The Ottawa Guild of Potters– a community of clay enthusiasts in Ottawa Canada
The Celebrating Clay virtual exhibition is now open!
Amy Jane St. Denis’ show entitled ‘Vessels of Contemplation MMXXIV’ represents a philosophical and humanistic approach to the creation of clay vessels, perhaps more than any other exhibition in the Celebrating Clay series.
Her uniquely decorated functional pieces are each marked with a roman numeral, connecting it to a set of related but unique pieces. Learn more about the meaning of these pieces by visiting the virtual exhibition.

Today we share a pottery haiku, inspired by Hengameh Kamal Rad's hand built and sculptural pottery...
Crisp leaves dance in fall
Inspiration in each hue
Hands shape clay’s warm form

Whichever, see more of her work
Why do we love pottery? Well here's one excellent reason:
“Clay acts as an antidote to the overwhelm of the digital world. It interrupts your compulsive email-checking. Your mind has a single focus, so the practice can feel meditative or therapeutic. There is no way to speed up clay-drying or firing... ceramics take as much time to make today as they did 2000 years ago”.

Amy Bell knows that, and likely most of you do too. So keep being creative friends!
We asked what you were doing this summer. Elizabeth told us she left it to chance. No careful design planning here. Slips and oxides wedged into clay, then finished at the wheel. Amazing results Elizabeth, thanks for sharing!

"... every piece of clay is a piece of someone's life. They say it even has it own small voice and sings in its own way" – Byrd Baylor, When Clay Sings
Do you feel this?
A piece of us is incorporated in every piece we make. A fragment of our heart, set free in the world. Some pieces sing quietly, some sing with gusto. And there's no better feeling than when another's heart hears that voice.

It's part of your being. It's how you live your life.

SAVE THE GREAT CANADIAN POTTERY THROW DOWN ON CBC
The Great Canadian Pottery Thrown Down was recently cancelled by CBC after only one season. It’s crushing that this positive, entertaining, unique, family oriented series got axed so soon. The show brought families, friends, potters and non-potters together.
If you loved this amazing series, let’s all urge CBC to reconsider their decision to cancel "The Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down". After all, the CBC is meant to represent you and me and all Canadians. Let's do this potters!
TELL CBC YOU WANT "ANOTHER SEASON" BY:
1. Signing the Petition at Change.org ; search "Great Canadian Pottery Throw Down"
2. Sharing the petition with family, friends, and colleagues, and on your social media platforms
3. Using the hashtag

Supporting Local Craft
The Ottawa Guild of Potters is an organization of professional and amateur potters who come together to support one another, to educate, to share and to advocate for the craft and art of pottery.
The Guild holds two sales annually which showcase the constantly engaging work from members. Many events such as wheel demonstrations and free kid’s pottery lessons are featured at the sales and open the unique world of clay to the public.
Once a year the Guild holds a large fund-raising event called Great Bowls of Fire that raises thousands of dollars for the Ottawa Food Bank and brings people together for a special evening of soup, breads, handmade bowls, and fellowship.
Interestingly, the Guild was one of 14 cultural organizations that were awarded grants to create and present a cultural experience for Canada’s 150th celebrations in 2017. Populace, an outdoor, ceramic installation of 9000 roses, feathers and fleurs de lys were created and placed at the Canadian Museum of Nature. This year, a new iteration called Compass will be installed on the grounds of the new Canadian Geographical Enterprises headquarters at 50 Sussex Drive.
