Falcon has Landed 🦅

Context: 2024 has been one of the busiest seasons yet I’ve been the quietest. Those two can often be correlated but rarely when you’re a “YouTuber”. It’s quite explainable though, September has been requiring a lot of our time this year, a lot of it, and we’ve given it our time in pursuit of our vision for what we want September to be. It has borrowed time away from the camera and ultimately, content! We promised to bring you along in the journey from the start. So, here’s what’s up…

Recently we have made the decision to upgrade our roaster earlier than originally planned. We purchased and have been roasting on Loring’s smallest S7 Nighthawk since last year. It’s a powerful and capable little roaster, but if truth be told it’s not the most efficient roaster when volume is needed. It was never intended to be. And didn’t project a need for anything more based on our model.

We sold our Loring S7 this month. It’s still here at HQ and will be for a bit longer as we transition.

So this is our new S15 Falcon Loring. With over double the capacity of our previous roaster but with the same roasting platform, this will dramatically help our efficiency and allow us to not only continue to roast what we love to those we love but do it in half the time. While many suggested that we go all in and get a 35kg… we are still a micro roaster with a priority on a wide selection of high scoring light, sweet & bright treats. We think the 15kg is the perfect sweet spot (for us). Fun fact, we bought this Loring from our good friends at who were conveniently selling a new one at the same time we started considering it. Thanks Wes and team.

We’ve also brought on a few new team members at September HQ. More on that another time.

I plan to share all of this and more in depth in an upcoming YouTube video including a brief review on my experience with the S7 Nighthawk Loring, what I learnt, and if I’d recommend it to other roasters. I’ll go deep on pros and cons and personal thoughts with it and the company.

HOST DAY 1

Better late than never. First day was landing in Milan and frantically catching up on the few days that have already passed.

Got to finally meet up with , and I’ve appreciated our friendship over the years. Watching him start a YouTube and fly by me in subscribers has honestly been incredibly special to watch. Few understand the YouTube space as a creator and it was great to chat and laugh over pizza about the wild nature of YouTube and coffee.

I’ll be hanging out with today for a couple hours and walking around the expo, come say hi!

I finished filming and editing part one of two videos featuring this new grinder. This will be my first impressions and overview of the new Option-O Lagom 01.

This is a grinder with an xl 102mm blind burr set. A true “endgame” grinder they claim to have improved workflow nit-picks of the P100.

Keep your eyes out on the channel, as it should be dropping this week.

I had the distinct pleasure of hosting , the World Barista Champion, to film a YouTube video today.

He took some time out of his busy schedule to visit .coffee.co and to film a tips video for home baristas. I think it’s a must watch.

Boram is as kind a person as he is a great competitor. A truly great world ambassador for specialty coffee.

Update // July 2023

Hey friend, wherever you are I hope you’re well today.

These past 8 months have been abnormal for me and I thought it was time I posted an update.

September Coffee Company was founded by Natasha and I last year and launched with a Kickstarter with your incredible support. It was unfathomable and we’re still in shock.

Fast forward to late July of 2023 and we’re about to hit 6 months of September being open. In the last 8 months we’ve had the privilege of shipping thousands of umbrella stamped packages, partner with and fill the hoppers of some of our favourite cafes, launched a fantastic subscription service, worked with our favourite producers, leased a home for September, purchased and received a roaster, launched a second YouTube channel, and more recently begun building an espresso bar at HQ. All while continually making YouTube videos along the way 📹

All of this is only possible because of you. And thus the reason I am making this post, to express my gratitude.

Starting a roastery is no small feat. It takes a massive amount of money, time, effort and passion. We’ve been blown away by the your love and support but we’ve got a long way to go… with lots in store and with one of our more expensive months ahead of us with the final steps of installing our loring and all that entails (so if you’ve been holding off, now would mean more than you know if you grabbed a bag, placed an order or even simply recommending us to a friend 🙏)

Last week we took this photo at September HQ after a long day of packing. We had the biggest smiles on our faces as we recognized what we’ve created, the coffees we had just shipped and the tasty experiences so many of you have had.

And most notably the farmers and producers we’ve been able to support in the journey.

Just wild. Yet so much in store.

Here’s to the next 6 months - and beyond. Let’s do this 🥂☂️

Who doesn’t love a grinder showdown?! I just posted a video featuring these grinders and 10 different burr sets:

Zerno Z1, Sculptor 078s, 078, Niche Duo, DF83 v1, DF83 v2, and lots of burrs from Mazzer, Italmill, SSP, Timemore and new DLC coated burrs.

This is a video that took many hours to create with weeks of blind tastings and comparative testing. Would truly appreciate if you gave it a watch over on YouTube, and all that jazz. And let me know which sparks your interest.

ZERNO Z1 ⚙️

I’ve had the privilege of testing this coffee grinder from .grinder for the past while.

It’s boasts a 64mm Flat burr platform and mine is fitted with Multi-Purpose burrs.

I have used, owned and reviewed dozens of grinders over the years but few have stood out with impeccable build quality like the Zerno. Not to say that it doesn’t have flaws… but the care in its design is very evident.

