We are excited to be welcoming two new members to the CHBA uOttawa team!

Mariana Llanos (she/her) is a second-year student in the American/Canadian Common Law J.D. program at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. Mariana is a first-generation Canadian, with one parent from Brazil and one from Peru. Born and raised in the Pacific Northwest, Mariana is always looking for an excuse to get outside. This past summer, she interned at a legal aid clinic in her hometown of Bellingham, Washington, working primarily with individuals in her community experiencing homelessness. Leonardo Camacho (he/him) is a second-year law student in the Programme de droit canadien (LL.L./J.D.) at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. Having grown up with a Venezuelan heritage he loves listening to salsa music. Leonardo enjoys reading about philosophy, watching rugby, and trying to cook.
After spending the summer at a human rights boutique firm in Toronto, Leonardo joined the Ship-source Pollution Fund for the last few months as a student intern to research Part 7 of the Marine Liability Act. He is now assisting different professors in their research projects at the University of Ottawa in the fields of contract theory and marine liability. Mariana Llanos (elle/elle) est une étudiante de deuxième année du programme de double grade J.D. canadien et américain à la Faculté de droit de l'Université d'Ottawa. Mariana est une Canadienne de première génération, avec un parent originaire du Brésil et un autre du Pérou. Née et ayant grandi dans le nord-ouest du Pacifique, Mariana cherche toujours une excuse pour aller dehors. L'été dernier, elle a fait un stage dans une clinique d'aide juridique de sa ville natale de Bellingham, dans l'État de Washington, où elle a travaillé principalement avec des personnes de sa communauté sans abri. Leonardo Camacho (il/lui) est un étudiant en deuxième année du Programme de droit canadien (LL.L./J.D.) à la Faculté de droit de l'Université d'Ottawa. Ayant grandi avec un héritage vénézuélien, il adore écouter de la musique salsa. Leonardo aime lire sur la philosophie, regarder le rugby et essayer de cuisiner.
Après avoir passé l'été dans un cabinet spécialisé dans les droits de la personne à Toronto, Leonardo a rejoint la Caisse d'indemnisation des dommages dus à la pollution par les hydrocarbures causée par les navires au cours des derniers mois en tant qu'étudiant stagiaire chargé de faire des recherches sur la partie 7 de la Loi sur la responsabilité en matière maritime. Il assiste maintenant différents professeurs dans leurs projets de recherche à l'Université d'Ottawa dans les domaines de la théorie des contrats et de la responsabilité maritime. Carla-Maria Estrada (she/her/elle) is a first-year student in the English Common Law J.D. program at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. Carla-Maria is a first-generation Salvadoran-Canadian. She is fluent in Spanish and cannot live without her grandma's pupusas. When she has free time, Carla-Maria loves to read fiction and practice yoga. Prior to law school, Carla-Maria worked as an eCommerce Assistant for Ubisoft Canada. She is excited to be embarking on a new career path. Carolina Maass (she/her/elle) is a second-year student in the French Common Law J.D. program at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. She was born in Mexico, is fluent in Spanish and loves mole. Julia is currently working at the Supreme Court of Canada and is also a Student Caseworker in the Family Division of the University of Ottawa Community Legal Clinic. We are happy to introduce the 2021-2022 CHBA uOttawa Team.

Natasha Dood-Persaud (she/her) is a third-year student in the English Common Law J.D. program at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. Born and raised in Venezuela, she is fluent in Spanish and eating arepas. Natasha enjoys camping and enjoys singing in acapella groups. Jean-Claude Velasquez (he/him) is a second-year law student in the English Common Law J.D. program at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. A newcomer to Canada from New York City, he is fluent in Spanish and loves ceviche. Jean-Claude enjoys traveling and has backpacked across South America. He spent the past summer at The MITRE Corporation in Washington D.C. advising the offices of general counsel of several U.S. federal agencies on issues related to national security, consumer protection, and healthcare. Maria Gonzalez (she/her) is a third-year student in the English Common Law J.D. program at the University of Ottawa, Faculty of Law. Maria was born in Uruguay, is fluent in Spanish and cannot go one week without having asado. In her free time, she loves to collect interior design ideas and watch basketball. Maria spent the past two summers at a full-service firm on Bay Street in Toronto and will be completing her articles with the Ontario Ministry of the Attorney General, Crown Law Office - Criminal Division. We are proud to announce the official launch of CHBA uOttawa.

CHBA uOttawa is a partnership with the Canadian Hispanic Bar Association that will work to provide mentorship to Hispanic, Latin American and Latinx-Identifying law students. It will also aim to create a national outreach program which connects Hispanic, Latin American and Latinx-Identifying law students and legal professionals across Canada.

A big thank you to the entire Canadian Hispanic Bar Association - CHBA Board for your help spearheading this important initiative!
