🌽 POLLINATION IS WELL UNDERWAY 🌽

What an exciting time…the process of pollination is in full swing here at Snyder’s Sweet Corn!

Once the plant has stretched out and the tassels are reaching for the sky, the timing is perfect for the cobs to put out their silks! Now between wind and other natural efforts, the pollen will release from the tassels and land on the awaiting and sticky silks.

Did you know that each silk is attached to a kernel of corn, much like an umbilical cord to a baby? Once pollinated, the silk will naturally disconnect from the kernel and start to dry down and turn brown. Now each kernel will begin to plump up and be filled with the sweet and delicious flavour we all enjoy!

🌽 We are anticipating our 2024 harvest start date to be Saturday July 20th…just 17 SLEEPS to go! 🌽

Looking very forward to serving you then!

🌽 Today is Thursday June 20th 🌽

My man knows how to thrill my corn loving heart! Some girls get flowers but I prefer cobs of corn!!!

Here nestled deep inside its cosy sheath is our first cob of corn! It may be small but it is definitely mighty as it has already decided how many rows around and how many delicious kernels might be enjoyed! If you look closely you can even see the tiny silks shooting out of each individual kernel!

It won’t be long now until silks are visible down the row and ready to begin pollination!

Stay tuned for the next exciting chapter of our 2024 crop 🤗

This baby corn needs help…and we are up to the task 🤗

In previous seasons we had to walk each row of corn searching for and releasing each of these little guys with Snyder Loving Care. While walking and bending was great exercise, it was challenging to help them all through in a timely manner. Pulling corn plants up through the holes before they become sun bleached is an important step in maximizing the plants ability to feed itself through photosynthesis!

Meet ‘Penny’ our ‘Corn Pulling Pal’! Penny is a super efficient and safe way to get down low in the field and find our little friends in need of rescuing!

While it is still a relatively slow process, it’s definitely less tedious and we are thankful for another opportunity to steward our crop for you!

Down the row we grow!

What a great day when you can row corn 🤗

Each seed is planted 8” apart under our biodegradable ‘plastic’ and each row is spaced every 30” across the field.

We grow our sweet corn crop on the same row every year using sub inch GPS technology. This practice allows us to ‘drive where we drive’ and ‘grow where we grow’ in an effort to eliminate compaction in the root zone. Compaction reduces soil aeration and can stunt the root development which leads to weaker plants and stressed corn.

Happy corn = happy customers!!

We planted our first ‘bare ground’ sweet corn yesterday afternoon!

This process is a 2 man job on initial setup to ensure that the equipment is operating at peak performance 🤗

All settings are double checked and once some corn is in the ground we check that spacing and depth are correct. .

If you look closely you will see 2 little pink seeds nestled snuggly in the ground with no sign of how they got there! This is a job well done!

Todays field check revealed more parts that are the foundation of our developing corn plant!

Lateral seminal roots

These unsung heros are what will bring nutrients to the young plant and help anchor it in the soil!

Mesocotyl

The mesocotyl is the tubular, white, stemlike tissue connecting the seed and the base of the coleoptile. Basically it is the beginning of what we see as the stalk of the plant below the soil 🤗

Radicle Root

And of course the radicle root will continue to grow downward into the soil, anchoring the seedling and many fibrous roots will shoot off of it.

Just 10 hours have gone by since our last photo op and that tiny sprout has already sent out its radicle root.

🌽 Today is Monday April 29th 🌽

It’s finally here…planting day! At least it’s Day 1 of planting 🤗

Planting into the biodegradable mulch…aka ‘plastic’…is a VERY slow process!

As the 2 row poly planter runs along the field, it pokes a hole and drops a seed every 8”. Each seed is nestled into the soil to a depth of about 1-1/2” and hopefully into a nice warm and moist seed bed.

Thomas drives less than 2 MPH and has about 6 acres to plant which will take about 8 hours! Be sure to give him a honk and a wave as you drive by…he will be there for a while yet 🤪

We will check the progress of these seeds every couple of days so be sure to LIKE and FOLLOW us so you can watch them grow too!

🌽 Today is Monday April 22nd! 🌽

While it’s always a good day here on our farm, today is a GREAT day! It’s finally ’plastic’ laying day 🤗

Each year spring is announced in Haldimand County by the shimmering rows of biodegradable mulch laying in our bridge flats field along the mighty Grand River!

While there are no seeds in the ground yet, we have been busy preparing the soil so that our mulch layer can do its job well. This mulch will act a bit like a greenhouse and heat the soil and maintain the moisture for when the seeds are planted in just a few days from now!

Not to worry about this product staying around too long because it will have completely decomposed by the time summer is over without leaving and harmful residues in our soil! We love our bio-technology!

🌽 Today is Saturday April 20th 🌽

What does a Snyder do when the equipment is ready and they are waiting for the land to be fit to start working ground?

We do seed germ tests!!

We test the germination of the seed to make sure that we have realistic expectations of how many viable plants we can expect to grow from the seeds planted!

After aligning the individual seeds in rows and columns, we cover with paper towels and then moisten daily. The seeds are then nestled under a warm blanket to create cozy dark growing conditions that mimic their life in the soil. Three days later we count the sprouted kernels and enter the data into a spreadsheet to give us our average germ.

What a great way to spend a cool Saturday in April!

Our Story

In the beginning...
During the summer of 1981, people driving along Regional Road 9, saw a quaint, little corn stand on the side of the road. To ensure that every customer got a dozen good cobs, Charlie Snyder insisted on throwing in a couple of extra.

Over the years, that little stand has turned over a lot of dozens and what was just courtesy at the time has become known as the “Snyder Dozen”.

Growing Together
The business has changed a lot through the years. What was once
a two-week wholesale operation is now a seven-week season focusing
on retail sales. In 2003, Charlie passed over the reigns to his eldest son
Tom and wife Brenda.

Some things haven’t changed. We are still a family run farm who enlist the help of friends and neighbours to get the job done.

There are currently three generations of Snyder’s, working together to provide you with some of the sweetest, freshest corn around…
