$2,000 Donation to the Elizabeth Fry Society (EFry) of Peterborough - Our Local Service committee presented Laura Secord, Samantha Wakeling, Janice McCue, and Jill Snoddon from Elizabeth Fry Society of Peterborough with a $2,000 cheque towards creating a cultural and food program for the Wolfe Street modular bridge housing community.
The Wolfe Street community accommodates 50 people in 50 cabins currently experiencing unsheltered homelessness and provides private, safer and inclusive accommodation. At the Modular site 38% of the residents are Indigenous and the food insecurity that is experienced also includes a lack of access to traditional foods.
Our donation will purchase traditional Indigenous food that will be prepared by volunteers who live at the Modular site, and then shared with all the residents to create community. Indigenous residents will be able to share their culture and traditions as a way to create community, build bonds, and heal. This project will focus on unity and a coming together of cultures to move forward together and will be offered in partnership with Nogojiwanong Friendship Centre.
The overall goal on the site is to stabilize people and build connection and belonging that will empower people to explore longer term housing options.

Today, Marit Stiles and her team visited two Housing and Homelessness initiatives by the City of Peterborough. We were so proud to welcome everyone to the Bridge Modular Housing Program for which Elizabeth Fry Society of Peterborough is the site and service operators.
We also welcomed counselor Alex Bierk and City Staff who were able to showcase the significant transformation of the new facility. The facility now features a newly completed hub space with expansive communal areas for activities, a dorm-style kitchen, a large laundry room, medical offices, accessible washrooms, an Indigenous-led ceremony space, and much more. Efry staff and outside agencies collaborate closely here on stabilization, and individual care plans.
We are thrilled to be honoured as one of United Way Peterborough & District's Outstanding Partner Agencies at their 2023 Campaign Awards.
Our Drop-in Program Coordinator, Kristal Jones-Craighead, was a special speaker at the event as she shared the success of our Drop-in Program, funded by the United Way's 2023-2024 Innovation Grant โค๏ธ

See these two lovely humans? This is Sam and Karla and they come clean our bathrooms on-site twice daily. They are our unsung heroes, and are wonderful with our residents. NO STIGMA! That is a challenge with running the site, finding people who are not from human helper agencies who will treat our folks with compassion, judgement free! We appreciate the amazing work these folks do for us. ๐
