CAF-FCA surveyed 1,062 tradespeople and asked them about the importance of certification. Earning a Certificate of Qualification with a Red Seal endorsement was seen as an important personal achievement and represented industry-wide professional recognition. When survey respondents were asked what the benefits of the Red Seal endorsement were more than half (51%) indicated personal satisfaction, followed by career advancement (47%) and recognition of the Red Seal across Canada as an industry standard of excellence (45%). An additional two-fifths (42%) believed that more employers will want to hire them.

Research Reports CAF-FCA research addresses the needs, interests and priorities of the apprenticeship community, providing insights that inform the programs, policies and practices of Canadian apprenticeship stakeholders.
Men have significantly higher completion rates than women in the heavy-duty equipment technician, carpenter, plumber, steamfitter/pipefitter and construction electrician trades. Women have higher completion rates than men in the hairdresser, industrial electrician, cook and painter and decorator trades.

The Canadian Apprenticeship Forum is currently accepting applications for both of our professional development programs, and we’re looking for women and gender diverse individuals in the trades to join us. Along with learning new skills and practical tips from subject matter experts, participants will receive coaching and mentorship from experienced tradespeople. Additionally, participants will learn alongside a community of their peers and will have many opportunities to develop lasting relationships with other women and gender-diverse individuals in the trades.
These programs invite participants from all over Canada to come together online for approximately four months and about six hours a week. Individuals are welcome to take both of these complimentary courses, although they cannot be taken simultaneously.

Program completions remain lower for women apprentices compared to men apprentices. In 2022, nearly half (46%) of the men registered in a Red Seal trade completed their program, compared to just over one-third (36%) of the women.

On behalf of CAF-FCA, the Project Advisory Committee and Sisco & Associates Consulting Services Inc. developed 4 milestones for success in pre-apprenticeship and apprenticeship training:
1. Awareness is the first milestone and focuses on inspiring Indigenous Peoples to pursue
a career in the trades.
2. Engagement is the second milestone and focuses on creating ways to increase
Indigenous cultural inclusion and community participation.
3. Supports and resources is the third milestone and focuses on the provisions to meet
participant needs and encourage individual success.
4. Retention is the fourth milestone and focuses on providing opportunities to grow within
a chosen trades career that aligns with individual goals to increase Indigenous Peoples retention within the trades.

Compared to 2017, a higher number of women completed their programs in the industrial electrician, construction electrician, refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic and sheet metal worker trades in 2022. The industrial electrician trade experienced the largest increase with a completion rate for women that doubled from 33% in 2017 to 68% in 2022.

CAF-FCA analyzed Statistics Canada data from the Registered Apprenticeship Information System (RAIS). The latest year available is 2022. These are the key findings:
• In 2022, new registrations in Canada’s largest Red Seal trades reached 54,100, an increase of 15% (+6,900) from 2021.
• There was a record number of new registrations in carpenter, painter and decorator, industrial mechanic (millwright), and refrigeration and air conditioning mechanic trade programs in 2022.
• As of 2022, cook, hairstylist, industrial electrician and truck and transport mechanic were the only trades where new registrations had not recovered to their pre-pandemic levels.

Indigenous program administrators identified wise program practices when offering training programs:
• Collaborate at every stage
• Provide holistic, trauma–informed practices
• Incorporate culture within the training and program
• Provide more training opportunities directly within communities
• Focus on building trust with participants and employers
• Have an Indigenous liaison, mentor or job coach available
• Offer individualized supports and resources when needed, including acknowledging and addressing client needs beyond the program
• Check in and follow up with individuals regularly

To gather insights about studying and exams, CAF-FCA surveyed 1,062 tradespeople. The survey results indicate:
• When studying, 45% of survey respondents sought help from an instructor or tutor and 29% attended study groups with their peers.
• Apprentices prepared for exams by studying between a few weeks to a week ahead of an exam (64%).
• When getting ready for exams, apprentices sought strategies to tackle multiple choice questions, virtual Red Seal preparation workshops and trades-specific videos to explain concepts.

CAF-FCA surveyed 463 tradespeople gathering insights about barriers to completion. Half of apprentice survey respondents reported barriers to progressing in their apprenticeship. Across all levels, delays in accessing technical training and concerns about reduced income during technical training were barriers. Level 4 apprentices, who are about to finish their training, are concerned about writing the Certificate of Qualification examination. They report test anxiety and reluctance to the write the exam as barriers. Family issues are also a concern for these apprentices.

Indigenous tradespeople reported feeling more confident after participating in pre-apprenticeship training programs and achieving their personal goals. They shared their thoughts about measuring success as a part of CAF-FCA’s latest research project:
Personal Goals
• Ensure individuals set and define their personal goals (i.e., program completion,
upgrade training certification, secured employment).
Measuring Success
• Recognize improvement in soft skills, such as attendance, communication and commitment to program.
• Enhance skills and confidence using tools in the workplace.
Recruitment & Retention
• Highlight individual success through recognition and celebrating program completion and skills development.
• Provide consistent follow ups with individuals to encourage ongoing training and to pursue employment opportunities.

CAF-FCA surveyed 463 tradespeople gathering insights about factors that motivate progression in apprenticeship. These are the key findings:
• Personal factors: The main personal factors that motivated respondents to complete their apprenticeship included a sense of accomplishment and the potential for increased wages upon obtaining certification.
• Employer and government support: Most respondents indicated that high quality training, such as encouragement from journeypersons and mentors, helped them progress. Other key factors included employer permission to go to technical training and federal government grants.
• Exam Prep Help: Most respondents were interested in accessing free online exam preparation workshops (61%) or free tools to help them study (39%).

Indigenous tradespeople, who were consulted as a part of CAF-FCA’s latest research project, identified these financial and learning supports as helpful when participating in training programs:
• assistance with program costs (i.e., subsidies to purchase work clothes, books, and hand tools),
• living and food allowances, and
• extra tutoring and one-on-one support.
Participants wished they had access to additional supports including childcare,
mentorship (specifically for women), transportation and programs in Indigenous communities.

On behalf of CAF-FCA, Sisco & Associates Consulting Services Inc. talked to 77 participants including Elders and Knowledge Holders about wise practices that support Indigenous Peoples in apprenticeship training. Knowledge Holders recommended that training programs are:
• adapted to reflect both individual and community needs,
• accessible within Indigenous communities,
• incorporate healing and generational aspects of Indigenous cultures,
• offered in land-based settings, and
• transferable to future generations.
