So heartbreaking to hear the news of the loss of Kim Novak! Kim was a fantastic, energetic activist that inspired many and her loss will be felt far and wide. Our condolences go out to Kim's family and friends, as well as UFCW during this difficult time! πŸ•―οΈβœŠπŸ»πŸ₯–πŸŒΉ

It is with heavy hearts that we must share the tragic news that this past weekend, UFCW 1518 President Kim Novak passed away, surrounded by her family and loved ones.

We at UFCW 1518 are devastated by this news. For many years, Kim has been an integral part of our Union, an inspiring leader, and a dear friend.

President Kim Novak led a remarkable life that made a positive difference in the lives of countless people. Throughout her time with UFCW 1518, Kim held various leadership roles, including as a union representative, director, and Secretary-Treasurer. When Kim was unanimously elected President of UFCW 1518, she made history as the first woman and youngest leader of our Union. She also served as Vice-President of UFCW International and on the UFCW Canada National Council. She dedicated her entire career to the fight for dignity and respect for all workers, leading the way not only for our Union, but the wider labour movement.

Kim's leadership was marked by her deep connection to UFCW 1518 members and we know this loss will be deeply felt by many of you.

We offer our deepest condolences to Kim’s family and ask that their privacy be respected at this extremely difficult time.

In the coming weeks, we will share information on how our members and the wider community can join us in recognizing Kim’s legacy and the lasting impact she made on our movement.

As Kim’s family said best: β€œdo something today to embody how Kimberly lived. Be kind, make someone laugh, lend a hand.”

Let us honour her memory by carrying forward her spirit of service, kindness, and compassion.

This evening, members of the NDDLC joined member of the Nanaimo Pride Society and other community members for a Candlelight Vigil for Transgender Day of Remembrance at the Bastion. We read out 337 names of people who lost their lives since last year. And, as we know, trans deaths are underreported. One person losing their life because of who they are is one too many. 🩡🩷🀍🩷🩡

Tentative agreement reached with Treasury Board for 120,000 members 05/01/2023

PSAC has reached a tentative agreement with the treasury board!! Way to go, PSAC!!

One day longer, one day stronger!! Solidarity!!! ✊✊✊

Tentative agreement reached with Treasury Board for 120,000 members After nearly two years of bargaining leading to one of the largest strikes in Canadian history, PSAC has reached tentative agreements for the more than 120,000 Treasury Board workers who deliver critical services to Canadians.

Today, we travelled across our region, to stop and remember the 181 workers who lost their lives last year in BC because of their job. Workplace illness is still the top killer of workers, and with the regulations regarding asbestos just recently changing, we don't see that trend changing in the near future.

Every worker deserves to come home whole, after earning a living to live their lives, and support their families. No worker should have to go through a live-changing injury, physical or mental, and no loved one should have to get that call, that their loved one isn't coming home from work again.

We stop, take stock, mourn those we've lost, and recommit to fighting for better workplace conditions, stronger health and safety regulations and safer workplaces.

The Labour Movement has fought hard for workplace health and safety rights, and we continue to fight, until a workplace death is a distant memory!!

So, on this National Day of Mourning 2023, we, once again, mourn the dead, and fight like hell for the living!!

In Solidarity! ✊ πŸ¦β€β¬›

Finished out the day at the National Day of Mourning ceremony in Parksville reminding everyone present that workers have the right to know about safety procedures at work and to refuse unsafe work without fear of retaliation.

Many thanks to the many speakers and volunteers who made these events possible, and to all those who strive every day to ensure that work sites are safe.

Every person deserves a work site that is physically and mentally safe. Almost 100 community members gathered today in Nanaimo to honour all who have been impacted by workplace injuries, illnesses and fatalities. In 2022, over 10% of all reported workplace deaths in BC were on Vancouver Island. We must all be dedicated to creating safe, healthy workplaces so that these preventable tragedies are stopped before they happen.

Today at Lake Cowichan, 3 dozen activists and community members gathered for the National Day of Mourning ceremony. While we mourn for those we've lost, we commit to continue fighting like he!! for the living and look forward to the day when no worker is injured or killed at work.

04/28/2023

Today is the National Day of Mourning honouring workers who have been injured or killed on the job. Today we remember those whose lives have been changed forever by workplace illnesses, injuries or deaths. These illnesses and injuries are preventable and we must all be committed to keeping work spaces safe.

Join us today at one of our ceremonies: 10am at Lake Cowichan's Forest Workers' Memorial Park; 12:30 at Nanaimo's Harbourfront Plaza; or 5:30pm at Parksville's Community Beach Park gazebo.
