CPAR builds relationships with communities from a foundation of equality and respect. CPAR understands that community members themselves are the experts and that the success of our work stems from our ability to support the processes whereby community members empower themselves to take control of their own and their family’s futures. A healthy community does not simply mean that this community wil

Hear from CPAR's long-time monthly donor, Norma:
“My own interest in international health concerns was motivated by Biafra – I worked in Acute Care as a Head Nurse. I became a CUSO Volunteer and went to Nigeria as a Nurse Tutor. After 3 years, I returned to Canada and back into the health care system as Director of Nursing.
A project called "PLANT A TREE IN AFRICA" by CPAR caught my attention and I was able to purchase hundreds of trees, making the donations in the name of nursing staff of each clinical area. The beautiful posters received acknowledging their donations were posted on each nursing unit for patients, visitors, staff, and physicians, etc. to see.
They generated considerable interest, and I hoped spurred others to learn about CPAR and to participate in their programs. This is what motivated me to become a monthly donor, and 40 years later at the age of 87 – I am pleased to continue contributing to the incredible work of CPAR.
Thank you for your dedication in these very challenging times of climate change and humanitarian crises.”

Today is the International Day for the Eradication of Poverty, a reminder of the ongoing fight against poverty around the world. Let’s take a moment to understand the challenges faced by communities in Malawi, Ethiopia, and beyond:
Poverty Rates: Approximately 9.2% of the global population live in extreme poverty.
Education Access: Many kids in Malawi drop out of school to help their families, continuing the cycle of poverty. Education is key to breaking that cycle!
Nutrition Matters: About 1 in 5 children globally suffer from malnutrition. Access to healthy food is critical for their future.
Health Risks: Lack of clean water and sanitation leads to high rates of preventable diseases.
Programs like CPAR’s Green Schools Network are vital in addressing these challenges. By improving access to clean water, sanitation, and nutrition in schools, we empower children to learn and thrive. The program is dedicated to improving educational outcomes by addressing critical challenges like contaminated water and food insecurity.
By enhancing access to clean water, sanitation, and nutritious food, we’re providing students with a healthier environment where they can thrive academically. Our initiatives, including rainwater harvesting and school gardens, directly support students’ well-being and learning.
Reflect and share your story: How has education impacted your life or the life of a young person you know? Post your experiences in the comments and inspire others to recognize the power of knowledge in overcoming poverty. Together, we can advocate for a brighter future for all!
On World Food Day, we celebrate the importance of sustainable nutrition for everyone. CPAR's Green Schools Network (GSN) program in Malawi empowers primary students to learn about sustainable agriculture by establishing school gardens. These gardens not only provide fresh fruits and vegetables but also teach students the value of nutrition and food security.
Through our program, students receive tools and seeds to cultivate their own gardens, helping to combat nutritional deficiencies while fostering a connection to the land. When children understand where their food comes from, they are more likely to make healthy choices.
Your turn: Share your favorite local dish or a sustainable recipe in the comments! How about a challenge? Try cooking a meal using only ingredients from a local garden and post your photos.
Happy Global Handwashing Day! Did you know that proper handwashing can reduce the spread of respiratory infections by up to 20%? Let’s talk about why handwashing is a game-changer for health:
Stops Germs: Soap + water = goodbye germs! Keep yourself and others safe.
Protects Everyone: Clean hands are especially important for kids and vulnerable people.
Boosts Learning: Healthy students = better grades! Less sick days means more time in class.
Builds Lifelong Habits: Teaching kids to wash their hands sets them up for a healthier future.
CPAR's Green Schools Network (GSN) program in Malawi is making hand hygiene a priority by constructing handwashing stations in primary schools.
These stations provide students with the tools they need to practice good hygiene, crucial in a region where access to clean water can be limited. By integrating lessons on safe sanitation and hygiene behaviors, we’re not just improving health but also creating a culture of cleanliness among young learners.
Let's keep our hands clean and promote health for all: www.cpar.ca/academic-allies
Obstetric fistula affects approximately half a million women worldwide, with many cases occurring in Tanzania, where over 3,000 new cases are reported annually. This severe condition, resulting from prolonged or obstructed labor, can lead to chronic health issues and significant social stigma.
At CPAR, we’re committed to changing this reality through our “Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies” program. Our initiative focuses on improving maternal and infant health by addressing key challenges including obstetric fistula.
By supporting our program, you contribute to a brighter future for women and babies in Tanzania. Your support helps provide critical care, restore dignity, and ensure healthier outcomes for mothers and their newborns.

Critical Issue: Malnutrition in Malawi
Malawi is experiencing one of the highest rates of malnutrition in Southern Africa, with 36% of children affected by stunting (MICS 2019-20). This dire situation is driven by a poor diet, poverty, food insecurity, and exacerbated by climate change and rising food prices.
At CPAR, we’re doing our small part by addressing these challenges through our Green Schools Network program. Here’s how we’re making a difference:
- Nutrition Support: Our school gardens provide essential fruits and vegetables, directly improving the diet and health of children and their families.
- Sustainable Solutions: We implement sustainable agricultural practices to enhance food security and reduce the impact of climate change on local farming.
- Educational Impact: We educate students on nutrition and sustainable farming, equipping them with skills to overcome food challenges and build a healthier future.

Our upcoming project, referred to internally as "Healthy Mothers, Healthy Babies," is set to make a significant difference in rural Tanzania, particularly for 227,000 women and adolescent girls aged 15-49.
How? By introducing remote ultrasound units directly into their communities. This innovative approach aims to overcome the barrier of high travel costs that often prevent women from accessing essential diagnostic imaging.
It will also indirectly benefit 210,000 men and boys by increasing access to health information and breaking down gender-rigid norms. This holistic approach not only improves healthcare access but also promotes greater gender equality in health outcomes.
By empowering women with the tools they need to monitor their health closer to home, we're not only investing in their well-being but also nurturing stronger, more resilient communities. Stay tuned for updates on this transformative effort!
