6. Shoulder Arthritis: Arthritis of the shoulder joint can develop due to wear and tear over time (osteoarthritis), inflammatory conditions (such as rheumatoid arthritis), or post-traumatic arthritis following a previous injury. Shoulder arthritis causes pain, stiffness, and reduced range of motion, particularly with activities that involve lifting or reaching.

7. Thoracic Outlet Syndrome: Thoracic outlet syndrome occurs when the nerves or blood vessels in the thoracic outlet, the space between the collarbone (clavicle) and first rib, become compressed. This compression can result from anatomical variations, poor posture, or repetitive overhead activities. Symptoms may include shoulder pain, numbness or tingling in the arm or hand, and weakness in the affected limb.

8. Shoulder Instability: Shoulder instability refers to a condition in which the structures that support the shoulder joint, including ligaments and tendons, are unable to maintain the integrity of the joint. This can lead to repeated episodes of partial or complete dislocation of the shoulder. Symptoms include pain, a sensation of looseness or "giving way" in the shoulder, and a feeling of the shoulder slipping out of place.

9. Shoulder Dislocation: A shoulder dislocation occurs when the humeral head (upper arm bone) slips out of its socket in the shoulder blade (glenoid). This can happen due to a traumatic injury, such as a fall or sports-related collision. Shoulder dislocations cause severe pain, swelling, and instability in the shoulder joint, and may require medical intervention to relocate the joint and stabilize the shoulder.

10. Frozen Shoulder (Adhesive Capsulitis): Frozen shoulder is a condition characterized by stiffness, pain, and decreased range of motion in the shoulder joint. It typically develops gradually and can be caused by inflammation, injury, or underlying medical conditions such as diabetes or thyroid disorders. Adhesive capsulitis occurs when the capsule surrounding the shoulder joint becomes thickened and tight, restricting movement.

Shoulder pain and stiffness is one of the number one complaints I see every week! Whether it's due to poor posture, bad sleeping habits or trauma injury to the body. Do you ever wonder what may be causing your shoulders so much grief? Here is a list of 5 popular shoulder dysfunctions that may be causing you pain:

1. Rotator Cuff Tear: The rotator cuff is a group of muscles and tendons that surround the shoulder joint, providing stability and facilitating movement. A tear in one or more of the rotator cuff tendons can result from acute trauma, repetitive overhead activities, or degenerative changes. Rotator cuff tears can cause pain, weakness, and limited range of motion in the shoulder.

2. Shoulder Impingement: Shoulder impingement occurs when the tendons of the rotator cuff become compressed or pinched between the bones of the shoulder, particularly the acromion (a bony projection of the shoulder blade) and the humeral head (the upper arm bone). This compression can result in inflammation, pain, and reduced mobility, especially with overhead activities.

3. Labral Tear: The labrum is a ring of cartilage that surrounds the rim of the shoulder socket (glenoid) and helps stabilize the joint. A labral tear can occur from acute trauma, such as a fall or shoulder dislocation, or from repetitive overhead motions. Symptoms include shoulder pain, clicking or catching sensations, and a feeling of instability in the shoulder joint.

4. Tendonitis: Tendonitis is inflammation of a tendon, which connects muscle to bone, often caused by overuse, repetitive motions, or sudden injury. In the shoulder, common forms of tendonitis include biceps tendonitis and supraspinatus tendonitis. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and tenderness in the affected area, especially with movement or pressure.

5. Bursitis: Bursitis is inflammation of the bursa, fluid-filled sacs that cushion and reduce friction between bones, tendons, and muscles in the shoulder joint. Shoulder bursitis can result from repetitive overhead movements, trauma, or underlying conditions such as arthritis. Symptoms include pain, swelling, and tenderness in the affected area, particularly with movement or pressure.

Massage therapists 'listen' with their hands by discerning textures, tensions, and patterns in muscle tissue, detecting areas of scar tissue, hypertonicity, and other subtle cues, guiding their therapeutic approach for optimal healing and relaxation.

