Liver dysfunction presents itself through various signs and symptoms including digestive issues, sensitivity to supplements and medications, fatigue, insomnia, bloating, brain fog, depression, and many more.
If your liver is not functioning as efficiently as it should, it will affect you in ways such as:
☑️ It will not metabolize hormones properly and you may end up with estrogen dominance.
☑️ It will not convert T4 to T3. So, if you are on Thyroid medication which only contains T4, your liver is not able to convert it to T3. Remember, your cells need T3!
☑️ It will not detox properly. We are exposed to so many toxins each day and if your body is not able to detox, it leads to a greater buildup of toxins that might create new symptoms or worsen the symptoms you are already experiencing as a result of Hashimoto’s.
When I work with clients, one of the most important steps is to teach them how to support the body’s detox pathways and reduce the toxic burden. People with Hashimoto’s are more prone to developing a chemical backlog in the body.

💬 It is not common for your conventional doctor to test or even talk about the Hashimoto’s and Hypothyroidism connection (95% of the time Hypothyroidism is due to the autoimmunity called Hashimoto’s). Your doctor will recommend you see an Endocrinologist and sadly, most Endocrinologists also do not educate their clients on Hashimoto’s.
When you do not do anything to manage your antibodies, symptoms such as digestive and skin issues will continue.
Your doctor will then send you to a Gastroenterologist and Dermatologist.
I have spoken to many women who have been working with different specialists but are still not seeing any improvements.
The fact is if you have Hashimoto’s, you need a functional approach to get to the root cause and heal from inside out. Since there is no medication for Hashimoto’s, most of the conventional doctors fail to address this issue.
Take full responsibility for your health 💜 and ask questions.
There is no medication or magic pill for Hashimoto’s but changing your lifestyle and targeting the root cause, you can manage it and start to feel better.

You can invest in buying the best quality organic food but if you do not digest it properly your body will not be able to absorb the nutrients from those foods.
Here are some tips to help / improve your digestion:
☑️ Do not eat while working, surfing the net, or watching TV. Focus on your food and enjoy it!
☑️ Before eating, take a couple of minutes and perform deep breathing exercises. This activates your parasympathetic state which is required for better digestion.
☑️ Chew your food thoroughly.
☑️ Take your time – at least 20 minutes to finish your meal.

🦋 The natural force within each of us is the greatest force in getting well. - Hippocrates
Healing starts from within!
It is from inside out, not the other way round. When you have an autoimmunity, your body is constantly fighting and gets tired so it is very important to help your body by nourishing it and giving it what it needs so that it can repair and heal itself. Your body is the most amazing machine, and when you take care of it by giving it what it needs, it is very quick to respond and start the healing process.
It starts with finding and fixing the root cause, giving it the right nutrients and rest.
Finding the root cause is the important step and you can do it with the help of functional lab tests. For example, in my health journey, I had figured out what food to eat, how to exercise, and how to rest. I followed that for years but didn’t see much improvement until I found functional medicine. When I did my functional lab tests, it was an “aha” moment for me and removing certain triggers helped me recover within months. Three months later my antibodies came down from 470 to 70 and I lost 25 pounds. I have experienced firsthand the difference between conventional and functional approach to healing my autoimmunity.

Most women with Hypothyroidism have some sort of gut microbiome imbalance.
Here are a few signs/symptoms of an unhealthy gut:
☑️ Food sensitivities: Food sensitivity, bloating, diarrhea, constipation, and indigestion.
☑️ Sugar cravings: Sugar and highly processed food decrease good bacteria and increase bad bacteria, which can make you crave sugary foods.
☑️ Inflammation: Unhealthy gut leads to increased inflammation which is the root cause of a lot of chronic diseases including autoimmunity.
☑️ Fatigue and insomnia: Most of your serotonin, dopamine, and melatonin is produced in the gut. A leaky gut may cause your body not to produce enough which can lead to fatigue and insomnia.
☑️ Skin conditions: The imbalance in your gut bacteria can lead to skin conditions like Eczema and acne.
⭐ Remember over 70% of your immune system resides in your gut and healing your gut can be a game changer in healing from an autoimmunity. It sure was for me!
Wellness is the complete integration of body, mind and spirit. The realization that everything we do, think, feel and believe has an effect on our state of well-being.
💬 My TSH levels always come back as normal but I still have symptoms. Why?
This is a very common question that women ask me. They suffer from symptoms like fatigue, weight gain or weight loss, miscarriage/infertility, and mood swings but TSH levels are fine.
👉 Here is why:
Over 90% of the Hypothyroidism is an autoimmune condition called Hashimoto’s, where your immune system is attacking your thyroid gland but did you know it can take up to 10 years for your TSH levels to change?
Since conventional medicine practices only check TSH levels, most women are not able to get an accurate diagnosis for many years.
If you are someone with symptoms, do not wait for your TSH levels to be elevated because by that time your thyroid could have been damaged pretty bad. Ask your doctor to test for thyroid antibodies like thyroglobulin and thyroid peroxidase.
If you do find out that you have these antibodies, do not believe that nothing can be done and just taking thyroid hormones is your only option. Lifestyle changes and the functional approach of correcting the root cause will help you bring your antibodies down.
You need to reduce/stop this immune attack because if you don’t, your imbalanced immune system may find other glands and body tissues to attack and you may develop other autoimmune conditions like Celiac, Lups, Sjogrens and Rheumatoid arthritis.
Working with a functional practitioner was the best decision I took with my autoimmunity as we were able to go to the root cause and correct it, which brought down the antibodies significantly and reduced the symptoms.

