Transforming Lives Amidst Conflict
In the war-torn areas of Ethiopia, your support is creating miracles. Dr. Ambaye's team, battling daily challenges like water shortages at the University of Gondar Hospital, ensures that women with fistula receive not just surgeries but a chance at a new life. Every contribution of $740 covers a life-changing surgery, along with post-operative care, counseling, and a symbol of a fresh start - a new dress or shawl. This isn't just medical assistance; it's restoring hope and dignity. Your generosity is the catalyst for this incredible journey of healing. Together, we can continue to make a difference in the lives of these brave women.
Today, on the International Day of Female Ge***al Mutilation, we stand in solidarity with millions worldwide striving to end this harmful practice. At Ethiopiaid Canada, we are deeply committed to eradicating FGM, and today, we want to spotlight the incredible work of our partner, the Afar Pastoralist Development Association (APDA).
For over 30 years, APDA has been at the forefront of this fight in the Afar region. Two decades ago, the situation in Afar was dire, with FGM practices being near-universal and extremely severe. Thanks to persistent efforts, we now see regions where all forms of cutting have ceased, and where it persists, less severe forms are practiced.
The shift in mindset is monumental. The Afar community, once unquestioning of this practice, now actively debates and challenges it. The awareness of maternal health risks and the availability of services, like those provided by the Barbara May Maternity Hospital in Mille, have played a crucial role. Traditional Birth Attendants, once proponents of FGM, have been re-educated about its dangers.
A landmark achievement has been the engagement of clan and religious leaders. This January, a historic conference saw over 100 leaders from 25 districts in Afar come together. The discussion is now moving towards codifying the prohibition of FGM in traditional law, a significant step towards total eradication.
Join us in supporting APDA's ongoing efforts and learn more about this critical issue.
Visit our page: https://lp.constantcontactpages.com/cu/WqSyZuX/FGM. Together, we can end FGM.
