Sophie Goyette-Hamels (she/her) is the director and choreographer for Polygraph. A dynamic mover and creator from Ottawa, she is passionate about devised and collaborative creation processes. She graduated from York Universityโs dance program and went on exchange to the University of Chichester, in England for a year. Sophie has created a number of works, including Nuit and CTRL, both performed at the Youth Infringement Festival, and is excited that Polygraph will have its world premiere at Ottawa Fringe.
As someone who loves working on devised projects, my big inspiration for this show was to try out a new process with the team! After giving Harley some parameters for the text and having a long conversation with them about the things they were interested in at the time, I gave them full artistic freedom to create up to 20 pages of a script. We then took that incredible script (thank you !) and started ripping it apart, putting it back together, adding more text and movement, and finally we have the end result. As always this is a first draft, but Iโm really proud of the whole team for what we were able to make!

Tamara Laplante (she/her) is an Ottawa-based, GTA-born stage manager. Once upon a time she tried on all the hats of theatre and found that stage managing fits her best. Tamara made a return to the arts during the Covid-19 pandemic in search of community and creativity. She has stage managed at the Youth Infringement festival, Ottawa Fringe, Guelph Fringe and undercurrents festival. Tamara is excited to bring Nuit to new cities and hopes the audiences feel as much joy as she does while working on this show. Her favourite night to get dressed up and go out is always New Yearโs Eve.

Sarah Ivanco (she/they) is a producer, performer, and creator for Polygraph. In her artistic practice they have a large focus on theatre, dance, and visual arts. Her personal artistic mandate is about building a supportive community through collective creation and vulnerability. Sarah is also the co-artistic director and founder of the Lighter Touch Art Collective and the curator and editor of Zine R.A.C.K.
Polygraph is a project that is very close to my heart. In Canada alone, two-thirds of people know a woman who has faced emotional, physical, or sexual abuse. As a femme-presenting individual I am no stranger to misogynistic behaviour and the abuse that men are capable of. Polygraph may be about violence and misogyny in the music and film industry but it is just as important in our own day to day lives. We need to continue to stand against the heteropatriarchy and believe, support, and show kindness to the women in our lives.

Glenys Marshall (she/her) is a performer and creator for Nuit. She is a comedian based in Ottawa, where she co-produces and stars in Small Fish, a variety show that spotlights marginalized performers in her city. A graduate from Humberโs Comedy Writing and Performance program, sheโs explored many mirth-y mediums, including sketch (The Second City Conservatory), clown (Salford University) and improv (anywhere and everywhere). She works with the Canadian Improv Games as a referee, judge, and head trainer in her region. After bringing Nuit to Montreal and Winnipeg this summer, sheโll be releasing her first full length musical comedy album, Glenys. Her ideal clubbing playlist would consist of yacht rock, kpop, and sped-up Chappel Roan!

Harley Wegner (they/them) is a Mรฉtis Two-Spirit artist, creating on unceded and unsurrendered Algonquin Anishinaabe territory. Mainly working in theatre, their artistic career has spanned the last 6 years through acting, writing, directing, designing lights, producing and curating. They are pretty much constantly working on a project. They are beyond excited to make waves in the arts scene with Faerie Goblin Productions as a producer and emerging curator. Harley seeks to make projects that embrace Wahkohtowin while exploring q***r and trans eroticism, leftist politics, the avant-garde, silliness, seriousness, camp, intimacy, and all things strange!
I wrote the text for Polygraph because the conversation on violent misogyny is ongoing and will continue to be ongoing until we end the abuse of women and girls. The Me Too Movement opened conversation about the rampant abuse of women and children in Hollywood, but eventually the conversations stopped, life carried on as normal, and now Harvey Weinstein has had charges against him dropped halving his prison sentence. Abuse does not stop because we stop talking about it. I wrote Polygraph because I am a feminist dedicated to toppling heteropatriarchy, and conversations like the ones had in this show are a small step forward.

Meghan Burns (she/they) is a performer for Nuit this season. They toured Ottawa, Winnipeg and Edmonton Fringe festivals last year with the show โAlways Because: The Adventures of Maggie and Meghanโ, co-produced, performed and directed with her partner Maggie May Harder. They also perform as drag king Morgan Mercury, recently competing on Ottawaโs Next Drag Superstar, as well as leading q***r history walking tours of Ottawa in drag. She is looking forward to performing in Montreal for the first time and returning to Winnipeg Fringe, this time with a whole group of creators that inspire her! They always carry an extra juice box and granola bar to the club to stay hydrated and energized on the dance floor (plus itโs a foolproof move to offer a juice box to cuties).

Polygraph touches on some heavy, but necessary themes about abuse, the abuse of power, and how our overarching systems work against women. For most of her life, Tamara has worked in male-dominated fields, and she is rather familiar with the double-standards that exist across industries. Her experiences have helped guide her discoveries on this project and she hopes that shows like Polygraph can help support the change that is needed to a future that is fair and just.

Mirana Rambelo (she/they) is shimmering with glee to be a performer in Nuit, her first Fringe show ever! You may have seen her recently in Dreamgirls โMichelleโ (Orpheus Musical Theatre) or just a lilโ whiles back in Mamma Mia! โRosieโ (Canterbury High School). Offstage, they like singing olโ wistful jazz tunes and dancinโ and shimmy-shimmying to salsa, bachata, and afro-cuban. They are also dabbling in choreographing, trying to bring vintage moves to modern stages. All in all, Mirana hopes to dedicate her life to making imaginative and expansive art that makes people feel deeply and get a sense of renewed inspiration. Thatโs why, in their purse, they always carry extra tissues and an asthma inhaler!

He believes Polygraph continues to shine a light on how our societyโs patriarchal systems are used by people with power and influence to perpetrate various patterns of abusive behaviour against women. These same systems are then often used to shield abusers and invalidate victims. He hopes Polygraph is a reminder to everyone to believe women and understand that there is still personal, communal , and cultural work to be done to create a safe and uplifting space for women.
