Hi, welcome to my art page!
Respect on this day.
A tribute to a great lady who I miss very much. Portrait painting is such a personal endeavour, and capturing the persons features can be challenging, but this painting turned out just how I wanted it.
"Taking Caribou Hill"
Gallipoli, 1915
Oil on Canvas
36x48
Well, it was not meant to be this year! Here is my entry painting for the 2023 Arts and Letters contest called "Taking Caribou Hill". If you are wondering who and gentlemen are and why I choose this scene, please read the attachment. The soldier in the middle is Sgt. Walter Green (Allan Hawco's Great Great Uncle) and the only one of the three to survive the war. In the background is Sulva Bay on the right and Salt Lake on the left. The Newfoundland trenches were just beyond the brush line. Hope you like the back story to this painting and Newfoundland's first time entering conflict.
Haven't posted much lately, been working on a new piece for the Arts and Letters Contest, which I can not display on any media outlets before adjudication. Fingers crossed 🤞
Available 12x18 or 16x20 prints for the giveaway
Who remembers or has taken an excursion on the Scademia? This was a great project and a history lesson to boot. My good friend Capt. Charlie Anonsen and I decided to showcase the Scademia in a story board context. Little did I know about the history of the iconic schooner, but it has a very interesting past. The schooner has made several voyages as far as the Caribbean. As you can see in the painting, the most memorable events in the Scademia history, are visits to New York, Cuba, and the search for Adolf Hitlers lost submarine, believed to have been sunk off the coast of Turks and Caicos. I also discovered that Charlie sailed on the Norma & Gladys in his younger days, which was a great side story that most Grand Bankers would appreciate.

"Woman making bread"

Oil on canvas
Year: 1949
Not quite finished but had to post. Trying to channel my Vermeer in this one. Most Newfoundlanders can relate to this scene as I did when I first saw the photo. It was dated 1949. Nothing like the smell of Mom’s or Nans homemade bread.

“A Sunday Stroll”
Church Street, Grand Bank
1920’s
As you may have noticed, I really like period pieces, and this has been on the radar for sometime. Church Street, Grand Bank, sometime in the twenties. There is just something cool about taking an old black and white photo of my hometown and recreating the scene in colour. This is how I imagine it to have been like on a Sunday afternoon
Very proud of my girlie tonight. Instead of the iPad she wanted to paint, so she decided to paint a beach scene for her mom because we can’t get to our happy place just yet. With some fundamental colour mixing and a short discussion on perspective, she produced a beauty reproduction. Just had to share.

Put the light in the window, my darling, she said,
As she gazed at the dark, stormy night over head.
Based on one of my favorite Newfoundland songs, I call this “Put the Light in the Window”

Found these gems while cleaning, Art class 1989, dear lord, so long ago. Some one ask me recently if I would ever consider teaching classes, which has never crossed my mind. The only advice I can offer at this point is, if you have a child that has a major interest or great potential in the arts, encourage it and give support. I recently spoke with a well known and accomplished Newfoundland painter and he told me "keep up the good work, brush miles will pay off". Wise words for any artist I think.
Cheers
Jason

It has been awhile since my last post due to this COVID 19, but it has given me time to paint this scene. I am not sure of where or who the individuals are, but I think it depicts any outport community on this beautiful island. I will be entering it in the Rooms contest this fall, so fingers crossed.🤞. I would like to give a big thanks to everyone who have left a comment or like/shared my page, it has given me the drive to continue my art, so Thank You!!!
When I painted this scene I had no idea it would really look like this on any given day. Should rename it COVID 19. Stay safe everyone!!
