Surveys from Statistics Canada show that workforce participation for Canadians with disabilities has increased. That's good news! Workplace accommodations can be big or small but always help workers to reach their full potential on the job.
Wishing you all a happy Thanksgiving with much to be grateful for. We are closed on Monday, October 14th, and will reopen Tuesday 8:30-4:00.
October is National Disability Employment Awareness Month. According to Statistics Canada, more than one-third of employed Canadians with disabilities need a workplace accommodation or had an unmet need. That's an improvement over previous years but still shows the need for continued work towards full inclusion in the workplace.
While Causeway is closed today, we would like to honour the work of our partner agencies who serve First Nations, Inuit and Metis community members. Great respect for The Wabano Centre for Aboriginal Health, Minwaashin Lodge Programs, The Odawa Native Friendship Centre, Tungasuvvingat Inuit and so many others, for their advocacy, their teaching, and their committed front-line work.
Love to do good by doing good work? Join the Causeway team today as we grow.

Causeway welcomed a visit from the National Council of Social Service NCSS Singapore this week. Deputy Executive Chief Executive Yoganathan Ammayappan brought his team to hear about Causeway's employment programs, with a special interest in youth and social enterprise. It's energizing to be reminded that so many smart, engaged people around the world are working towards inclusive and equitable employment for all.
Are you friendly? Can you answer the telephone? Are you free on Fridays?
Causeway is looking for a volunteer to be the friendly face at our reception desk. Our front desk support person will direct visitors to appropriate programs, take messages, transfer phone calls--but most importantly, they will welcome those who walk through our front door!
If this sounds like a rewarding way to spend your Fridays 8:30-4, find more info here:https://www.causewayworkcentre.org/wp-content/uploads/2023/06/Volunteer-Front-Desk-1.pdf
Today is International Literacy Day. Literacy empowers people by opening doors to opportunities for full inclusion in community. A lack of adequate literacy can be an invisible barrier to employment that limits one's enjoyment of communication and learning.
But there are so many resources to help!
Talk to our Intake workers if you feel your level of literacy limits your employment potential. We can make connections to start you on your way to success!
Does September feel like a fresh start to you? If you're thinking of exploring new work opportunities, Causeway's Employment Resource Centre can be a good place to start.
☑️ Access to computers, phone, fax, photocopying/printing, mailing supplies
☑️ Assistance with resumes and cover letters

Work is more than a way to make a living. It's a way to make a life.
This Labour Day, we call for inclusive workplaces that shift society’s perspective regarding people whose value has not yet been recognized.
You might recognize this friendly face from our Wellness Gym: Christopher Kelly has been the heart of wellness and fitness here for 16 years. Over those years, he has introduced countless Causeway clients to the benefits of regular exercise and the sort of goal-setting and routine-building that stands them in good stead as they participate in our employment programs. Finding and keeping a job takes the same stamina as a good workout routine.
Christopher has coached the Wellness Warriors' annual participation in the Ottawa Race Weekend, and he led a virtual community kitchen during the gym's closure due to the pandemic. He has been a flexible and untiring addition to the Causeway team!
We look forward to introducing the Wellness Gym's next personal trainer, but first we have to say: we will miss you, Christopher!
Research shows that the LGBTQIA+ community is more likely to face discrimination on the job and encounter barriers in finding and advancing in employment. We join Capital Pride • Fierté dans la Capitale in encouraging everyone to "Listen. Learn. Act." as we work for a brighter, more inclusive, future.
Can you motivate and educate? Do you have a compassionate approach to client care? Do you believe in guiding gym-users to reach their full potential? You might be our next Wellness Program Coordinator. You can find the full job posting (and all our job openings) at this link: https://ow.ly/9xuy50SX159

Before you start any search, you have to know what you're looking for. This morning's workshop "Self-Assessment and Career Development" focused on knowing your strengths, your self, and your situation. Thanks to Lisa and Elisena for a dynamic hour in our Employment Resource Centre!
Happy Canada Day to the Causeway community. Please note that we are closed on Monday, July 1, and re-open on Tuesday at 8:30 a.m. Enjoy your day!
This week, we celebrated our participants, staff and Board of Directors at our Annual General Meeting. We completed the business of our AGM while gathering together the Causeway community for a bit of inspiration, celebration, and delicious appetizers supplied by Krackers Katering.
It’s the “place to be” for Stephanie. Krackers cares a lot about its staff and their continued growth. Whenever you order, staff get to work on preparing your food and their kitchen skills.
Invaluable means that your abilities and contributions are beyond value. The things you offer to society are more than just economic. At Causeway, we make community work.
By finding a role in your community and working to benefit the greater good, you are creating new moments of hope, perspective, and meaning for yourself and others. You can’t put a price on that. That’s invaluable.
Note that some of our wonderful board members are missing from this photo! They are busy people! If you come to our AGM, you will have a chance to meet them yourself as we celebrate our year.