Iliotibial Band Syndrome (ITBS) is a common injury among cyclist, runners and athletes that occurs when the iliotibial band, a thick band of tissue that runs along the outside of the thigh from the hip to the knee, becomes tight or inflamed. This can result in pain and discomfort, typically on the outside of the knee or hip, especially during activities like cycling, running or walking downhill.

Massage can be an effective treatment for ITBS by addressing the tightness and inflammation in the iliotibial band. Here are some ways in which massage can help treat ITBS:

1. Reducing Muscle Tension: Massage techniques such as deep tissue massage or myofascial release can help relax and loosen the muscles surrounding the iliotibial band, reducing tension and pressure on the band itself.

2. Improving Blood Flow: Massage promotes increased blood circulation to the affected area, which can help reduce inflammation and promote healing of the irritated tissues in the iliotibial band.

3. Breaking Up Scar Tissue: In chronic cases of ITBS, scar tissue may form along the iliotibial band, contributing to stiffness and pain. Massage techniques such as cross-fiber friction can help break up this scar tissue, improving flexibility and mobility in the affected area.

4. Addressing Trigger Points: Trigger points, or localized areas of muscle tension and pain, may develop in the muscles surrounding the iliotibial band. Massage can help identify and release these trigger points, relieving pain and restoring normal muscle function.

5. Improving Range of Motion: By addressing tightness and restrictions in the iliotibial band and surrounding muscles, massage can help improve range of motion in the hip and knee joints, allowing for smoother and more comfortable movement during physical activities.

Qualifications and Training: Ever wondered what certifications or schooling I have as a RMT?

Wow! I'm so glad you asked! 😜
In the fall of 2021, I returned to school right here in Red Deer and attended the Alberta College of Massage Therapy's two-year massage program. I graduated in February of 2023 with my 2200-hour massage diploma. Since then, I've been practicing massage as a Registered Massage Therapist under the Canadian Massage and Manual Osteopathic Association (CMMOTA).
I've continued to take courses in assessment, cupping, and IASTM (muscle scraping), with a continued interest in exploring acupressure, active release, muscle energy techniques (MET), sports massage, and more. Stay tuned because I'm always growing, learning, and perfecting my craft. Every time I learn more, I get so excited to bring it to my clients and see the benefits it brings them.

When it comes to massage therapy, there are two distinct titles
➡️1. Non-registered Massage Therapist ⬅️
➡️2. Registered Massage Therapist (RMT) ⬅️
Both of these titles represent different levels of expertise and knowledge when it comes to providing therapeutic treatments for their clients. Let's take a look at each type of practitioner so that you can make an informed decision as to which is suitable for you.

➡️Non-registered Massage Therapist:
The key difference between a non-registered massage therapist and a registered one is that they do not need to complete the RMT educational program. A non-registered massage therapist will typically hold a massage certification that requires 300 – 1000 hours of experience. Many non-registered massage therapists continue their education by specializing in certain modalities. However, they are not considered registered unless they complete an RMT program in their practicing province. A non-registered massage therapist may also be referred to as a masseuse, masseur, or spa practitioner.

Many non-registered massage therapists often specialize in modalities focused on relaxation treatments, and are typically better suited to clients who prefer more soothing and calming massage sessions.

➡️Registered Massage Therapists (RMT):
A RMT is a professional who specializes in the assessment, treatment, and prevention of soft tissue pain and dysfunction. They provide hands-on treatments such as trigger point therapy, joint mobilizations, deep tissue massage, myofascial release techniques, and other manual therapies.

In Canada, becoming a RMT requires a comprehensive education program approved by the provincial regulatory board. Depending on the province and massage therapy association, this program usually requires 2200-3000+ hours of coursework. This includes theoretical and practical components – such as anatomy, physiology, kinesiology, pathology, clinical assessment, and massage techniques – plus a mandatory internship under the supervision of an experienced practitioner.

