Hello everyone!
As the new year approaches, I have great news!! I'll be starting work again as of JANUARY 5th, 2018 at HILOT MASSAGE THERAPY! Hilot (meaning massage therapy in filipino) is a registered massage therapy clinic with four RMTs, including myself :) It's located in North Nanaimo on Dover road, a great location with ample parking. Hilot provides a positive & professional, yet cozy environment.
For the time being, we are keeping our little one's caregiving parental, so I will only be returning to work one day a week. I will be working on FRIDAYs from 12-5PM. You can book in for a treatment online (starting December 15th), or by e-mail, by messaging me on my RMT page, or by calling the clinic starting today!

FASCIA FASCIA FASCIA
Have you ever heard your practitioner use the term fascia and wondered what exactly is this fascia thing?! Here's a short exert (mostly paraphrased & quoted from Yoga Anatomy) to help explain what fascia is and how to keep it healthy!
Fascia is a fiber & fluid based system with multiple layers (superficial, deep, and loose), including ligaments & tendons. Think of fascia as the white pith surrounding an orange, holding each segment together. Fascia connects our muscles, bones, organs, nerves, and blood vessels together into a whole interconnected network. Fascial alone has 1000 pounds of tension per square inch.. think about how much pull that has in our bodies! Especially if the fascial isn't functioning optimally. Our muscles are encapsulated and interwoven with the three layers of fascia. These three fascial layers blend together at either end of a muscle and become its tendons. Fascia and muscle are so interconnected that a muscle and its tendons, is sometimes referred to as a myofascial unit.
To keep our fascia healthy, and functioning optimally, we should engaged in varied exercises, as opposed to repetitive movements (ie. always biking, running, doing the same yoga practice, having static work postures, etc.). Fascial tissues will grow weaker if we load them the same way all the time, which makes us more prone to injury. By engaging in a variety of non-repetitive movements, and taking care of our bodies (ie. treating yourself to regular therapeutic massage :) ) our fascia will become stronger and more resilient by adapting to the variety of movements. As quoted directly from Yoga Anatomy, 'movement variability [is one] most powerful tools we can utilize when it comes to aging gracefully in our bodies.'
So there you go. Such a small term, such a huge impact on our systems as a whole!

As we jump into summer (tomorrow!!), we throw on our flip flops & add a splash of color to our toes that have been hidden all winter. I used to paint my toes (year round actually) until my spouse could no longer stand the smell in the house. This made me think about what I was putting ON & INTO my body. With a little research & some farewell tears to my favourite polishes, I have had naked toes ever since. There are lots of healthier polishes out there, just not in Canada yet. At 4 am on Saturday January 30ith, the Bartolo’s (three adults & one 7-week old Rottweiler/Bull Mastiff puppy) lost everything they owned as their family home burnt to the ground. Barely clothed, they escaped with their lives but every possession they owned was destroyed. While they are happy to be alive, they are trying to rebuild their lives with limited insurance currently. They are in need of temporary furnishings until their house is rebuilt, which will likely take over a year..

I recently had the privilege of attending one of Deepak Chopra's seminars with my dad. What a powerful experience! The most continual concept Deepak, yogic practice, eastern & even western health sciences continually address is the importance of meditation. As Deepak instills, only 5 % of gene mutation are fully penetrant. The rest are due to stress!