The team at zerno have called multiple times to ask my feedback to how they can continue to improve this grinder. To me, this reception to feedback is what makes the Zerno a very good grinder.

I’ll save my full thoughts for a review that you should expect in the next month or so (once I receive the V2) I’ll be comparing this V1 grinder to the Niche Duo, Timemore 078/078s and DF83 in my next video.

I just dropped a video on YouTube about how I’m currently roasting coffee, and the exciting arrival and unboxing of our new roaster.

I also share why we went with over other brands. I personally feel it’s an interesting topic.

I love these types of vlogs. And while these videos tend to do well, they’re not nearly as well appreciated by the algo as a review or product comparison. And we’re at the mercy of the Algorithm. We just received this massive crate and for those who’ve been following along you likely know what this is, but for those who don’t well let me explain…

This is our brand new coffee roaster from .

It’s a beautiful state of the art roaster that is going to allow September to make the next step in growth and further increased quality.

This is a big deal for us. And you can probably tell by this photo, we’re full of joy.

We’ll show you what’s inside soon, and it will be another month before it’s operational due to inspections and commissioning if all goes as planned ( we’re very excited to have you in Ottawa), but we plan to bring you all along in the journey. 📹

Niche Duo.

I just finished filming and editing my Niche Duo review. I’ve been excited to release this as the niche has been a staple on my bar over the years. But I have a love hate relationship with it. Cue the duo… and is it legendary or late?

In this review I go in depth on flavour profiles for both burrs, how it compares to the DF83 and the many pros and cons of this grinder. Including talk on its NEW price. Yeah, it caught me off guard too. I filmed this review twice because of it. 😅

I’ve owned this Kaliedo M10 Roaster for eight months and maybe you’ve noticed it sitting in the backdrop to all my videos for quite some time?

Well it’s about time I drop a video on it as this is the most interesting home roaster you’ve never heard of. And trust me, you’ll want to tune in. I just finished filming it today.

Hi friends! Many of you have been asking me thoughts on the Timemore Sculptor 064s // 078s in light of their massive Kickstarter campaign. I’ve been working extra late nights to solidify a review covering everything I can about these two… but I want to know what questions you may have?

I’ve had these two grinders for the past week and have spent more hours than I’d like to admit grinding coffee on these coffee grinders from the popular Chinese coffee gear manufacturer.

You may ask what makes these so special? Why are so many people interested?

On paper they have a lot to offer: patented flat burrs in two burr options and sizes (turbo burrs for filter, standard flat burrs for both espresso & filter) design for both espresso and filter. Variable RPM. Stepped and step-less grind adjustment models, and probably most intriguing: a price highly competitive with everything in the industry. (At least at their Kickstarter price).

Timemore asked earlier this year if I was interested in testing and possibly sharing my honest thoughts with the community. As you friends know, I only do these videos if I’m able to share without bias. Which they agreed. I hoped to receive them before the Kickstarter, but a las this will have to do.

So expect my review very soon, but as I finalize my thoughts please let me know what you’d like answered below!

As many of you know I’ve been working much of this year to launch September Coffee Co. Yesterday we launched our store, and the response was nothing short of extraordinary and something needs to be said:

Now let me say a few things before you keep scrolling…

Starting a business is tough, any owner will agree. And with September we were (and currently are) putting everything on the line.

The journey of starting this company has been fulfilling, rewarding, and empowering but also, like any business owner knows, exhausting.

But there’s something special about witnessing the tangible outcome of your work. The comments, compliments, excitement and ultimately, support.

While some of our stock sold out in the first few hours yesterday, we do have a few offerings on the store still available until they’re not. I’d recommend all but especially Pink Lemonade (if you are a fan of bright sparkling pink bourbon like us ✨).

And while the journey is far from over… in fact it’s quite the opposite… I needed to pause today to thank you. The supporters, kickstarters, fans, customers, friends… what ever you’d classify yourself to be,

This just came in the mail… a milestone only possible because of you. Truthfully if you told me a few years ago that 100k people who love coffee as much as I do would want to subscribe to a geek like me, I’d honestly laugh. But here we are, and here is a plaque from to celebrate it. Wild.

So thank you! 100k is simply a number but it reminds me of how great this community is.

So onward and… upward? Haha. Not quite sure. All I know is that I’m excited for the content in the works… and excited to continue meeting many of you in the journey.

We Did It 🥹

As many of you know Natasha and I have started a coffee roasting company .coffee.co and launched it on Kickstarter a month ago for initial pre-orders and limited merchandise.

Well with 36 hours remaining in the Kickstarter campaign I’m overjoyed to share we not only hit our initial goal but our reach goal an hour before new years to allow us to occupy our new (to us) facility. 🎉

I’ve talked about them many times before but as I wrap up 2022 I wanted to appreciate the art that is produced by the team at Standart. And the fact that they’re now covering the cost of the first issue so you can try it for free… I think it’s worth recommending.

This interesting looking device is a 1kg electric coffee roaster. It’s a very capable little roaster for the home or other specific uses.

I just dropped an in-depth review on YouTube covering the bullets tech, it’s design and two important topics very few are talking about relating to the bullet. One good, and one you need to be aware of before purchasing.
