Too cute! Our tracking students love finding humans too!

Looking to keep your puppy busy? This is my current favourite enrichment toy. There’s little stuffed squirrel balls all with 1 treat under them. It keeps Legend busy - working her brain and dexterity. We switch between this one and a snuffle mat in the mornings so I can get some work done.

DISC DOG CLASSES

Starting July 11 at 3pm

Details here: https://wheresyoursit.com/services/disc-dog/

*Your dog must be off leash reliable for this class

My litter of puppies working on their crate training.

To start we feed all meals in the crates plus special treats like bones. I open the crate doors BEFORE the puppies are finished so there’s no feeling of being trapped. The crates have also been in their puppy pen without doors for weeks. This makes the crates feel like a safe and good place.

Remember to go slow and keep things positive for your puppy!

Super important tips!

Your dog trainer can also help you find the right puppy. Don’t be too shy to ask!

05/17/2024

🥜The peanut butter stuffed Kong continues to be one of the most popular daily dog treats. It can take up a large part of your dog's overall calories without providing the benefits that fresh food contributes.

Peanut butter sticks on your dog's teeth (not great for oral health) and if you leave them in a crate or pen they are probably going to be thirsty and need a lot of water after! Not the best idea if they aren't going to be able to relieve themselves for awhile.

This photo shows actual amounts of fresh food that your dog could have over a week -the same amount of calories as 1 TBS x 7 days. (Keep in mind many people put more than just 1 TBSP in the kong each time)!

This one change in your routine could make such a positive impact on your dog's health!

The foods here are chicken breast, ground beef, eggs, broccoli, blueberries, plain applesauce, plain yogurt.

They'd receive:

🍗🥚high quality protein,
🥦antioxidants for cancer protection,
🍎pre and probiotics for healthy gut function.

If you want to stuff a food puzzle 🧩 why not try swapping PB out with plain yogurt, pumpkin, applesauce or various dog friendly baby food blends - freeze them to last longer. Blend yogurt with some berries or mix yogurt with some plain pumpkin. Many of the fresh foods in the pic can be mixed and put in a puzzle!

*calories are based on 🥜 that is 95 calories per TBSP.

𝗔𝘀 𝘆𝗼𝘂 𝗸𝗻𝗼𝘄, 𝗜 𝗹𝗼𝘃𝗲 𝘀𝗲𝗻𝗶𝗼𝗿 𝗱𝗼𝗴𝘀!

Here are some things to consider as your dog ages:

➡️ There is no need to restrict protein unless there is a medical condition. As your dog ages you may notice a decrease in lean body mass and high quality protein (essential amino acids) is important for tissue repair, immune system support and stress response. Personalized diets help ensure protein/amino acid requirements are met even when calorie requirements may decrease.

➡️ Consider proactive supplements like CoQ10, Vitamin E, B complex and glucosamine/chondroitin products combined with a nutrient dense diet

➡️It’s critical your dog’s diet meets their nutrient requirements, many reserves may be depleted if their diet hasn’t been optimal.

➡️If you find you need to cut their food back quite a bit or they gain weight- remember less food equals less nutrients. Look for a food that has fewer calories, but still has quality protein.

➡️Cruciferous veggies like broccoli, brussels sprouts and cabbages and berries such as blueberries, blackberries and raspberries contain various phytonutrients to help boost your senior’s diet.

➡️ IF their diet is balanced, AND they're getting fresh foods and supps mentioned above, then look at additions like mushrooms, turmeric paste, decaf green tea, and/or bone broth on a case by case basis. These are extras to help with inflammation and for immune/cancer support, cognitive and joint support.

➡️Increase vet visits (blood work and urinalysis) to semi annually so you can catch any minor problems before they escalate.

➡️Ensure your dog is trim and keep them active. Instead of one long walk per day, consider splitting it up into multiple walks.

🌳Let them sniff!

🧩Change up where you walk, feed some of their meals in puzzles (if they don't get frustrated) teach them a new trick. We can get a bit complacent because they sleep more and seem content - but mental stimulation is so important for their cognitive health!

A great treat option!

The humble apple is often overshadowed by berries 🫐 and exotic fruits 🍉🥭 but don’t dismiss this nutritious fruit!

🍎Apples are easy to find and reasonably priced.

🍏Apples are rich in pectin, which is a soluble fiber that offers prebiotic benefits.

🍎These fibers increase butyrate, a short chain fatty acid that helps promote the growth of beneficial gut bacteria.

🍏Apples are high in polyphenols that protect the body from oxidative stress.

🍎 Organic apples have a more diverse microbiota than conventional apples.

🍎🍏Don't think your dog likes apples? There are many varieties of apples and just like us, they may prefer a certain variety- perhaps it was too tart? Try one of the sweeter varieties like honeycrisp, gala or golden delicious.

Remember – because they are fairly high in fiber, start with just a small treat size amount. Remember to remove the core/seeds. 🐾

🍎Is your dog a fan of apples?

ADOLESCENCE:
As dogs go through adolescence, it’s safe to say things turn a little topsy-turvy! 🙃

If you’re currently at this stage and feeling like you’ve taken one step forward and two steps back, don’t panic! During this stage of life, there’s a lot going on in their busy little brains.

Here are three facts about the adolescent brain 🧠👇

1. The inhibitory neurons of the amygdala that help to dampen down emotional responses don’t fully mature until the END of adolescence.

2. Communication between the frontal cortex and amygdala, which is essential for skills training, decreases during adolescence.

3. Extinction memory is impaired during adolescence, so if your dog has a bad experience it’s much more likely to lead to a ‘hard wired’ fear memory.

Have patience and compassion as you support and guide your dog through this vulnerable period of brain development.

Did you know that both environmental and food allergies can contribute to butt scooting and a**l gland issues?

Most people focus solely on fiber when their dog has a**l gland issues - and it's a good place to start. But chronic a**l gland problems can also be secondary to allergies.

If you've recently changed foods or added in new treats around the same time that your dog started scooting, consider testing the new foods as a potential trigger.

Does your dog scoot in spring 🌱and fall 🍂 with no other changes to diet? Wipe down paws, the peria**l and tail area after exposure outside, especially if they've been scooting on grass.

Do you live in an area with fleas? Flea bite allergies can also cause biting at the tail and butt scooting.

If you've tried adjusting fiber with no positive changes don't rule out possible allergens! Often you need to address both fiber and allergens.