💬 I remember days when I was suffering from so many symptoms like digestive issues, brain fog, and fatigue but all I wanted to do is lose weight. I thought that would make all my symptoms go away. I will feel happy and confident again. But is it really true? NO!!
Today when I talk to women with Hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s, I see my old self in them. Most of them will describe their symptoms, how they have no energy to do things they want to do, their sensitivity to foods, acne problems, hair and memory loss. When I ask what their health goals are, they tell me they want to lose a certain number of pounds.
While weight loss is a good goal to have, the focus should be on reducing the attack on your thyroid by your immune system. Once you are healthy, your body will release the extra fat that it is holding on to.

💬 There are so many detox protocols in the market from 5 days to 30 days or more. Are they really effective and safe? In my opinion, they can be potentially harmful to your health and lead to serious consequences as aggressively drawing out toxins can overwhelm the detox pathways that are already overburdened due to Hashimoto’s.
If your detox pathways are overburdened, you first need to work on opening up the pathways by giving your liver the right nutrients and support. Prepare your body first before you start taking supplements or juicing because if your liver is not prepared to get rid of those toxins, they are just going to re-circulate in your body and may attach to other body tissues. This can make you feel sick.
I recommend being gentle on the liver. Support your liver, adrenals, and your gut before you start a detox protocol. If you have any questions I am here to help!

When I was diagnosed with Hashimoto’s:
😣 I was angry and upset. I adopted a victim mentality - why me?
I was so embarrassed with my weight gain that I felt I had to let everyone I meet know that I have Hashimoto’s and that is why I am overweight. Hashimoto’s had become my identity
I felt hopeless and thought I would have to live with this for the rest of my life (like my conventional doctor told me).
I was so worried about my hair loss. I was dealing with anxiety, mood swings, and extreme fatigue.
I had seen so many doctors already and invested a significant amount on supplements but was not feeling better.
I know I am not alone. There are millions of women going suffering with similar symptoms. However, I did not give up. I took full responsibility of my health and kept digging into root causes of my condition and kept looking for the right professional to work with. I spent countless hours researching and finally found my path. It was not an easy journey but definitely an interesting one as I believe I found my passion while on this journey. I went back to school to get my Functional Diagnostic Nutrition certificate so that I can help women with Hypothyroidism / Hashimoto’s who are going through the same issues. I never stop learning.
🙂 If any of this sounds familiar, it is time to take control of your health journey. If you are ready for a change and need a coach who has been on this journey before, book a free functional assessment call today and I would love to connect with you.

The Liver is an important organ and is responsible for:
☑️ Filtering the blood
☑️ Stores glucose for energy
☑️ Produces bile for fat digestion
☑️ Converts T4 to active T3
☑️ Detoxification
It needs proper nutrients and vitamins to do its work.
When the liver is overwhelmed and overburdened, it creates a backlog of toxins. These toxins are then stored in fat cells.
When the liver is backlogged it is not able to convert T4 to active T3 which leads to Hypothyroidism symptoms. T3 is essential for us to feel good, lose weight and have energy.
Since we are exposed to thousands of toxins every single day it is important to support the liver so that it can do its job.
Support your liver by eliminating toxins, inflammatory food and adding appropriate nutrients.

