The Lifesaving Society designates the third week in July as National Drowning Prevention Week. Throughout the week, we will be sharing some drowning prevention tips!

Day 5: Supervising children in, on & around water (World Drowning Prevention Day)

97% of children who drown have either no supervision or distracted supervision. Children are naturally curious but are the least capable of self-rescue of any group, leaving them at a very high risk for drowning. To prevent this, parents should stay within arm's reach of their children anytime they are around water.

To help parents be Water Smart, the Lifesaving Society launched a website, which is designed to help inform parents of water safety. This includes safety around watersports, vacation tips, and seasonal advice. There is also a quiz for parents that will test their knowledge. https://watersmartparents.ca/

Today is also World Drowning Prevention Day, as declared by WHO. 236,000 people drown every year and rural communities are disproportionately affected.

Day 4: Swim to Survive

To prevent drowning from unexpected falls into deep water, the Lifesaving Society has presented a Swim to Survive minimum skill requirements list. The program was launched in 2005 and around one million children have participated in it. The swim to survive skill set includes swimming 50m, treading water for 60s, and rolling into deep water.

Day 3: Backyard Pool & Open Water Safety

11% of drownings occur in a pool, and 67% of drownings occur on open water. When helping rescue someone, use the ladder approach:

Talk: encourage the victim to get to safety by swimming
Throw: throw a buoyant aid
Reach: reach for the victim from a dry and safe location
Wade: wade in shallow water and throw rescue aid to the victim or enter deep water while holding onto a solid object
Row: use a watercraft until you are close enough to extend a rescue object
Swim: swim to the victim and provide them with a buoyant aid
Tow: tow by pulling on the other extremity of the rescue object
Carry: swim and carry the victim to safety as last resort

The Lifesaving Society designates the third week in July as National Drowning Prevention Week. Throughout the week, we will be sharing some drowning prevention tips!

Day 2: Non-fatal Drowning

Drowning is the process of taking water or other liquids into the lungs. This process can either result in a fatal drowning, or if rescued or noticed in time, a non-fatal drowning. Non-fatal drownings are still extremely dangerous. For every fatal drowning, there are nearly four non-fatal drownings that require a trip to the ER. Non-fatal drownings can cause serious injuries or permanent disabilities.

One of the ways to avoid drowning is by swimming with a buddy. According to Lifesaving Society, nearly 32% of drownings happen when someone is swimming alone. No matter how skilled someone is at swimming, accidents and trouble can occur, and they may need help. To help prevent drowning, having a buddy with to call for help or to perform rescue measures is crucial.

To help equip community members to be prepared, Junior Lifeguards will be at both the Iroquois and Morrisburg beaches to help demonstrate how to do CPR, lifejacket learning, and how to throw a lifesaving buoyant aid. They will be there today, Monday, July 22 and Wednesday, July 24 from 3:00 pm to 4:00 pm. Come on out and learn these essential skills!

Along one of South Dundas' borders, runs the St. Lawrence River. The river is home to many cottages, marinas, and beaches, including our own Galop Canal Marina and the Iroquois and Morrisburg Beaches.

The Lifesaving Society designates the third week in July as National Drowning Prevention Week. Over the next 7 days, we will be sharing some drowning prevention tips!

Day 1: Fatal Drowning

Over 400 Canadians die in preventable water-related incidents annually. Today, we want to share the reminder that most rivers and lakes in Ontario are often cold, even throughout the summer. It is important to be prepared and to be aware of the risks associated with cold water. Wearing a lifejacket is one of the best ways to stay safe if you fall into cold water. If you are not already wearing a lifejacket, try to get access to one to put it on. This will help you keep your face and mouth out of the water so you can breathe. Get back on your boat if possible, and if not, try to minimize heat loss as much as possible by staying still or hugging your body.

🛟Lifesaving Stations🛟

Parks, Recreation & Facilities staff have been working on installing Lifesaving Stations in various areas of the many South Dundas waterfronts. These stations are to be equipped with a reaching pole and buoyant throwing aid.

These items are essential to ensure the public has access to rescue equipment to assist in a water emergency, without having to enter the water or to provide safety separation from the victim if they do enter the water.

You may have noticed construction happening in some of our parks. This month the Parks, Recreation and Facilities department is busy working on upgrades to our parks.

More lights are going in along the Iroquois Waterfront Park, brand new gazebos are being constructed at Loyalist Park and Steward Park, a new swing set at J.C. Whitteker Park in Williamsburg is being installed, and construction is starting at Haldane Park for the Iroquois Outdoor Rink.

While the construction goes on, there may be some closures. We ask that you be respectful of the contractors while they work on making our parks even more wonderful!

They are a superfood that are tasty, very nutritional, very high in vitamins, minerals, enzymes, and antioxidants. Microgreens can be easily grown at home year- round. Growing your own is the best way to always have fresh microgreens to add to your favourite foods. In less than 2 weeks you'll be able to harvest your greens. All you need is a grow kit, water and a windowsill or grow light.
