Scrapper - Official Trailer 04/09/2024

The next AIF film is Scrapper

Wednesday, Apr. 10, 2024
7 pm @ Galaxy Cinemas, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

Director: Charlotte Regan
United Kingdom 2023
English; 84 minutes

Resourceful and smart, 12-year-old Georgie (Lola Campbell) is living alone after her mother unexpectedly dies, but with her best friend Ali (Alin Uzun), she convinces those around her that all is fine at home. That is, until a bleached-blonde, track-suited young man (Harris Dickinson) appears, claiming to be her father. Newcomer Campbell naturally crackles with the oft-improvised dialogue and Regan masterfully navigates this surprising and effervescent take on the father–daughter dynamic with poignancy, humour, and tenderness.

Watching these two mutually suspicious strangers stumble toward forming a family makes Scrapper an invigorating treat, like finding wild flowers bursting out of broken pavement.
Kyle Smith, Wall Street Journal

Campbell is a revelation. This is her first movie role, and her performance is flawless.
Odie Henderson, Boston Globe

Delicately dancing the knife edge between too-cute and over-maudlin, the filmmaker and her terrific actors have given viewers that rarity in cinema: uplift without the dreary moralizing.
Ann Hornaday, Washington Post

Fallen Leaves Trailer #1 (2023) 03/24/2024

Next movie is Mar. 27: Kuolleet lehdet / Fallen Leaves

https://youtu.be/usReZGPdlsA

Wednesday, Mar. 27, 2024
7 pm @ Galaxy Cinemas, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

Director: Aki Kaurismäki
Finland/Germany 2023
Finnish; 81 minutes

In Helsinki, two lonely souls Ansa (Alma Pöysti) and Holappa (Jussi Vatanen) meet by chance in a karaoke bar. She’s a cashier, moving from job to job. He’s a manual laborer, also going from job to job. They’re both shy, but drawn to each other. As the bond between Ansa and Holappa deepens, the couple’s chance for happiness feels all the more precious against news reports on the war in Ukraine. A hilariously deadpan, fervently humanist tragicomedy, Fallen Leaves is a celebration of the solace we may find in each other, if we’re brave enough to try.

A thoroughly entertaining, completely unpredictable love story. Fallen Leaves is one of the best films I’ve seen this year. Leonard Maltin, leonardmaltin.com

Kaurismäki is back. … The same droll humour and keen social awareness that have defined his work since Leningrad Cowboys go America, in 1989, are now put in service of a lovely, star-crossed romance. Tara Brady, Irish Times

This is a crisp autumn breeze of a movie, refreshing and invigorating even when it seems like things are falling apart. Barry Hertz, Globe and Mail

JULES | Official Trailer | Bleecker Street 02/17/2024

Jules
Wednesday, Feb. 28, 2024
7 pm @ Galaxy Cinemas, Sault Ste. Marie, ON
Director: Marc Turtletaub
Denmark/Greenland/Canada 2023
English, Danish, Kalaallisut, and Inuktitut; 87 minutes
Rated: PG-13 for strong language
Milton (Ben Kingsley) lives a quiet life of routine in a small town. Each day blends seamlessly into the next, until a UFO and its extra-terrestrial passenger crash land in his backyard. Before long, Milton develops a close relationship with the alien he calls Jules. Things become complicated when two neighbors (Harriet Sansom Harris and Jane Curtin) discover Jules, and the government closes in. A heartwarming dramedy about finding meaning and connection, Jules is a gem that will leave you with a smile and a renewed appreciation for the beauty found in life’s most ordinary moments.
What sounds like the same old story is actually one of the year’s most pleasant surprises.
Rafer Guzman, Newsday

The picture is elevated by its handling of melancholy themes of ageing and loneliness, and a suberb gruff-yet-vulnerable performance from Kingsley. Wendy Ide, Observer (UK)

Sensitive, intelligent, sweet, and presented with considerable integrity, right down to the direction, which is scrupulous in not showing anything that doesn’t actually need to be seen.

Maestro | Official Trailer | Netflix 02/02/2024

Maestro
Wednesday, Feb. 7, 2024
7 pm @ Galaxy Cinemas, Sault Ste. Marie, ON
Director: Bradley Cooper
USA 2023
English; 129 minutes
Rated: R for some language and drug use
Exploring of the complex love story of composer Leonard Bernstein (Bradley Cooper) and actress Felicia Montealegre (Carey Mulligan), this film includes the hardships that permeated their long marriage due to Leonard’s affairs, but also sympathizes with his struggles of being q***r in a society that limits free expression. Presenting an artistic vision of Bernstein’s life, Maestro is not your typical biographical drama, as it seeks to communicate the feeling of a life rather than focusing on the historical details. A symphony in its own right, this passionate tale is a vibrant portrait of love, heartbreak, family, and music.

