EASY ON-THE-GO CHICKEN VEGGIE SALAD!! 🥗

Ingredients: 2 chicken breasts, 1 head of lettuce, balsamic vinegar, olive oil, chicken seasoning, assortment of veggies!

Steps:
1. Wash vegetables and lettuce
2. Chop up preferred vegetables (always good to have a colourful rainbow of veggies!) and place aside
3. Slice up chicken breasts and add preferred seasoning (Chicka Licka Bam Bam is great for some extra heat!)
4. Pan cook the chicken in a little olive oil on medium heat
5. Chop lettuce and add it to a bowl with the veggies 🥕
6. Mix olive oil and balsamic vinegar for an easy dressing
7. Add cooked chicken to the bowl
8. Pour dressing in the bowl and mix!
9. Enjoy!! 🥗

Did you know there are 7 reflexes an infant uses for feeding?

1. Rooting Reflex - helps infant locate the breast or bottle
2. Suck Reflex - Suckling is the front to back movement that seals and unseals the back 1/3 of the tongue.
3. Tongue Reflex - The front-to-back wavelike movement that helps the baby suckle and allows for cupping of the tongue around the ni**le (breast or bottle)
4. Suck/Swallow Reflex - continues as an essential reflex for life.
5. Physic Bite Reflex - When pressure is put on the baby’s gums they will open and close their jaw to “bite” up and down.
6. Lateral Tongue Reflex - Infant will move their tongue side to side
7. Gag Reflex - This reflex begins at the front of the tongue and shifts backwards to the back 1/4 of the tongue with experiences in their mouth.

All of these reflexes will typically integrate or “disappear” within the first 6-18 months of age.

What could impact the development of these skills?

👀Tension
👀Low/High Tone
👀Pediatric TMJD
👀Tongue Tie
👀Poor Oral Function
👀Developmental Delay
👀Torticollis
👀Lack of Use (NICU, G-tube)

🧠If an infant has anything interfering with the proper expression of these reflexes they will create compensation patterns.

🧠If these feeding reflexes integrate or mature before we master the movement(s) it can be very challenging to the feeding process, Vagal tone and even our posture.

Check out this study that found “significant improvement in the isokinetic knee performance with the tongue in the UP position compared to the tests with the MID and LOW positions. The improvement occurred at both low (90°/s) and high speeds (180°/s), i.e., during both endurance and high-force muscular exercise, respectively.”

When our tongue is not functioning properly it acts as a major physical stressor to our structure and our brain development creating interference (what Chiropractors call Subluxations) between our body and brain and brain and body. This may present in many ways and can be addressed even in our newborns — honestly the sooner the better. Identifying and correcting the CAUSE of our dysregulation and dysfunction will help shift from compensation patterns to optimal FUNCTION patterns. This is critical as it impacts every part of our development, brain 🧠- body connection, emotional and nervous system regulation and so much more.

Ever wonder WHAT is the issue when it comes to your little one or your littlest practice member?

So often we look for the ONE cause that we miss how interconnected their function is. Babies are made to survive and they will work very hard to find a way to eat, sleep, move and communicate. When we have stressors like tension, subluxation, retained primitive reflexes, structural imbalances and developmental challenges we will see compensation patterns present. The more they use these less efficient, survival driven compensation patterns the stronger they become and the more additional compensation patterns we will begin to see.

Alignment, Function, Behaviour, Feeding, Sensory Processing, Emotions are all linked together and FEED off one another creating the “Neural Storm”. Often we don’t begin to deal with them until that tornado touches down and that makes it so much more challenging.

It is never too early to have your infant assessed and you can even get assessed and begin care while pregnant to help your alignment, nervous system and Vagal tone which all has an impact on your growing baby!

Let’s elevate the level of care and focus on improving FUNCTION from the beginning for these little ones!
