🌺Lest We Forget🌺
An Unknown Soldier has been returned to Newfoundland and Labrador, a soldier of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment... of the British Army. As Newfound prepares to mark Memorial Day 1st July.
A significant event which will take place on July 1. The date marks Memorial Day in Newfoundland and Labrador and 100 years of the Newfoundland National War Memorial in downtown St. John's.
On July 1, 1916 — the opening day of the Battle of the Somme — most of the Newfoundland Regiment was killed or wounded at Beaumont-Hamel. The day has been recognized since as a solemn day, even after Newfoundland joined Canada in 1949 and began to celebrate Canada Day on the same date.
Preparations have been underway to refurbish the site ahead of the milestone and will be the final resting place for the unknown soldier, inside a newly constructed tomb.
"It'll be another historic moment. I encourage every Newfoundlander and Labradorian, if they can, to come to celebrate this young man and all the young men that we're leaving behind," said Furey.
"I think July 1 will be powerful and I encourage everyone to participate and reflect on what it means for the sacrifice these young men made."
The soldier will lie in state at Confederation Building from June 28 to June 30, allowing members of the public to visit the casket.

I read this history on another City of Ottawa page. It explains the Booth and Bell Street area of Ottawa now, but it once was part of Nepean Township and known as an area called “Orangeville”.
The first few paragraphs explain about the area north of Dows Lake as a working class neighbourhood of which was predominantly made up of Protestant Orange families who were living there.
Bell Orange Lodge # 1312 was probably formed on Bell Street in that “Orangeville”area of the city of Ottawa in May 1876 and survived over 100 years, before surrendering their warrant.
The swampy area of the map is some of the area where they grow the tulips each spring along Dows Lake south of Carling Avenue.
Sorry about the various pictures and some of the carry over, as I couldn’t share this article. “Bell Street “ today is where it shows Lisgar Street on the old map.
Orange Brothers and Friends gathered for a Flag dedication and raising ceremony in the heart of the Nations Capital, Ottawa, Ontario on the occasion of the 157th Canada/Dominion Day at the Rosemount Orange Hall. All enjoyed a BBQ and fellowship after.
We were also lucky to enjoy the fly past of the various military aircraft that flew overhead the city during the Canada Day festivities, which was being held only blocks away from our hall.
We also paid respect and remembered the thousands of soldiers that paid the supreme sacrifice in battle so that we could enjoy the freedoms we have today.
We also took a moment to remembered three key people who were all “ Orange Brothers” and all had an important connection and contributions in uniting and developing this country, giving us a national song and remembering our fallen heroes in battle and giving us an identity in this great country.
Brother’s Sir John A MacDonald Canada’s first Prime Minister in 1867, John McCrae author of “ In Flanders Fields “ and Alexander Muir author of “ The Maple Leaf Forever “. All were proud Canadian Orangemen and all should be honoured, respected and remembered.
We invite members and friends to the Rosemount Orange Hall tomorrow July 1 Canada Day/ Dominion Day to join us for a flag raising ceremony. Begin at 11 AM , ceremony at noon. Fellowship after.
Happy Father’s Day to all the Great Dad’s out there.
