At 4:30am on August 3, 2013, 17-year-old Quinn left his home for the last time. His mom, Bonny, heard the door close softly as her son left for work that morning. Two hours later, a police officer knocked on that same door. His face was grave as he broke the news:

Quinn – so full of life and joy – was gone, killed instantly by an impaired driver.

It was two days before Bonny and her husband, Craig, could say goodbye to their son. “That’s when Quinn’s death became real,” says Bonny. “Before that it felt like a horrific nightmare.”

To this day, Bonny carries her loss with her. She misses Quinn’s laugh, his sparkly eyes. She thinks about all the things her son will never get to do: Get married. Have a family of his own. Be a good father just like his dad.

But Bonny is doing something remarkable with her profound grief and anger. She’s putting those feelings into making a positive difference for other families. Together with three other couples who also lost a loved one to impaired driving, Bonny and Craig started a Chapter of MADD Canada in their community of Saskatoon in 2018.

“We can’t just curl into a ball and give up. We have Quinn’s younger brother to think about,” Bonny explains. “So we focus on what’s important to Quinn: Being there for others and raising awareness about this preventable crime.”

I understand what Bonny means. I felt the same way when my own mom was killed by an impaired driver. And, today, I want you to know how very grateful we both are. With your loyal support for MADD Canada, you make an impact too.

“There’s no recipe for getting through the grieving process,” Bonny admits. “But thanks to your support, we’re here to listen. We help victims and survivors navigate the court system. And, we let them know we’re doing everything we can to prevent this devastating tragedy from happening to other families.”

Reaching out to victims/survivors is important but it’s not all you accomplish with your generosity. You also help MADD Canada educate young people about the perils of driving impaired as well as build awareness about it in the minds of all Canadians.

“We speak at schools and tell Quinn’s story and how his death changed our lives. My husband and I recently did eight presentations in one month,” says Bonny. “It was worth it. If I can stop one person from driving impaired or getting into a vehicle with an impaired driver, mission accomplished.”

Bonny, it is your generosity that makes our work possible.

However you choose to give, your support means Bonny and I and many other volunteers can keep reaching out to grieving families in urgent need of understanding. It means we can continue our tireless work to convince governments to introduce more effective impaired driving legislation. Your donation will also help fund other vital programs such as our School Program, Campaign 911, and Project Red Ribbon.

“The red ribbons I see at this time of year fill me with hope,” says Bonny. “They are a symbol of MADD Canada’s important work – a reminder to make smart choices and get home safe. They also honour every person we’ve lost to this senseless crime.”

I’m grateful to Bonny and the other MADD Canada volunteers who make a positive difference. Your support will make an impact too – on Canada’s roads and in the life of everyone spending this summer with those they love.

Sincerely,
Tanya Hansen Pratt

Back to school is just around the corner, and while school zones have been extended to 7 days a week from 7 am to 7 pm, the increased traffic in front of schools makes it imperative for drivers to be diligent – especially at the beginning and end of the school day.

It is everyone’s responsibility to ensure children get to and from school safely.

• Young children tend to think cars can stop instantly.
• Children believe that if they can see your car, you can see them.
• Children under 10 do not accurately judge vehicle speed or distance.
• Vehicle-pedestrian accidents involving children tend to result in serious injury, even death.
• The penalty for speeding in a school zone is the same as any other speeding offense, resulting in fines and penalized three SGI demerit points.

Let’s work together to keep our future generations safe!

This doesn’t have to keep happening. Impaired driving is completely preventable but remains one of the leading criminal causes of death. Please plan ahead. Don’t leave another family heartbroken this long weekend.

At approximately 4:14pm yesterday, August 20,2024 one of our tow operators was struck by an impaired motorist travellings North on Highway 2 North of Granum AB while on a call.

We are very thankful to share that our operator is at home recovering.

Please don't drink and drive, this could have been anyone that day. A family on the side of the road, grandma or grandpa getting out to see why their vehicle was making noise, none the less it's a scary situation that could have left a family member not making it home due to a careless act.

We appreciate the witnesses who stopped, all the first responders and Volker who assisted with the call yesterday.

Please bare with us over the next little bit if our ETAs are longer then usual.

🎉 Happy Canada Day! 🎉
Whether you are enjoying fireworks, barbecues, or simply spending time with loved ones, let's make this weekend memorable and special.
It's crucial that these memories are not marred by an impaired driving crash. If you plan to consume alcohol, cannabis, and/or other drugs, please ensure you have a safe and sober way to get home. MADD Canada urges all Canadians to plan ahead, never drive or get into a vehicle with someone who's impaired, and call 911 if you suspect an impaired driver.
Wishing everyone a fantastic and safe Canada Day! 🍁❤️

SGI is proud to work with communities who are finding ways to champion traffic safety.

Students at Wapawikoscikan School in Pelican Narrows covered paper bags in artwork and messages encouraging safe driving behaviours, as pictured here.

Messages were written in both English and Cree. The bags were then given out to customers at local stores and gas stations.

The long weekend is fast approaching, and the SPS is wishing everyone a safe and happy Canada Day.

We also want to stress the importance of driving safely if you are traveling, and finding a safe ride home if you have been drinking.

Patrol officers and SPS Traffic Units will be out to assist with the weekend’s events and keep impaired drivers off the streets.

Happy Canada Day!

For the month of July, traffic stops made by the RPS Traffic Safety Unit and CTSS will include mandatory alcohol screening.

Impaired driving remains the leading cause of fatal collisions on Saskatchewan roads. To ensure everyone finds a safe ride home, volunteer to be the designated driver, call a friend or loved one for a ride, use a taxi or rideshare service, or spend the night at a friend’s place.

CPPS wishes to thank the Government of Saskatchewan for supporting our application for funding for our VMS Message/Speed sign and trailer through the Provincial Traffic Safety Fund Grant Program. This program provides financial assistance for equipment that will increase Traffic Safety awareness. Corman Park Police Service conducts numerous high visibility check stops throughout the year in the RM of Corman Park. The addition of equipment such as this contributes to a safe work location for both police and the public.
