateral (one sided) weakness followed by flaccid paralysis of the muscles of facial expression

· Inability to raise eyebrows

· Incomplete closure of the eye

· Loss of blinking reflex – results in tears or lack of tears

· Cannot actively flare nostrils

· Inability to raise the corners of the mouth or to whistle

· Difficulty with eating

· Facial sagging or drooping on one side

Bell’s Palsy can clear up on its own within several months however some may develop permanent muscle weakness. Treatment for Bell’s Palsy would focus on reducing any inflammation/swelling or compression of the facial nerve. Treatment with Physiotherapy and/or Acupuncture can help reduce symptoms and treatment would focus on the muscles of facial expression.

Shockwave Benefits:

· Accelerates healing process

· Non-Invasive or non-surgical treatment

· No side effects

· Able to treat a wide range of medical conditions

Shockwave Treatment for:

· Plantar Fasciitis and Heel Spurs

· Rotator Cuff Injuries and Frozen Shoulder

· Tennis Elbow
