To Connect With Your Audience, Be Vulnerable
When I am delivering my On-Target Presentations workshops, I ask my clients what the objectives of their speech or presentation are. Invariably, they say they want to make people "aware" of something or to "educate" them.
However, awareness and education are but means to an end. When I probe, they say they want people to know something.
For me, those who seek only to build awareness or knowledge are setting the bar way too low. What they should be aiming for is behavioural change.
Behaviour change is easy to measure whereas knowledge and awareness not so much.
How then can you best persuade people to do what you want?

I read the news today, oh boy.
Is it time for mainstream media outlets to get back to reporting the real news instead of all this opinion and infotainment? Since the 2016 U.S. election campaign, it’s understandable that Americans’ trust in news sources has shifted. All of the “fake” news (aka propaganda) has been dutifully (and often uncritically) reported by mainstream media outlets. Some news outlets have even resorted to “fact-checking” presidential pronouncements. [ 775 more words ]

After the crisis has passed: What now?
Once you emerge from that long, dark tunnel known as a crisis and things have returned to the ‘new’ normal, there’s a temptation to leave well enough alone and move on. The problem with that approach is that not everyone may agree that the crisis is actually over. In fact, unless you demonstrate that you have successfully dealt with all of the elements that triggered the crisis in the first place, the siege mentality that often accompanies a crisis may eat away at your reputation. The Three C’s of Crisis Communication: Corporate leadership, Company values and Crisis training
As a communications consultant and trainer, it has been my fortune to work with both good leaders and bad. I have learned a lot from both. From the good leaders, I have learned how shared values can propel an organization to greater and greater success. How preparing for the unexpected can pay handsome dividends. From bad leaders, I have learned how not to manage people and how poor company values expose you and your organization to significant risk, exponentially increasing your chances of failure – and unemployment.
