Move Your Mood together with SPARC Red Deer has been out and about this week with local youth spray painting interactive games in 10 different local parks and Recreation Centres. Make sure to check them out and get active with your family and friends this summer. It is amazing to see youth giving back and getting creative spray painting in positive ways.

Red Deer we did it!! We have been named Alberta’s Most Active Community for the third year in a row. We won the Most Active Community in Canada in 2022, Alberta’s Most Active Community in 2023 & 2024. Thank you to all of the organizations that helped us reach this goal and to all of the individuals that signed up to get active this June.

Last year, The City of Red Deer won the 2023 Participaction Community Challenge in Alberta. We won $7500 and with that funding the Move Your Mood Alberta and Rec-Create RD: City of Red Deer Arts & Recreation created 12 Play Packs that were distributed to local non-profit community organizations that were involved in the challenge. These play packs are full of fun sport and exercise equipment for the organizations to use in their programming to encourage people to be active in Red Deer.

We hope to take home that winning prize again this year, to create more fun ways for citizens to stay active. You can help Red Deer by signing up for the challenge. We are in first place in Alberta, but the town of Vulcan is right on our heels, so we need to stay active! This FREE event is happening tomorrow June 8th and we hope to see you there! You can still register to walk or run in the 1km, 3km or 5km events. Or just come to participate in the passport to wellness inside the Gary Harris Centre between 11:30-4pm. The Move Your Mood Alberta MYM program was proud to be apart of The Climb Girls Resiliency Conference today. In our session the girls got to connect with one another through activities in each of the MYM Pillars. They got to move and play, enjoy a nutritious smoothie, practice mindfulness and be creative by painting a kindness rock. SPARC Red Deer has created a new kindness rock garden at the Oxbow Dog Park, some of the girls wanted to add their rock to the garden. Make sure to go check it out and read their inspirational messages. You can also add your own kindness rock to the Oxbow or Capstone rock gardens! It’s official we had the grand opening of the Sheldon Kennedy Centre of Excellence yesterday, with over 600 community members attending. I could not be more proud of every single person that made this happen, putting in endless hours of hard work over the last seven years. I am so grateful that Move Your Mood gets to be apart of all the amazing programs and services within the Centre that are working together to help thousands of children and youth grow, heal and thrive! The Red Deer community is truly amazing helping to raise over $12 million dollars for this building. Big shout out to Mark Jones and the CACAC for everything you have done to make this happen. Thank you!!

At the end of the event as we all walked over to the Central Alberta Child Advocacy Centre to cut the ribbon, there was a rainbow arching right over the building. This is the ultimate sign of HOPE!

I am looking forward to the official grand opening of the Sheldon Kennedy Centre of Excellence tomorrow. Make sure to stop by and see me on the second floor in the Move Your Mood Studio. You will for sure have a fun time when you visit the space.

The public is invited tomorrow for an open house of the Sheldon Kennedy Centre of Excellence and the formal program following that!

From noon to 5:00 PM come tour the SKCOE where you can explore all three floors and learn about what this community is doing to support children, youths, and families here in Central Alberta.

Beginning at 7PM, join us at our formal program over at the Gary W. Harris Canada Games Centre on the main campus of Red Deer Polytechnic.

Follow us back over to SKCOE after the program to be a part of our Ceremonial Ribbon Cutting!

These are family friendly events, so bring the kids and come see us on this momentous day!
