From a diverse upbringing and a varied career, Sterling understands that creating unique forms requires curious approaches and exploring unconventional paths. Born in Australia and raised in the UK, Sterling is a self-taught multidisciplinary designer and fabricator. His practice currently resides in Vancouver, BC, Canada where his main focus is innovation in lighting design by leveraging the delicate relationship of natural materials with modern precision machinery to create new captivating designs.

This captivating lighting sculpture is a homage to the intricate branching cast iron plumbing pipes found in the basements of old Victorian era houses across North America. Drawing inspiration from these architectural relics, the designer ingeniously translates their cold, regimented form into a mesmerizing sculpture crafted from glass and hardwood lumber. The fabrication process posed unique challenges. Through tireless experimentation and innovation, the designer developed a method that allowed the hardwood to reveal its inherent character. A three-stage finishing sequence was carefully curated, each step enhancing the natural beauty of the wood and inviting the viewer to embark on a tactile journey through the sculpture's three-dimensional landscape. From the smooth, polished surfaces to the rich, earthy hues, every detail invites exploration and contemplation.