RMTs are trained to assess and treat a person’s condition.

2️⃣0️⃣2️⃣4️⃣❗❗❗

Hey, everyone, my name is Loudia and I started my RMT business back April of last year and I am so excited that I did. Starting off on my own was terrifying, exciting and super rewarding. I finished school and became a RMT, little did I know I’d start a business and become a book keeper, a social media manager, a saleswoman, a public speaker and overall; a much more confident and self assured person.

Taking risks, and betting on yourself can be a pretty terrifying experience but also an incredible opportunity. Last year I added IASTM, myofascial cupping and a deeper knowledge of general massage therapy. This year I’ll be focusing my business on meeting and collaborating with other businesses that will benefit my clients, and by further pursuing other techniques and skills that will help every client that lies on my table. Thank you to everyone who has shared my business, booked in for a massage and has generally supported and rooted for me and my business. I look forward to growing as a person, a business owner and a massage therapist. And I look forward to seeing more of you, on my table this year. I hope more people get to experience the opportunity to step into their fears and achieve their goals this year.

Cheers to 2024!! Cheers to you

-LOUDIA, RMT

See you on the table 😉

❓❓DID YOU KNOW?❓❓

11million Canadians suffer from back injury and disorders that affects their movement, 1/3 Canadians are living with chronic back problems and pain that are limiting their ability in everyday work and life.

ARE YOU ONE OF THEM?...if so, start making steps today.

HERES HOW...

Start Moving: Being physically active helps prevent and manage injuries or disorders related to sprains, strains, low back pain and neck pain. It can also help maintain strength and mobility. Physical activity is also crucial to maintaining overall health, mobility and quality of life and will help ensure Canadians can continue to do the many activities they love.
Get Into a Daily Routine: Doing daily exercise and movement to keep your spine functioning properly may help to prevent joints from getting creaky and painful. Resistance training is key to keeping muscles and bones at optimal performance.
Consult Someone: Doctors, Massage Therapists, Physiotherapist and Chiropractors are all just some of the many ways you can get help from your chronic pain. Despite a common misconception, those suffering don't need a referral to visit one. To learn more about how massage therapy can help visit ➡️www.flexandflowmassage.ca⬅️

1. Whether you exercise recreationally or competitively, intense gym sessions take a toll on your muscles, joints and nervous system. Increasing blood flow to your worked muscles is one of the best ways to speed up muscle recovery after a workout.

Dry cupping therapy can shorten your recovery time and optimize your training plan by delivering essential nutrients and oxygen to hard-worked muscles.

2. Dry cupping therapy has risen from the ranks and claimed its stake as one of the top recovery tactics for athletes — and this is for good reason. Dry cupping therapy is essentially a form of soft tissue manipulation comparable to massage therapy, percussive therapy, and the Graston technique.

All of these modalities have the same goal: Break up adhesions in the muscle tissue, encourage blood flow to specific tissues, and expedite muscle healing (exactly what athletes need to perform their best day after day).

3. We see all you hard workers out there. If you work in construction, landscape management, oil production, automotive repair, or another manual labor industry, we’d be surprised to hear you say that you don’t have any aches or pains.

Even those who work jobs that aren’t necessarily manual labor, but involve a lot of activity (such as nursing and serving tables) can benefit from dry cupping therapy. If you make good use of your hands, feet, arms, and legs for work, ask our team how dry cupping therapy can keep you at 100%.

4. Chronic pain of any severity level is a good reason to see a doctor. Low-grade chronic pain in particular — such as pesky muscle aches — can benefit tremendously from dry cupping therapy.

Aside from muscle recovery from workouts or competitions, chronic pain is likely one of the most common reasons people seek dry cupping therapy, due to the soothing massage-like effects of the therapy.

It was fun, it was exciting and it completely changed the way I saw sport and opportunity. This trip, this team and this experience fueled so much of my later passion for the sport and for striving for excellence. I may not be competing anymore but I'm always striving for excellence.