🗨️ One of the most important things you need to do to heal is balance your blood sugar levels.
Blood sugar, also called glucose, enters our bloodstream when we consume carbohydrates. The pancreas then produces insulin, keeping our blood sugar levels in check. Insulin then converts the excess glucose to glycogen and sends it to the liver for storage. When we eat large amount of sugar or carbohydrates, the pancreas have to release larger amounts of insulin to bring the levels of sugar in the blood back down. The higher level of insulin can cause blood sugar levels to drop too low, which will make you crave more carbohydrates or sugar. This starts a cycle all over again, making our blood sugar levels swing high and low, which creates stress for our adrenals. Many people with Hashimoto’s may experience low blood sugar symptoms before they are diagnosed with diabetes or pre-diabetes.
⭐ Important thing to understand is that by changing your diet and lifestyle, you are able to balance your blood sugar. Eat a balanced diet, exercise, sleep well and stay hydrated.

What symptoms of Hypothyroidism or Hashimoto’s are the toughest for you to manage?
For me, it was dealing with:
☑️ Fatigue
☑️ Brain Fog
☑️ Sleep issues
I tried various supplements to get rid of these symptoms but despite improving my diet and taking my supplements, I was not seeing any benefits. 💬 Magnesium is a mineral that is essential for many functions in our body, including heart health, nerve and muscle function, healthy bones, liver health and your immune system. It also supports adrenal functions.
Oftentimes people with Hashimoto’s have a magnesium deficiency.
Some of the symptoms of magnesium deficiency include:
☑️ Irritability or anxiety
☑️ Headaches
☑️ Fatigue
☑️ Restless leg syndrome
☑️ Muscle twitching
I have personally experienced anxiety and restless leg syndrome. If you are experiencing some of these symptoms, ask your doctor to test for it.
Some food high in magnesium include 🥬 green leafy veggies (like spinach and kale), nuts, beans, legumes, and seeds. Alternatively, you can also use magnesium citrate or glycinate supplements.

It is important to get enough quality 💤 sleep each day.
Poor sleep can drive insulin resistance, disrupt your appetite hormones, and reduce your physical and mental performance.
When a flower doesn't bloom, you fix the environment in which it grows, not the flower.
💬 Remember: Taking Thyroid hormones will not lower your antibodies.
When you have elevated Thyroid Peroxidase antibodies it confirms that you have Hashimoto’s. Elevated antibodies mean your immune system is attacking your thyroid gland. Most conventional doctors will not test for these antibodies and will tell you that even if they are elevated, there is nothing you can do about it. Well, that is not true. In my case I was able to bring my antibodies down significantly through lifestyle changes.
Just Synthroid will not lower your antibodies.
Let’s look at what contributes to elevated TPO antibodies:
☑️ Inflammatory foods (gluten, dairy, soy, corn…)
☑️ Leaky Gut
☑️ Toxins
☑️ Mold
☑️ Heavy Metals
☑️ Chronic Stress
☑️ Poor sleep
☑️ Liver congestion
☑️ Gut pathogens/infections
☑️ Epstein Barr Virus
What helps lower these antibodies?
☑️ Eating anti-inflammatory
☑️ Repairing the gut
☑️ Restoring the gut flora
☑️ Sleep
☑️ Detoxification & supporting liver health
☑️ Supporting adrenals
☑️ Restoring nutrients
☑️ Self-care routines
In my signature program, I teach my clients how best to address nutrition, gut health, detoxification, adrenal support and lifestyle changes to reverse Hashimoto's symptoms.

I love 💜 hearing client feedback and success stories!
"Working with Rukhsana has truly been a telling experience. She is unlike any practitioner that I’ve worked with in the past. She really takes her time to listen to you and what your concerns and goals are. She is undoubtedly very passionate about taking a holistic approach to helping her clients heal as she aims to address the root causes of their symptoms, which helps get to the bottom of where their issues originally developed. This is helpful because it leaves no room for anything to be missed and truly helps in the healing process for her clients.
Upon receiving my results, she was also very thorough in explaining what they entailed to provide me a deeper understanding of where my healing could begin. She never hesitates to check in on how my protocol is going which only further reaffirms how passionate and caring she is in seeing her clients improve their health.
I appreciate Rukhsana for all she has done for me and what she continues to still do. For anyone looking to not only work with an incredible practitioner, but a reliable /partner/ when it comes to improving their health—and inevitably their life, she is surely the one to get in touch with." - Amber C.
Sometimes I think what if I had just listened to my doctor and accepted that all I can do for my Hypothyroidism is take synthroid? If I had not decided to take charge of my health, I would have never found out that 95% of the time Hypothyroidism is caused by Hashimoto’s. I would have been taking synthroid and not doing anything for Hashimoto’s.
I meet so many women who tell me that they have been on thyroid meds for years but they don’t see any improvement and continue to see symptoms. You do need thyroid meds, but it does not reduce or stop your immune system from attacking your thyroid. Managing Hashimoto’s helps to reduce the attack and starts to alleviate symptoms!
🦋 I totally believe that your health is your responsibility.
What are you doing for your Hashimoto’s? Comment below.
Stress is one of the root causes of most chronic diseases. Most of us dealing with Hashimoto’s are/or have been under chronic stress.
Stress puts you into a fight or flight state where your body is not focusing on resting, digestion, relaxing and healing.
There are different types of stress like physical, mental/emotional, and chemical/biochemical.
☑️ Physical = fractures, muscle injuries, over-exercise, sleep depletion, and chronic illness.
☑️ Mental/emotional = fear, guilt, excitement, worry, anxiety, grief, depression, trauma, and abuse.
☑️ Chemical/biochemical = parasites, bacteria, fungi, viruses, pesticides, chemical toxins, , inflammatory foods, alcohol and to***co.
I spent many years trying to figure out the triggers for my Hashimoto’s and found out it was a combination of emotional trauma, a parasite (Blasto Hominis), and a virus (Epstein Virus Barr.) My autoimmune attack was reduced only after I was able to reduce these stressors from my mind and body.

