On Tuesday, September 10th, we celebrated our annual Empty Bowls Fundraiser!

Guests enjoyed the beautiful art at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery, and tasted delicious dishes and drinks โ€“ all in support of the fight against hunger in Durham Region.

Last weekend, we joined Sobeys and DRPS for their annual Cram-a-Cruiser event in support of FTND!

Staff, officers and volunteers collected food donation bags at 3 Sobeys locations; Sobeys South Ajax (667), Sobeys Whitby (851), and Sobeys Oshawa (925)! Thanks to their hard work and the kind shoppers who donated, we collected an incredible 2,628 lbs. of food for our community, providing nearly 2,200 meals for the community!

Yesterday, we welcomed a team from General Motors Canada for a volunteer experience at the FTND warehouse! We discussed the rising levels of food insecurity in many communities, and sorted food donations for our on-site food bank, The Market.

On September 5th, representatives from municipalities across Durham Region joined FTND and The Region for a Proclamation of Hunger Action Month & Flag Raising to raise awareness for the need in our community. Representatives also joined FTND for a food sorting experience at the FTND warehouse, sorting non-perishable items for donation to those in need.

We appreciate the support of our partners across Durham Region for their support each Hunger Action Month, helping us raise awareness, food donations, and funds to fight hunger in our communities as food insecurity continues to impact individuals, seniors, and families throughout the Region.

From September 5 to 27, there will be more drop-off locations than ever located throughout Durham, making it even easier for residents, businesses and community groups to donate non-perishable food items. Visit your local municipality online to find a drop-off location near you:

Today, D.I.S. Financial Group and Intact Insurance came by FTND for a cheque presentation in recognition of their generous donation of $8,000, equivalent to 16,000 meals for our neighbours across Durham Region facing food insecurity.

One of the visitors was Kris Barber from D.I.S. Financial Group, an incredible volunteer who has been with FTND for over a decade, and plays a vital role in our organization! Support from our community members, through donations and volunteering, makes our mission possible.

FTND would like to express our deep gratitude to the teams at Impact Insurance and D.I.S. Financial Group for this generous gift: impactful gifts like this support our efforts to continue to provide our community with nutritious meals.

Together, we will build a future where no one in Durham Region goes hungry.

On August 22, Newton-Trelawney Property Management (NTPM) hosted their 1st Annual Charity Golf Tournament, in support of FTND!

Over 140 golfers from 36 companies attended the tournament at Deer Creek Golf Club, and enjoyed golfing the beautiful course while supporting our community! Thanks to the efforts of the amazing team at NTPM, the tournament raised $15,000 and over 1,500 pounds of food for FTND! This incredible donation makes a huge impact on our community, and helps us continue to nourish our neighbours facing food insecurity.

Last month, Domino's locations in Whitby, Oshawa and Bowmanville held a food drive for FTND, offering customers a FREE pizza with the donation of 2 non-perishable items! This amazing opportunity raised an incredible 456 pounds. of food, equal to 380 meals!

Today, Feed the Need in Durham welcomed Chicken Farmers of Ontario and CFO Cares to our Oshawa location to celebrate their incredible donation of 700 kg. of chicken, equivalent to 6,000 meals!

Joined by Oshawa Mayor Dan Carter, Oshawa MPP Jennifer French, Shanade Thomas from Feed Ontario, and Tim Klompmaker from Chicken Farmers of Ontario, we discussed the growing need across Ontario and the huge impact this donation will make on those facing hunger in our communities. The team also toured our warehouse and learned about The Market Food Bank, and how we provide a dignity-first experience to visitors.

Thank you to CFO Cares and Chicken Farmers of Ontario for this impactful gift, and for all the work they do through their Farmers to Foodbanks initiative โ€“ as hunger rises, this donation will significantly support us in our efforts to meet the growing need for fresh, nutritious food in our communities. ๐Ÿ“๐ŸŒฑ

On Saturday, August 10th, Feed the Need in Durham attended the GM Fun Fair, organized by GM Oshawa Assembly Plant!

Their team organized a fundraising raffle for attendees, which raised an amazing 2,178 pounds of food, in addition to their generous donation of over $23,500 to Feed the Need in Durham; providing over 48,000 meals to our community members facing food insecurity!

Yesterday, we had the pleasure of attending the Deer Creek Cares Charity Golf Tournament, in support of FTND and Grandview Kids Foundation! We enjoyed a great day of golf on the beautiful course, and held a fundraising raffle!

As well, we were graciously presented with a donation of $15,050 from Deer Creek Cares โ€“ this generous donation will allow us to provide over 30,000 meals for our neighbours in need, at a time when the need continues to increase in our community.

Today, Honda Canada Foundation visited the FTND warehouse for a volunteer experience, and to celebrate their generous contribution to our participation in the After The Bell program!

After the Bell is an initiative by to address child hunger over the summer months when school meal programs are closed. In support of this mission, Honda Canada Foundation donated an incredible $15,400, and donated additional 100 lbs. of food! This amazing contribution will allow us to provide over 396 CSA boxes to 33 families in the Durham Region!

Our Story - Responding to Hunger

Feed the Need in Durham is a non-profit, charitable organization that is fighting to alleviate hunger right here in Durham Region. Each month we make a real difference in the lives of over 6,000 people (38% are children), who rely on food banks, soup kitchens and food programs to get the food and non-food items necessary to sustain life. Feed the Need in Durham serves the majority of these people through our member agencies (food banks, meal programs, shelters, etc) located across the Durham Region. We believe that the right to food is the right to life. If you would like to join us in our fight to alleviate hunger in your community, consider donating food, making a monetary donation, or volunteering your time.