A captivating drama that’s big, bold and intimate all at once. Rafer Guzman, Newsday

Maestro comes alive as Cooper, who also co-wrote the screenplay, filters Bernstein’s passion for life and all its grand indulgences into an intensely physical performance, which peaks in a sweat-drenched conducting sequence that bursts off the screen. Adam Graham, Detroit News

A movie about a great artist and, considering how effectively it tells the story in an unconventional way, it is a work of art. Jordan Hoffman, The Messenger

The Persian Version
Wednesday, Jan. 24, 2024
7 pm @ Galaxy Cinemas, Sault Ste. Marie, ON

Director: Maryam Keshavarz
USA 2023
English/Farsi; 107 minutes
Rated: R for language and some sexual references

A first generation American, Leila (Layla Mohammadi) defies the expectations of those around her, particularly her mother, Shireen (Niousha Noor). When Leila’s family gathers for her father’s heart transplant, a secret is revealed that catapults the estranged mother and daughter into an exploration of the past. As we’re transported back in time to Shireen’s childhood in Iran and her initial experiences in America, we gain an understanding of the loss and personal sacrifice that has come to inform her rocky relationship with Leila. A drama wrapped in comedy, The Persian Version is full of both heart and heartache.

A funny, soulful journey across language and time that also offers an illuminating look at the complexities of motherhood and identity. Candice Frederick, Huffington Post

Maryam Keshavarz’s The Persian Version is an ebullient rule-breaker, and it does so in the name of the many women it wants to celebrate. Nick Allen, RogerEbert.com

“Braids comedy and tragedy, vibrant aplomb and thoughtful soberness.” Lisa Kennedy, Variety

You Hurt My Feelings | Official Trailer HD | A24 11/04/2023

Nov. 8: You Hurt My Feelings

Director: Nicole Holofcener; USA 2023; English; 93 min.

Writer-professor Beth (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) and her therapist husband Don (Tobias Menzies) are happy, still passionate and still supporting each other
professionally, even after decades of marriage. Beth is struggling to get her first novel published, and Don has supported and praised this work, draft after draft. But one day, Beth overhears him admit that he doesn’t think her new project is
very good. A story about moderately happy people who are pretty good at holding everything together until they come face to face with the truth, You Hurt My Feelings is darkly comedic and deceptively masterful.

Oct. 25/2023:
Le otto montagne / The Eight Mountains

Directors: Felix Van Groeningen / Charlotte Vandermeersch;
Italy/Belgium 2022; Italian; 147 min.

While visiting the Italian Alps, young Pietro develops a friendship with a local
boy, Bruno. As the two reconnect sporadically over the next few decades, their
bond is tested by the ebb and flow of their very different lives. Co-winner of the
Jury Prize at Cannes in 2022, The Eight Mountains captures through observant
detail and stunning landscape photography a timeless friendship, as vast and
monumental as the mountains that quietly overlook them. Here, the simple joys
found in nature and friendship offer a staggering rumination on beauty itself –
where we find it and how it leaves us.

With no alternative reference, Cea’s childhood feels normal, natural, and maybe even idyllic. That’s until Michelle tires of her father’s criticism and decides to remove herself and Cea from the community. AFIRE (2023) | Trailer | Christian Petzold | Paula Beer | Thomas Schubert | Langston Uibel 09/23/2023

Sept. 27, 2023: Roter Himmel / Afire

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YHzpUE_FCeI

Wednesday, Sept. 27, 2023
7 pm @ Galaxy Cinemas, Sault Ste. Marie, ON
Director: Christian Petzold
Germany 2023
German; 103 minutes
Best friends Leon (Thomas Schubert), an aspiring novelist, and Felix (Langston Uibel), a promising visual artist, retreat to the Baltic coast for the summer to make solid progress on projects they hope will alter the course of their lives. There, however, they encounter Nadja (Paula Beer) and Devid (Enno Trebs), whose passionate and seemingly boundary-less entanglement entraps Leon and Felix, dramatically disrupting not just their routines, but also their sense of purpose. Meanwhile, a looming forest fire draws nearer, threatening to burn all that is beautiful in its path. A gorgeously realized and deeply perceptive exploration of the impulse to create, Afire is a profound powder keg of a film.

Like all of Petzold’s recent pictures, Afire draws you in confidently and prepares its knockout emotional punch with scrupulousness and a vivid sense of surprise. Glenn Kenny, RogerEbert.com

Throughout this movie, an absorbing, barbed and frequently funny evisceration of artistic ego, Petzold practices a deft and disarming sleight of hand, using key details to keep the viewer off balance and deliver a stinging rebuke to Leon’s myopia. Justin Chang, Los Angeles Times

Deceptive simplicity makes way for illuminating depths. David Rooney, The Hollywood Reporter