😔 I used to step on my scale every single morning and get upset that I didn’t lose any weight.
This one habit would dictate how I showed up in the world that day, impacting everything from my confidence to my mood to my eating habits. I did not like my body.
To no surprise, most of my clients deal with hating their bodies at varying levels. They see their body as the enemy. The thing that’s keeping them from joy, freedom, or love.
But here’s the thing.
🛑 YOU CANNOT HEAL A BODY THAT YOU HATE.
I refuse to treat my body like the enemy anymore. Picking it apart day after day. What a waste of all of the gifts that I have to offer this world.
For me, healing began when I decided to 💙 love, nourish, and care for my body.
When I decided to *listen* to what it was trying to tell me — beneath all the bloating, weight gain, and pain.
When I decided to invest in FEELING good, not just looking good.
So to anyone who checked their weight this morning, like I used to do...
😍 You are beautiful + worthy right now.
Even if you’re inflamed, bloated and carrying some extra weight.

🗨️ I work out a lot but still don’t lose weight?
Adrenals and exercise!
Most of us with Hashimoto’s have difficulty losing weight. I remember working out 5 days a week - a group class each day, followed by 45 minutes on the treadmill. I also tracked and reduced my caloric intake in the hope to lose weight.
The truth is, most of us with Hashimoto’s have adrenal fatigue, which means your body is under stress. By exercising you are adding more stress and as a result your adrenals produce more cortisol. Remember – your body will heal the best when it is not under any stress. Always listen to your body, see how you feel after a workout.
While movement is very beneficial, intense workouts are not recommended when you have adrenal fatigue.
Here are a few suggestions for movement:
☑️ Yoga
☑️ Walks
☑️ Stretching
☑️ Strength Training
Personally I love walking and hiking in nature while listening to a good book or podcast.
What is your favourite exercise? Comment below.
💬 Let's talk about some of the main causes of adrenal fatigue or adrenal dysfunction.
☑️ Inflammation – foods that have gluten, dairy, soy and other ingredients that you're sensitive can create inflammation in your body. Inflammation/stress in your body leads to increasing cortisol production.
☑️ Sleep deprivation – not getting adequate sleep.
☑️ Blood sugar imbalances – one of the root cause and trigger of adrenal dysfunction.
☑️ Nutrient deficiencies – Deficiency in vitamins like C, B5, B1 can lead to adrenal dysfunction.

Adrenal glands are tiny little glands that sit on top of our kidneys and produce various hormones. They also produce Cortisol, which regulates our blood sugar and help to defend us from infections and inflammation. Cortisol is the hormone that helps our body adapt to stress. The important thing to understand is that we need to have a balance.
⬆️ High cortisol levels will lead to belly fat, irritability, and many other symptoms.
⬇️ Low cortisol levels will lead to extreme fatigue.
Many of the symptoms we recognize as ‘low thyroid symptoms’ are actually due to low cortisol. What happens is that when you are stressed out, your adrenals are producing more cortisol. The body wants to produce more cortisol to survive the stressful situation and sometimes will stop producing other hormones.
If you stay in that stressful situation for a long time, the cortisol production goes down and you experience extreme fatigue. Low cortisol also means more inflammation, more pain and low Secretory IgA which protects our gut lining.
📌 Supporting adrenals is extremely important in healing Hashimoto’s.
